Angelus: obsessed or in love?

What we once were informs all that we have become. The same love will infect our hearts – even if they no longer beat. Simple death won’t change that.
Darla in The Prodigal

Angel and Angelus aren't two completely separate entities, there are parts of them that overlap, certain things that they share.

Do I think Angelus was in love with Buffy? No. Did he have the capacity for it? Who knows. I've read some fantastic fics that believe he could have but that isn't really relative to this discussion.

What I think Angelus felt for Buffy was lust, ownership, obssession and a twisted fascination. However, I also I think he felt echoes of the emotions Angel felt for her. There are several times we see him almost tender with her (IOHEFY and in Passion, watching her sleep, stroking her hair) this is reinforced by the fact that he really never physically hurt her.I think Angelus wanted her, in the mos base ways but I think he needed to understand her. He wanted to explore her, disect her...find our how this slip of girl, like so many others he had killed in his life, could bury her way so fully into Angel's heart, and how he could still feel parts of that when Angel had been expelled from his body.

Buffy was his 20th Century Drusilla. He thought he could break her just like Dru. He even knew exactly how to get at her but what he wasn't counting on was her sheer force of will. He couldn't break that.

To me Acathla doesn't really make sense. Like Spike, Angelus enjoyed the spoils the human world had to offer him. He could have taken his family and left and forgotten all about Buffy...all about Angel.

He could have just killed her. He never actively tried that either. Acathla seems almost like desperation. If he couldn't have her then he would have nothing.

I think Angelus' obssession with Buffy was as powerful, at the time, as Angel's love for her. But they were two very different emotions.

Angelus didn't love Buffy but he wanted her. He wanted her broken and he wanted her wanting him.

What he realised was that it was never gona happen.

Interesting thoughts. I agree that the Acathla thing was a act of desperation, he was feeling filthy and wanted to be made pure, but I doubt he wanted her wanting him. He wasn't that much about seducing, more about breaking.
I think Buffy and Angel did love each other, that's not the point. We're talking about Angelus.

And as for the Spuffy comparison...I'm a diehard Spuffy fan, but I'm truly not sure I believe that Buffy ever did love Spike.

I'm talking about Angelus to 😀

Truly, I don't belive Buffy loved Spike. But I belive she felt something that was close to love. I belive she loved Angel the most, then Riley, then Spike..

You think she loved Riley more than Spike? Well, that's just insane. :P

exactly my opinion...he loved Angel the most, then Riley but not in a true and meaningful way and then Spike...but with the last one he had a meaningful relationship...not love but maybe friendship and understanding
Even if it's going against what feelings are going on on the screen, Joss is still the one who created the show and we have to take his opinion into account, if not only a tiny bit.

Ok, I agree with princess buffy on her point above. When I gave PB karma, I called myself a spangeler? yikes! I mixed together spuffy and bangeler. I'm cool like that 😉 haha, I meant spuffy shipper.

Apangeler might actually be interesting, if you could slip Faith in there as well. (Faispangler?)
I have to lean towards obsession here. I think Buffy was very much like his obsession with Drusilla. He hated Buffy for making Angel fall in love with her, something that Angel had ever experienced before and Angelus did not like having to deal with that kind of residule feeling. I also think that Angelus was incapable of truelove so therefore could never love Buffy. So yeah, obsessed is where I am going with this. 🙂

It wasn't about seduction, it was about power. He wanted Buffy to need him so he could control her. He wanted to dominate her. Or at least that is my interpretation of season two.

This might prove to be shocking coming from a Bangel fan, but... I honestly don't think Angelus loved Buffy. I think he HATED her. Worse than he hated anyone in general because he was evil. He hated her because she made Angel happy and virtually non-evil. The demon in Angel was surpressed because of his soul, and basically the evil inside him had to sit back and watch so to speak as Angel did good and fell in love with Buffy. So, once Angelus was freed he went all extra-evil. I also disagree with Angel being in Angelus. I think Becoming Part 2 proves that with him saying he felt like he hadn't seen her in months. There is no part of Angelus, in my opinion, that has a speck of Angel in him.

He was just pure evil. I don't think he was in love with Buffy at all, I think he was obsessed with killing her, but that's it. I don't think Angelus had it in him to ever love or even care for anyone else. He was just down right evil, vicious, and cruel.

I totally don't buy the "soulless vampires can't love" position. Spike and Dru are our finest examples of vampires in love. As Druscilla said, "we can love, if not wisely." I believe Angelus loved both Buffy and Darla, though he might not have been aware of it on a conscious level and would probably let either of them stake him before he would admit it. His love for Buffy was certainly intertwined with possessiveness, obsession, and even hatred.

I agree, that wasn't pure love, there was a lot of things going on, but I think love had something to do with it. In the end, Angel was deep in Angel somewhere waiting to come out 🙂

I believe some vampires can love, but it's not the default. And I do not believe Angelus was capable of love. I'm pretty sure Angel even said he wasn't at some point during Angel (the show). I think it was obsession and hate, not love.
