I was watching some Alien documentary on tv and it got me thinking... Do Aliens really exist? I know in the U.S we have the big Roswell conspiracy and the "Battle of Los Angeles" but do you really believe they exist? I choose to believe they do. In my opinion it's crazy to think we're the only ones in existance in the galaxy. :alian:

I think they probably exist, but have trouble believing they visit earth, I agree that governments do cover things up, but I think aliens are a red herring, that means we stop looking for more realistic answers...

I have no doubt that intelligent life exists on more worlds than just our own. There are too many stars with too many planets for this to be the one and only place where people, not necessarily human, of some sort have evolved. Having said that, I have serious doubts that we will ever meet any of them. The distances separating us are just too vast to make such a thing possible.

It's very unlikely that there are no other lifeforms in the universe. The size of the ever expanding universe is unimaginable. Nobody knows how many stars there are in the universe, and I don't think anybody ever will, but it is estimated that there are about 300 billion stars in our galaxy alone. The number of galaxies in the universe may be as high as 500 billion, maybe higher, nobody knows.
Many of these stars, like our sun, have planets. The number of planets out there is so high, that it's unthinkable to me that earth is the only planet that has life. Some scientists think that it's very likely that there are even intelligent civilisations in our galaxy.

However, I don't believe that any of those aliens will ever visit earth. Like white avenger said, the distance they would have to travel is way too far, and even if they had the technology to travel superluminal, their trip would probably still take hundreds or thousands of years.

The best proof we have of intelligent life elsewhere is that they have not tried to contact us.

Do aliens exist? That's a bit like asking if God exists.
Personally I believe aliens do exist, in what form they exist who knows
Do we measure intelligence by earth standards or theirs.
Of all the reported sightings of UFO's have any been real? All it needs is for one to be real, considering how fast they have been reported as moving long distances wouldn't take long.
We don't understand how many creatures on earth exist in extreme conditions and searches have been made for eons. So given that humans have only been to the moon a few times its a bit early to give a definitive yes or no about intelligent life.

Considering the probability of life spontaneously being created vs the number of possible planets, I have no doubt that there is life somewhere else.

Do I believe in all that alien/UFO crap, not at all. As advanced as their technology may be, there are some physics rule that apply to Earth and space that would make it very hard for anyone to communicate or visit us (unless life was found on our own solar system, which is much less probable at this point).

I think this is a fair comparison.

I personally think aliens probably do exist, but whether we can prove their existence is a totally different story. I think the subject is quite fascinating though and the possibilities can seem quite exciting.

There are some great testimonies out there, but there unfortunately isn't a lot of empirical proof.

galaxy.

Thinking back on the subject, I am reminded of the "Chariots Of The Gods" furor a couple of decades ago, which included the theory that multigenerational ships from other star systems did, in fact, visit Earth, and did, in fact, colonize it, those colonists becoming either the source of our various mythological figures such as the Olympian and Asgardian Gods as well as certain superhuman heroes like Heracles (Hercules) and Beowulf, or the actual ancestors of mankind.

The author had some great arguments to support his theories, few of which I can recall at the moment, and none that I particularly bought into, though it did make for some interesting reading at the time.

Just thought that it was worth mentioning.

That is Erik Von Daniken who wrote the book Chariot Of The Gods. He used 'authors license' to the umpteenth degree. Point he was not part of the team that found the crystal skull, by adding his name to the team that is authors license.
I definitely believe there is other life out there. One day we will figure it out but probably not in my lifetime.

Sure why not? There is so much more to the universe than we understand (much less see) so why not believe there is something else out there?

UFO and alien government conspiracy theories do provide some funny entertainment.

I'm more Scully than Mulder when it comes to aliens. However, I believe that it is very much possible that there is alien life.

I certainly believe they exist, the Universe to us (humans) is still very, very much uncharted territory, and it will remain that way for some time, I think we all hope that one day we will advance to the point of star travel like Star Trek as an example, but even anything remote to that is hundreds, possible thousands of years away, if it ever gets that far.

