American Horror Story Season 5

Hotel. Gaga? Omg I already have no faith in S5. I could see using her as a guest appearance, but not the main star or even a recurring role. Hotel? Eh, that could be good if they do it right, similar to the first 2 seasons. But then again I also thought a freak show would make for a good horror story and we all know how terrible that turned out to be.

Yeah I just found out over Facebook. My interest waned dramatically with Freak Show (still not finished it)... this is just, urgh. So underwhelmed.

As you say Fuffy Baith, the hotel setting could be promising; getting back to the feel we had in Murder House and Asylum.
But Lady Gaga as the star; it just seems like yet another way of Murphy sticking music into his shows now that Glee is dead... because I have no doubt that she'll end up singing constantly in the hotel bar or whatever.

Also, is it just me or does the title sound really middle of the road? To be fair, I'm not sure what else I'd call it. But Murder House, Asylum, Coven, Freak Show; they all sound fairly dark and interesting on their own. Hotel? Not so much.

Wait this isn't a joke? I thought this was a joke...

I could see this being good if they made it ala film noir. But I have absolutely zero faith left in Ryan Murphy.

The joke will be in all you suckers that watch it! It will be The Shining: The musical.

Now if she was just like the lounge singer in the hotel then that would work. But a lead actress? no.

They could set it in the 20's. We just did the 50's why not go earlier. The Shinning or even A House On Hunted Hill (original) type of feel would work well. All I know is they really need to step it up and stop playing around.

Yea you're right, I will be suckered into watching it, hoping it gets better.

Mr. Pole beat me too it, ya modern day does not sound good for this theme, I mean, I can think of some pretty cool creepy things in my mind, but I know the show likely won't pull it off. I hope to be proven wrong

Yeah they've said it'll be present day. I reckon they'll do it like Murder House; have it in the present and show flashbacks revealing more and more about the hotel as it goes on.

I'm hoping it's a mistake that Gaga is the lead replacing Jessica Lange. If Lange is coming back in a lesser role I don't think they need a new star. As far as I'm aware they still have Sarah Paulson, Angel Bassett and Kathy Bates, it's not like they're short of strong female leads. But I dare say it's all true, because it's totally something Murphy would do. 🙄

Mr. Pole: "It will be The Shining: The musical."

That's exactly the first thing I thought upon hearing the news. Urgh dear :/

I think GaGa could probably do a good creepy/disturbing character actually. She might just surprise you all!

Thing is she has become too exposed at this point to have the desired impact on the show. It just seems like such a clitched thing to do. And the fact is she is taking the part which should be filled by a good character actor.

But you don't know... maybe she is a good character actor... I've never seen her act so I can't say for sure but she seems artistic and very devoted to whatever projects she undertakes so I'm sure she'll give it her all and I doubt she was casted without at least some kind of screentest.

I am not sure about that. Honestly. I think it was 'hey you want a part' 'sure' 'okay cool!' I dont think there was a screen test.
But she has had acting lessons and has had other acting jobs in the past. I just cant imagine a screen test happening between those two.

I haven't seen her much, but the little acting I have seen her do leaves a lot to be desired in all honesty. Though they have only been small roles. Like I said, if it was a guest spot, I could totally see it...just not sure 13 episodes of it will be something I rush to get home for.

If it sounds like a decent character, I'll give it a shot. But I'm more than a little worried, judging by the reveal vid (having her announce the title in one of her bizarre outfits) that Murphy will make it "The Gaga Show" starring Lady Gaga as Lady Gaga.

Watching the Facebook comments is a decent distraction from work though 😉

Excatley! And its just playing up to Gaga's stereotypical persona rather than thinking lets get a really good actress who look beyond playing that part in the expected way. As someone elses said it maybe Murphy nodding to his involvement with Glee too.

That and it'll also be to pull in new viewers. With Jessica Lange no longer a main character, they're probably anticipating a ratings drop... and Gaga, love her or loathe her, has a crazy number of fans who will tune in to watch her.

Yea but who really watches the show for Jessica Lange.? I mean she's good but they got other great actresses. Sarah paulson was great playing two headed lady last season. We want a good horror story. This isn't Glee, there's no need to bring a singer on add an actress. Ugh!

