Angel Season 6(ish) Canon Comics

When IDW first started talking about an Angel series they were making noises like the series would be, if not canon, then at least canonish. They suggested a greater connection to Whedon than what later turned out to be the case.

I bought the first 2 issues based on that. They turned out to be over-priced, not canon, or even canonish, and I thought boring.

So now they want to create a canonish credibility for the previous series by bringing in characters from there. If they do that I will question how much input Joss actually has. I don't see him signing on for that. In fact if Joss doesn't have his own ideas on what characters he wants to use, I'm not sure I'm interested.

Well, I think the fact that Joss has said he's involved is really enough. In the end, if there's something he doesn't like, it won't get in. Simple as that. If he's down with introducing IDW-original characters into the canon - and therefore verifying the canonical status of the original story - I think that's enough.

I think if Joss wasn't going to have the last word on the decisions and the direction, it wouldn't be billed as "Season 6" in the same way Dark Horse's current series is billed "Season 8." IDW could have easily gotten away with putting out the little, unintrusive, under-the-radar stories they have been since they began production.

The writers and fans can cry all they want for that quirky little fish demon from Spike: Asylum and Shadow Puppets, but in the end it's Joss' word as gospel.
 
I'm excited about this. I wish it would be an ongoing series like Buffy s8, but a 12-issue limited series works too I guess. I have a few questions though. I doubt they can all be answered right away, but I might as well see what comes up and what all your thoughts are.

Is Brian Lynch going to be the only writer? Or will we see different writers write different arcs like on Buffy?

Who's going draw the comics? And who's going to the covers? (Will it be as good as the Jeanty/Chen combination?)
 
Please, no giant levitating psychic fish (although I liked that he had a bit of a 'tude). And yeah, gotta get some top tier artists working on this. Joss can make it all happen if he wants to.

Well, Asylum was about Spike, through a series of unfortunate events, finding himself locked in a rehabilitation center for dangerous demons. The whole mini is about him trying to break out, and along the way he picks up some new friends - like the aforementioned fish demon, who a lot of fans seem to have been taking a liking to. It's not a bad read (as IDW seems to be upping their game a bit of late) and it's out in trade now, I believe.

Shadow Puppets has only just started, but it's written by the same wordsmith as Asylum. Basically, it's supposed to be about Spike discovering there's another version of Smile Time in Japan and setting out to take it down. I'm wary of this one, as it promises to turn Spike into a puppet in the same way that Smile Time did Angel, but it seems that Quirky Fish Demon will be making a reappearance as well.