I've always had more than one opinion on the distances involved in terms of Earth being visited, yes, distance is distance, but we are assuming that our perception and rules of physics apply to any other races out there. We only have what we know in terms of technology and physic law to judge how long it could take for a species to come to earth.

Who knows though, infinite possibilities.

I don't think that this is a good comparison at all. Life on earth exists, so we know for a fact that life on other planets is possible. Nobody has any proof that the existence of a god is possible.

I was just going to post this
What was that? Life on earth exists, so we know for a fact that life on other planets is possible. We know aliens exist because UFO's have been seen, that sort of comment should have been made several thousand years ago.

Nobody has any proof that the existence of a god is possible, what do you base that on? It is quite possible that someone somewhere does have proof that God (a higher case G refers to the one in the bible, a lower case g usually refers to one of the other gods). That person might want to believe in God/gods but not in a religion.

Were not saying (or at least I'm not) that we know life on other planets is possible, we're saying that we know life is possible period, where as we don't know that about God/god (there is no proof that he exist, that is a fact, or else it would already have been published scientifically and with proofs).

The difference to me is that tomorrow I can go in my lab and I could create life, I could reproduce what happened hundred of thousands of years ago when that droplet became a living cell. I cannot go a prove that God exist, no matter how much I believe or not that he does.

This is of course, not proof that aliens exist, far from it, but I do think the God comparison is weak.

It's a good point. There is no empirical proof of a god that can be assessed using the scientific method, not like the creation of life in certain environments.

I think I was focused more on the visitation of intelligent life being a good comparison to the intervention of "God" or "gods"--since all that exists are testimonials and witness' accounts.

This I completely agree with!

Okay, I'll try again. We know that under the right conditions, life can exist on other planets. That's a fact.

We know aliens exist because UFO's have been seen, that sort of comment should have been made several thousand years ago.
I don't know what that is supposed to mean.
Have UFOs been seen? Sure. UFO means nothing more than unidentified flying object. Were those UFOs of alien origin? I doubt it. There's no proof. Period. Faked photos and amateur videos don't count. And we don't know that aliens exist just because UFOs have been seen. A UFO sighting isn't necessarily proof for aliens. Who says UFOs and aliens are linked?
I also think we have to make a clear distinction between alien lifeforms (any kind of life found on planets other than earth) and the pop culture aliens and flying saucers.

Nobody has any proof that the existence of a god is possible, what do you base that on?
I base this on the lack of evidence, obviously.

It is quite possible that someone somewhere does have proof that God [...]
Yes, no question about it. But as long as that person doesn't show the evidence to the world, it'll be quite useless.
Now, I feel that I've got to make one thing clear. I'm an atheist (agnostic atheist, that is) but that doesn't mean that I won't accept that there's a god, in case someone puts up the necessary evidence. I'm not against god, I simply don't believe in god.

I think I was focused more on the visitation of intelligent life being a good comparison to the intervention of "God" or "gods"--since all that exists are testimonials and witness' accounts.
Yes, that I have to agree with. There's no solid evidence for either of them. Only people who claim to have witnessed something. They could be right, but there's no proof. In that particular aspect, they're really quite the same.

So we've agreed what UFO means, but to state that all sightings are of human (this planets) origin seems a bit much to me.
You stated that they (UFO's) are not of alien origin because there is no proof, what would you deem as proof, and is only considered proof if you accept it?
What about the hundreds of cave paintings from many parts of the world that seem to depict the same creature. Maybe that Roswel thing?
When you say that a UFO sighting isn't necessarily proof aliens exist, given that many UFO sightings are fake many of them could be real, so they might well be proof that aliens exist.

As I see it any UFO that comes from another planet is from a higher intelligence, that is based on them having the knowledge to go to another planet. Thing is, of all the different types that have been seen about the earth in the past few thousand years are they all from different worlds or the same world?
An arguement for the same world might be the lack of sightings at present.

As for if a person has found proof that God exists but doesn't tell anyone else, how is it that the knowledge is useless to him/her?
And for those of you who have tried to find god/God, what is a god/God? A supernatural supreme being or a supreme being?