Oh I totally agree. While I do like JL, her leaving certainly wouldn't stop me watching (Murphy however...).
I would've been perfectly happy to carry on with Paulson, Bates and Bassett. Oh and Frances Conroy, I could totally see her as a spooky hotel owner now that I think of it. It's not even really as if Lange was always the star; her role in season 1 wasn't really any bigger than anyone else's. Personally I think Paulson could carry the show, I think she's more than proven that over the years, which makes this stunt casting pretty insulting 😕

I don't blame Lange for phasing her way out at all. I know she's probably just needing a break, but even so, she's doing it at the right time. I think she said she'd stay on as a regular if Murphy came up with something amazing. So yeah, can't say I'm shocked she's opted for a reduced role.
Plenty of people are bouncing off the walls about Gaga, but I've yet to see anyone that excited about Hotel as a concept. Mildly intrigued, sure, but nothing compared to previous season announcements.

Stay tuned for season 6 starring Katy Perry, Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift 😀
Oh and there might be some actors in it too.

Courtesy of Vanity Fair:

We still don’t know for certain how to decipher the major clue of last season. Ryan Murphy said that the recurring motif of the top hat (seen on coffee cups and on diner menus) was “a big Season 5 clue! It’s an arcane clue, but it’s very purposeful, and it illuminates something that you’ll be like, ‘Oh! You dirty b!’”

The clue being:

What if Murphy is simply referencing the classic film Top Hat? It’s a 1935 Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers musical love story set in, you guessed it, a hotel. And even if there weren’t a film called Top Hat, what do we most associate with top hats? Musicals, right? Consider Astaire (who famously sang about Putting on the Ritz. . .as in the hotel Ritz):

We know Glee creator Murphy loves musicals. More and more elaborate numbers have been working their way into American Horror Story from Season 2’s "Name Game," to Season 3’s Stevie Nicks obsession, to Season 4 which, let’s face it, was 50% musical.

But with Gaga in the lead, doesn’t it make sense that Murphy would go all the way? He has plenty of other musically gifted actors he could pull in for Season 5. Glee star Darren Criss, Andrew Rannells (from Murphy’s short-lived New Normal), Neil Patrick Harris, or, fingers crossed, a cameo from Jessica Lange. The list goes on and on.

The bottom line is this: FX president John Landgraf promised a “radical reinvention” for Season 5 and nothing we’ve seen so far fulfills that promise. A Hollywood hotel? Sounds like Season One’s Murder House redux. Lady Gaga? Radical, sure, but not really a reinvention. But a musical, a classic, old-timey musical. Well, that would be a radical reinvention.

And now the potential
You might think that Season 5’s modern setting blows the Top Hat connection. But what about this rumored casting call sheet?

ELLE is a 1920’s ghost that is between the ages of 20-30, who inhabits Carla, she is a corky girl, ready for adventure. She is involved in killing her parents with her unpleasant boyfriend. A Bonnie & Clyde relationship they share.

DANNY is a bell boy, also between 20-30 years old, at the hotel Carla visits, he is also the bartender who becomes infatuated by her. He is a boyish, man, the funny guy. All American White Male.

CARLA is 20-35 years old, confident, gorgeous, and classy, she will be the lead who is visiting this random town in Upstate NY, who is possessed by a ghost from 1920.

Once again, we’re deep in rumor country, but conventional wisdom has Gaga playing Carla. If she’s possessed by someone from the 1920s, well, that would be the perfect excuse to break out the Irving Berlin. And Gaga, as we know, has a thing for old standards. This song, “Cheek to Cheek,” is from Berlin’s Top Hat.

I was wondering how on earth the top hat fit into all this. The Top Hat musical one sounds like a decent theory. Never thought of that.

But a musical, a classic, old-timey musical. Well, that would be a radical reinvention.

I don't get this whole radical reinvention thing. It's a new story and a new setting each season... if that's not enough reinvention, perhaps there are other issues. Also if he wants to reinvent it, I don't know why he started connecting the seasons.

My glass half full side is saying that the hotel could get the show back to its roots and it could be a spooky setting in which a horror element is easier to maintain. My louder glass half empty side says that this will indeed be a musical and that'll totally detract from any real horror/spookiness.

He needs to pick a genre and stick to it. Otherwise it'll just be another big mess.

I tell you what.. I stopped watching after maybe half of season two. I hated season one and thought I would try two. I hated that more. But I tell you this, if it's a musical, a full blown 'horror' musical (not just the occasional musical pieces) real honest to goodness musical.. my pansyass would be watching every week.
