Can I be honest with you guys but after reading some books from the vampire chronicles I think Joss Whedon stole or atleast got some inspiration for the idea of Angel a vampire with a soul from the character Louis from Interview with the vampire.
Louis detests his new life as a vampire and rejects the idea to kill persons to drink its blood, despite the intents of Lestat, preferring to survive with blood of animals. Such as Rats and Chickens.
Angel does the same he spend a 100 years dining on rats and okay murderers
Louis also feels guilty when Claudia is made into a Vampire, so okay Angelus is a vampire who was like really really mean then went on the side of good yet the principle is the same.
What do you think guys?

ummm,..well Joss said he had the idea of Angel(the character) on mind since ....well,a lot time ago. Before that movie...

And anyways,...Angel has a soul, the gipsy curse, the prophecies and all...I think it's just a coincidence....if you think about it this way, Angelus can be compared with Lestat or Dracula...or another vicious vamp, and I really don't think Joss stole the idea...

And you're just saying that because David is hott in ur opinion.

Can anyone tell me from what year the book the Interview with a Vampire is?

Actually wasn't there a vampire called Barnaby (I think) back in the 70s or 80s in a series called Dark Shadows who was kind of a Black hero type.

Does that mean Anne Rice stole the character? I don't think so.

Off the top of my head, I can go back to Milton to the character of Lucifer for a character villianous by nature attempting to come to terms with that villiany.

Ideas bounce off each other and grow. It's not theft. It's natural process.

maybe he got some ideas from other sources but Angel is completely original in his personality, and almost everything else about him. There are many stories and shows around that are similar, doesnt mean ideas were stolen. Others ideas often inspire people, but i really think Angel is original.

Well im not surprised, Joss usually bases some of his charecters off of other charecters.

Like Spike and Dru being the vampire version of Bonnie and Clied(one of those crazy couples)

I don't know what to say...I think Joss might have gotten some ideas from it, but he took it and came up with the other stuff..The how's and the why's....So that makes the character his own...Completley origional..Completley fun!Completley...Hot!

It's normal that some parts of Angel's personality was taken from other shows/books...But Joss made it original...

That is true

That is true James Martsers in many interview has said that Spike is meant to be the Sid Vicious of the vampires and Drusilla has meant to be nancy.
Also Spike has a very strong resemblance with Billy Idol and also Joss is always taking referencec in the characers lines
Such as:
Faith: Aren't you down at hogwarts
Buffy: I kIng Artured the sword out of the stone
Buffy: She's our Sabrina

Nerd4hire hit the nail on the head-EVERYTHING is a copy off of something! There was also a early 90's series called Forever Knight that dealt with a similar topic. Even if you are taking an idea from something, as long as you change it vitally, you are making your own idea-Vampires are a long-standing myth-does that mean that everyone who uses vampires in their stories are copying off of each other. No, they use it in their own way-that's what makes Blade and Buffy different from the Vampire Chronicles and Dracula. They all have their own sense of originality.

Hello

Yeh but Angel's character just looks like a proper copy I mean drinking blood from rats because Louis does not want to take human life.
And when he bites Claudia the guilt Louis feels and how that can be compared with when Angel in the episode salvage when both Angelus and Faith are in Angel's life and are shown in a flashback of how someone shoots the guy working at the coffee shop and how Angel takes advantage by drinking his blood and the guilt he feels after that. That he even screams out load.
And Joss does copy quite a lot.
In the episode the Becoming Part One, the guy who shows Angel Buffy and how he can help her and be someone, was called Whistler which is exactly what Blade's mentor is called that helps him come to terms with being half human and half vampire.

1991, I believe. BtVS didn't air until 1997.

Beg to differ.... the first print ran in 1976. 🙂

My sister is a big Anne Rice fan and has all of her books. I remember her reading Interview... when i was still living at home, and i was married in 1991, and she'd had the book for a few years by then. She knows the book off by heart.

I Think that gives Joss quite alot of time to develop his ideas don't you think so?

Maybe he took sth from the book and movies, but he developed the character of Angel in someone completely different and original...

Maybe but read the book or at least see the film and see the striking resemblence between the two characters

ive read the book yes they are similar, but theyre so many books and movies that are similar to one another, doesnt mean they copy off of one another, people get ideas from others all the time, but Joss has made Angel his own, maybe it gave him an idea but Angel in itself is Joss's creation and is completely original.

Let's be honest guys and okay so maybe Joss did not copy the idea of Louis the vampire and made it into Angel. But there are certain things such as in the book Armand even mentions that Louis has a soul.
Armand : Decadent, useless, They can't reflect anything, but you do. You reflect it's broken heart. (Louis is speechless.) Vampire with a human soul, immortal with a mortal's passion. You are beautiful my friend. Lestat must have wept when he made you.
That is what really made me suspicious that this character has been copied.
