I have a friend. A friend who, for now, shall remain nameless. I graduated from film school with this friend. When he graduated, he moved out to LA to persue the dream that is filmmaking. Ever since then, he's been working his way up the corporate ladder. And just this week, what we have tentatively titled "his big break" broke.

He was asked to help produce a new Buffy the Vampire Slayer animated series.

Details are still a little vague, but the show will (at least start off as) an adaptation of the Buffy comic books. He described the series as "motion comics." Will they be taking the original artwork and frames, just adding motion and sound effects, like the Watchmen motion comic or will they prodce a more traditional animated show, using the comic books as storyboards, is not yet certain. And what comics, exactly, is also uncertain. Is it some of the original comics that were released during the show's run? Or is it from Buffy's "Season 8?" What is certain is that because they're using the comic books as their starting point, all our favorite characters will be returning and this animated series will compliment the original series. Whether any of the original cast will provide voices is uncertain (though I'm doubtful). But Joss Whedon is involved.

As my friend put it, "Whedon's involved, but not on an "˜in-the-studio' kind of way. He will pop in at bench-marks and give the thumbs up to make the studio happen. Not as much involvement as any of us want, but its better than not any at all."

Count me excited. I've long said I wished that Whedon and company would make the Buffyverse America's response to Doctor Who.

Should be interesting if it ever happens. But if it's true to begin with it still sounds like they got some way to go. So I won't get too excited just yet. Anyone that's more at home at Whedonesque and know how reliable the source is to begin with?
 
If this is what I believe it to be then I'm not going to get too excited yet. I've seen this sort of thing before and was never too impressed with what I saw. It's pretty much just animating the comic book artwork so give the effect of movement, rather than animation in the truest sense.

Be glad to be wrong though, if they really are considering making an animated version of season 8 then I'll be onboard, as long as it's actual animation rather than moving still artwork around the screen.
 
Motion Comics are lame. If its an actual animated show that would be awesome, but if its just a Motion Comic I couldn't care less
 
I remember back a few years after the cancellation of the original "Star Trek," but before "The Next Generation," there was an animated series, supposedly covering the final 2 years of the "five year mission." The same writers as worked on the live show did the stories, and the actors even reprized their characters' voices, which only took, as I recall reading, only a few hours per episode, which made it quite convenient for the actors without interfering with anything else that they might be doing. They could even read their lines while on location by using a local sound studio and sending the recording back to the production company. While the animation left something to be desired, everything else about the show was far and above anything else of its kind. If the same thing could be done with Buffy, given the advances in computer animation that we have today, the end result could be truly awesome. The only down side that I could see would be that it might take away from comic book sales, especially if the storyling merely animates Season 8. I could be wrong about that, though. The "Death of Superman" animated movie more or less followed the storyline as written for the comics, though in a condensed version, and it seemed to be fairly successful.
 
The animation on the Star Trek show wasn't amazing but it was at least true animation, whereas this idea probably won't be. I'd love to see a real Buffy Season 8 animated series, especially with the true actors doing the voicework, as was planned with the original Buffy animated show, but I don't think this is what is planned here.
 
The Death of Superman wasnt a motion comic, that was an actual cartoon.

I think it says that S8 us just a storyboard so they can actually animate it.

My mistake. I've never seen anything in that format before. Not much different than having someone read the comic book to you while doing different voices for the different characters. Oh, well. That's no threat to Season 8 at all. Too bad. A truly well animated, well written show with the original voices, or at least someone who SOUNDS like the originals, could be great. To me, this is just a glorified slide show.

Too bad. Really had my hopes up there for a moment.

But I agree, a true animated series could be great, if done correctly.
 
Yeah i miss the ol' animated series idea. I love watching that little preview/first few minutes on youtube. it makes me go arrrgh wish it had really happened!
 
I'm all for it, if we can't get a real animated series.

I assume they'll be doing the season 8 comics, since that's what Dark Horse and Fox are promoting now.

I keep hearing how "motion comics" are a cutting-edge thing, but they were doing it way back in the mid-1960's with the Marvel Comics characters... those cartoons were still being repeated when I was a kid, and I remember thinking how cheesy they looked.

I'm not sure why a real animated series would be so difficult or expensive to pull off. You can do all the work on a computer nowadays, and there are plenty of talented young animators that would kill for a break like this.

The only challenge would be making the animated version resemble the printed version stylistically. You could get Georges Jeanty to do the character designs and consult on the animation.

The voice-acting part should be easy. None of the actors have to travel and there's no need for them to be together on a set at the same time. The actor can pop into any recording studio whenever he/she can find the time, record the lines, and send them off to the producers. SMG might still hold out for her usual reasons, but I could imagine all the others being on board.

Yeah, I remember the Marvel things from back then. We would all sit around in the dorm lounge and jeer and throw popcorn at the tv. I can't remember anyone who enjoyed them.
I can't believe how down people are on this, damn. I personally really like the original Astonishing #1 motion comic thing they did. What bugs me is the way they animate mouths moving in more recent versions...looks overdone and really stupid IMO.

I think it would help if they were actually designing the thing from scratch, rather than just adapting existing comics. But with good voice acting, music and sound effects, the Buffy one might actually be good.

I bet the new Spider-Woman: Agent of SWORD motion comic they're doing will be a good example of what's truly possible. They've been working on that one for so long, pushing back the release date for months.

It says they dont know if they will use the s8 comics, or do new animation, and use the s8 as a storyboard. But it says its being described as in the style of Motion Comics, so my hopes arn't high.

A source is revealing that the beloved cult vampire classic, which made the move to comics after the show ran it's course, could be returning to the small screen in an animated show based off of the comics. Very few details are available, but it stands to reason that the show will continue in the Buffyverse Whedon had created, thus being more appealing to fans.

I hope they mix it with the style of a cartoon with the actual comics and also have their mouths move. It would so freaking cool if Jo Chens covers got animated!
