Anne Rice's 'Vampire Chronicles' TV series lands at Hulu

So the first 11 books have been green lit to be adapted. Anyone else really excited? I know we have been talking about the Buffy Reboot but to be honest this is much more to my taste. I have a been a fan of this book series for over twenty years and to finally see it brought to television, and by the writer herself is a big deal to me. The last time she was directly involved with her own screenplay was with Interview with a Vampire and it was a great film adaptation, except for a few minor things. What do you guys think? Any other Lestat fans here? 🙂
 
Oh wow... potential. Lestat has a great backstory to dig into. He’s not really my favorite, but he doesnt have to be because there are so many different interesting characters that could be cool to see on the screen for the first time/again
 
Its really great this is still underway Anne Rice has been working diligently with her son on this for a really long time. Its like 10 or more years in the making.

So nice to see a passion project brought to life. Its definitely a creative pursuit and not a cash grab where in the network wants "the next thing" of something else.

I have only read a few chapters of one of the novels in the school library (homoeroticism, thank you) and The Queen of the Damn which was not my cup of tea. will be curious if there female characters.

Claudia (insane child w/ adult mind) and Gabrielle (Lestat's mother/lover) are prominent. They're Dru and Darla's predecessors. Akasha is the 1st vampire in TVC & treated as the head of the family like the Master + origin lore, but more powerful.
No, not excited at all. Unless things have changed as far as the creative side of it goes. I think it's doomed.
 
Wonder how many seasons they've planned for it, as that's a big time frame to go through in 11 books

When last I heard her son Christopher will be overseeing the series. That's the part that scares me. I would rather them get an established showrunner with a good track record. Let the Rices be advisors, but they should stay away from the actual creation of the show. That's my two cents.

If they do it the same way that Armstrong's "Bitten" series was adapted, they'll take the basic premise, maybe most of the original characters, then pretty much ignore the actual text of the books. It'll probably wind up being more a rip off of "The Vampire Chronicles," and "True Blood" than anything else, only not done as well.
 
The Bitten adaption wasn't penned by Armstrong, which is why I do not get the, the creator should not be the showrunner logic, of course they should.
 
I definitely don’t think they should. They’re too close to it, too attached. And they may not understand what works on tv (as a seasoned professional might)


Have input, certainly. Creative control... different ball game.

But then, that comes from someone who thought the books became unreadable because Rice loves and adores her characters far too much. And has too much confidence in her own narrative / editorial powers.

Exactly. Even at that there's a huge difference between directing a few episodes and being the actual showrunner. Having to control the writer's room, the production aspects, keeping everything on schedule. Doing Vampire Chronicles (and the expectations which comes with it) seems like it would be a massive understaking for a rookie showrunner.

But then again, the first film adaptation was pretty great. It was faithful to the book and yet was also true to the directors vision. If they can strike a balance like that I think it can be fantastic.
I feel good about Anne rice and Christopher being involved because when the creator loses too much control over their creations, we get adaptations that can become travesties. Look at the Queen of the Damned movie . Nothing about that movie except the names of the characters was like the novel . Also I don’t think they plan to be showrunners.

If they cast actors that actually looked like the characters and stuck to the story, sure, I'd watch it.

I thought that Stuart Townsend did a brilliant job in Queen of the Damned, but they mangled the story so badly, it hardly resembled the two books which the film was based on. (However, the soundtrack and goth theme were so amazing, I was thunderstruck!)

I think the Vampire Chronicles could be done for the small screen, but...meh, it's kind of iffy.

This 100%. Stuart was amazing as Lestat( except for the red hair) and I still have the soundtrack because it’s thats AWESOME. But they butchered the story beyond repair and absolutely destroyed two of the best books in the series. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for now, Anne herself seems to be very involved in the casting and this series seems be a passion project for her and her son, so we will see 🙂 I have a wanted this to happen for years so I want so badly for this to be good!!

Lestat didn't have red hair. Perhaps you're referring to Jessie? 😛

In both films, (Interview with the Vampire and Queen of the Damned) Armand was far too old. He was supposed to be 16 or 17, I believe. Either way, Akasha was perfectly cast. I remember that Anne wasn't happy because she portrayed Akasha as white-skinned; however, director Michael Rymer argued that a woman from near Egypt would have brown skin....good for him! As a writer, I understand Anne objecting to having her character's appearance changed, but Rymer had a point; plus, we got to see Aaliyah's dance in the vampire bar, so I'm totally okay with that!

I STILL have a major crush on Stuart as Lestat. *fans self briefly* He was just SO amazing. And I enjoyed the humour of Marius sneaking into Lestat's home. Now that I think about it, their later relationship reminds me of Angel and Spike; an "abandoned" vampire finally confronting his maker years later.

As for any mention of Tom Cruise as Lestat...just shoot me now. That ridiculous blond wig and silly face...oh God, what blasphemy.


Oh, hey...I totally own the film and soundtrack! ❤

I agree that Stuart captured Lestats rockstar persona perfectly. Although I will admit I also LOVE Tom Cruise as Lestat in the Original ;)
