I know FOX owns the distribution rights to the shows, so I decided to send them a quick email basically saying that Buffy will be 15 years old in 2012 (holy crap) and still has an incredibly dedicated fanbase who will buy the Blu-Rays and this would be a great year to release an Anniversary boxset or something. Angel will be 13, but still. They promptly replied to me with an answer

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for your email. Unfortunately at this time there is no information available in regard to if or when the series you have inquired about will be released on Blu-ray but your comments and request has been forwarded.

Thank you,
Customer Care

So I thought it would be cool if before the New Year we all email FOX and let them know that we want to see both shows on Blu-Ray. Here's the email I sent my message to...

foxconnect@orderassistance.com

I know some people don't want to see the show on Blu-Ray because it was meant to be gothic and dark (especially the early seasons). However, I just want some new special features, the idea of reuniting the casts of both shows after these many years sounds great and if they can get a roundtable discussion that would make my year and is enough to make me buy the sets

So this is my little campaign, I hope everyone takes the time, thanks 😀

I'm e-mailing them right now.
I think if they were able to convert the first few seasons into HD quality, that would be amazing, and I'd totally update my collection! But it IS expensive with special effects needing to be converted (look at smallville)

Hmm, it'd certainly be cool to have the option for everyone to get them on Blu-Ray, but I just recently bought the whole Buffy season on DVD, and that was expensive enough 😛

I hate that DVDs are going out now because I've spent so much money on them, and it would cost so much more to upgrade it all to Blu-Ray 🙁

I know. Same thing with the VHS tapes. Although I still have my VCR and I also play some tapes that I have from time to time. It's stupid for them to almost MAKE us upgrade by taking regular dvd's off the market. Call me old fashioned, but I just want the MOVIE, not special feature-palooza.

Personally, I don't like Blue Ray! While I support the series keeping up with the times and expanding its sources to everyone.. I defiantly won't be picking up a blue-ray copy. The first two seasons were shot in 16mm and then remaining series's were filmed in 35mm. BlueRay only seems to clear up the grain that the film gave it in the first place.. taking the film like quaility and giving it a cheap home-made look. Now, im not knocking HD or BlueRay, but when it comes to this series and many other series.. I think Joss's look was a film-grainy, movie like-show, and the tranfer would be taking away =)

I have noticed that watching older movies on Blu-Ray does give it that cheap home made look. You just convinced me to never give in to Buffy on Blu-Ray when that happens :p

Yea, I still have a bunch of VHS tapes, but I don't think I have anything that can play them 😛
Everytime there's a new and improved technology, there's always one that's going to come better afterwards, making the previous one obsolete 🙁

I think that technologically companies know what is the asolute best they can sell, but they make more money by slowly upgrading every few years 😡

This is what's keeping me from buying DVDs and blu rays. I'm waiting for the ultimate digital alternative. I know if I buy them now, soon they'll be useless.

I think it would be great if Buffy was released on BluRay, but I highly doubt I would ever bother buying it. I already have all the seasons on DVD, and sure the quality isn't super fantastic, but that doesn't matter to me.

I personally don't like BluRays, because I know eventually DVDs will no longer be made just like what happened with VHS, and we'll all have to convert. I just feel it was a waste buying the hundreds of DVDs we've gotten over the years, but since HD quality is the thing that's "in" now, we have to start getting BluRays without even having a say in it.

I watch Buffy because I enjoy the show. Sure the HD quality would be a bonus, but it's not really needed.

There will never be an ultimate digital alternative. Technology is always advancing, and will never stop, it's the way society is run, people always want to improve and create better things. Blu-Ray will be obsolete in 15 years or something, but I appreciate everything they are capable of doing now, like giving us more memory for less discs and having amazing audio and visual capabilities.

I appreciate Blu-Rays. Watching movies on DVD is like a joke now, when you compare quality of the audio and video...it's pretty bad. For shows like Buffy and Angel it's not that big a deal, because they were filmed on smaller budgets, but like I said before I want Blu-Rays for the special features

Great idea! Even if I don't really know if Fox will make a Blue Ray version of BTVS even if we all send them an e-mail. But let's try it!
;D

I guess ultimate was a bad choice, but at the very least I want to be able to watch it offline, one any device, move it around and sell if when I'm done with it.

This is sort of off-topic, but have you seen the price for the seasons on iTunes? Like $40, so not worth it! 😱 You don't even get special features, just a digital version of the episodes (which you can do with regular DVDs anyway) in which you can only watch on your computer/Apple device or a burned DVD.

[/rant]

A BluRay set would be really nice, especially if there was a bunch of new special features. And although I just got my DVD set in June, I would probably eventually break-down and get the BluRays too. 😛

I have both shows on DVD already, but I've upgraded most of my movie collection from DVD's to Blu-ray now, so I would probably buy Buffy on Blu-ray too if it's released.

I've resisted the urge to get into the BluRay format simply because our television has the DVD AND VHS players all in one unit. I'm hoping that we will be able to get along with it for a few more years, until I can find a TV/BluRay unit that we like. Of course, by the time that happens, BluRay will undoubtedly be on the verge of being replaced by whatever the next step in technology is.

Im glad I haved reached at least one person out there 😛

Im always for moving forward in technology. Blu-Ray does fascinating things. Im not suprised every title out there is getting a re-release on blue-ray, but honestly, most things do not need this update. Most everything out there is filmed with such high rate of film and quality. Im not really sure what they are doing on the tranfer, but I think its obvious how cheap it makes 'film' look. A sports dvd, animation, or a documentary, sure, give it the best definition it can get, eliminate all the dept of field you would like. When movies are purposfully shot in film to get a grainy look, a movie look, blue ray slaughters it, IMO of course- my rant is over, haha, but my struggle with blu ray continues 😀

I don't think BtVS is meant to be watched on Blu-Ray. It would be awesome if it was, 'cause I'd love to see those special effects in high def, but I don't think we'll ever get a Blu-Ray set because the conversion would just be too expensive.

With the new conversions coming from CBS for Star Trek TNG, all remastered from the original negatives and new special effects anything is possible. Buffy was shot with the same methods. When TNG sell through the roof the studios will begin looking at their own catalogs because it will create a new market. Not only Bluray but HD syndication as well. Buffy will make it to Bluray in the next 7-10 years.
