Andrew and the New Watchers

Andrew has changed, and I get the feeling Giles has noticed.

Giles tells Angel he's sending his "best man".

It was funny when you first heard it, but I don't think Giles was entirely joking.

At the core, Giles is a serious guy. The mission Giles sent Andrew on was a serious one. He has obviously developed some faith in Andrew's abilities.

He sends Andrew to LA as a representitive of what appears to be the "New Watcher's Council"

It seems important to remember the bit where Andrew tells Spike the Scoobs conference call. The insinuation was they do it on a regular basis.

Giles would know at least a little bit about W & H. Dawn would be on the computer researching. Willow too. They would all have their ears open. They seem to have the resources of the old Watchers available to them.

They would have enough information available to them to make informed choices. They've obviously made some kind of a group decision Angel is at the very least in over his head.

By the way Andrew behaves towards Angel at the end of Damage, I suggest Andrew is not just speaking for himself and Buffy, but from the group opinion of what seems to have become the New Watchers.

I agree with you on most of it, but I think that if Buffy wouldn't trust it, she'd come over to LA personally to straighten things out, rather then sending Andrew for an errant.

Well yeah, maybe, if Buffy was making the decisions, but Buffy didn't send Andrew.

She obviously has influence though. Thus the "Buffy doesn't trust you" comment.

I agree with everything you said, but I think that Buffy has to much to worry about right now then to take time out and come to visit Angel to straighten things out. I certainly hope we hear about the New Watchers council agian. Oh how I need a S8

When Angel commented on Buffy, Andrew replyed "Who do you think this order comes from." followed by "Buffy doesn't trust you anymore."

You know Allycat, on the face of it, this issue seems niggling, and not worth getting into, but I think you've put your finger on something that says a lot concerning the dynamic of the New Watchers so I'm going to continue.

Giles sends Andrew to LA. Buffy seems to accept Giles' decision, but sharpens Andrew's instructions concerning what he's to do there.

The New Watcher Council seems to run a lot like the old Sunnydale Library.

I agree that Andrew has changed into a more responsible and important part of the "Scooby Gang" (can we even call them that any more though? Considering they are not technically all together anymore?)

But for Giles to send in his best man, Andrew was not a joke. He knows what he's doing.

When we first see Andrew in this episode we see him as the funny, kinda stupid, adorable, but not really all that mature guy we know and love, but at the end of the episode we see maturity in Andrew I never thought we would see. He has changed alot.

Agreed, apart from the last part, but that's 'cause I can't remember how the old library was run (seriously).

Anyway, from this we can still conclude Buffy doesn't trust Angel anymore, which is absolutely too absurd for words, whoever thought out the ending of this episode should get a spanking!

I don't think it's that Buffy doesn't trust Angel anymore. I think its that Buffy believes Angel is way over his head, because, like you said, they are the new watchers council, who's mission is to train the slayers, so they probably have all the same resources. And with Wolfram and Hart going as far a pylia, as we saw in the end of season 2, they are bound to know enough to know Angel can't defeat it before it defeats him.

I wanted to post a spoiler here, but the tags aren't working yet.

Figured it out.
In the upcoming episode, we will find out that W&H has placed a fail-save device in the basement in case Angel might ever get out of their control.

Maybe remembering the dynamic of the way the Sunnydale library group worked can help us make an educated guess as to the way the New Watchers Council might be mirroring that dynamic.

On the face of it we had Giles as organizational head, and team leader from a planning standpoint.

Buffy was the field team leader, and maintained right of veto on final decisions in the field. The scoobs would accept the authority of either Buffy or Giles, but would on occasion form alliances supporting either of the 2 leaders.

This would all seem to create chaos, but it worked, because of the respect each member had for each other, and the knowledge they all shared of their individual strengths, and weaknesses.

Buffy for instance was quite content to allow Giles to make the decisions. She would listen to his council and allow him to lead. She might even have disagreed. It was only when she was absolutely gut-sure Giles was incorrect that she played the power card, and took control of the situation.

It is also important to remember the willingness of Giles to accept input, and consider the opinions of all his subordinates. Buffy respects this and will only rebel as a last resort.

In the case of what I believe is the decision on behalf of Buffy and the Scoobs, Angel is in over his head, and might be making, or have made mistakes, I don't think Buffy needs to rebel against Giles' decision to handle it the way he did. I suspect Giles and Buffy are probably, more or less in agreement.

Most likely the whole of the new watcher's council are in agreement. Remember, they conference call. It's like the library, only wired internationally.

Thanks for explaining it this way, makes a whole lot more sense. I agree with you.

First off, N4H, htat's the greatest banner I have ever seen, and can I join the fan club?

Secondly, as an Andrew fan, it's very cool to see him getting a responsibility of being Gile's best watcher and actually fighting the good fight and from what I hear, he showed alot of maturity in Damaged. Good for him.

And the fact that Buffy doesn't trust Angel was probably taken out of context. remember that the watchers council is very corrupt as well, no matter who is running it. Now I just think Andrew stretched the truth, maybe a lie needed to be told to make Angel realize what he has gotten into

I don't think it's really about Buffy not trusting Angel. It's more that Buffy doesn't trust the situation Angel is in. It makes sense for them to not want W&H to have a slayer in custody.

I agree with Hostile 17. The whole "does Buffy trust Angel" thing is a real tempest in a teacup.

To me the bigger thing in this episode is the bit where Andrew tells Spike he won't tell Buffy Spike is back.

It's big because Andrew can't do it. He has to tell her. He has to tell her what Dana has been doing. You can't understand what she's capable of, unless you mention the fact she cut off someone's hands. If Andrew is truly a professional now, he has to tell Buffy.

Damn SMG for refusing to give us Buffy back for even one stinky, little episode. We need to know where Buffy's head is at.

I'm going to boycott Gellar's next movie.

ok um SMG never said that she will never return to Buffy, she didnt want to return this year and well she cant this year since she is shooting a new movie all the way in Tokoyo and even if I were her I wouldnt go from there all the way to L.A and back to shoot 1-2 episodes, but I think that Andrew will end up telling Buffy from his constant babbleing.

When does Scooby Doo 2 come out?

What do you want to bet, we see Sarah between now and April, hitting the late show circuit, promoting Scooby Doo 2.
