Anya's Death

I really enjoyed Anya's character and I think her death was SOMEWHAT justified as she spent a millenium torturing and brutalizing men causing much pain and destruction and in the end she gave her life to protect someone who happened to be a man. It gave her character some redemption, because I believe for the most part Anya's character was the only person that was evil and then turned good and didn't have any remorse or any need to seek redemption. It was almost like "I killed a bunch of people and now I'm human again, oh well." There wasn't that guilt like with Angel, Spike, Willow, and Faith. So yeah I thought her death was fitting, I wish she didn't die, but I mean Joss said he killed her because Emma made it clear if Buffy were to return for a Season Eight she didn't want to return.
 
They needed to kill somebody, and Anya, like Jenny in Season Two, was the only one that really would've worked.

I mean, she'd be in there since Season Three, and she was a great character and a lot of fun and we'd grown attached to her, but she wasn't a core scooby.

So, we'd be sad at her death, but it wouldn't end up stopping any more additions to Buffyverse or losing the statement of hope, light at the end of the tunnel that the end of 'Chosen' was meant to give.
 
I knew Anya was gonna die do to the spoilers, but see it was totally different. I wasn't expecting her to die so quickly like she did.I had thought it would have been towards the very end , like she was hurt and die in Zander's arms. It did make me cry.I loved watching her on Buffy.
 
i just watched this episode again today and Anya's death is one of the few things that ALWAYS makes me cry. (I cry in many other episodes but not all the time - depends on the kind of mood i'm in). I love Selfless and in that i suppose we get the forshadowing that she is not going to make it (her song in Selfless also usually makes me cry). But Anya has lived a long, long life so it is sort of acceptable that she dies in the final battle but its still very sad (and brutal).
 
Her death was sad precisely because it was so incredibly pointless. One minute she's angry about bunnies, the next she's lying dead and sliced in two on the cold floor of the crumbling school building in a town on the verge of total destruction. And when Xander goes looking for her, it's a small mercy that he never sees her in this state. How would he have reacted? I must say, I found his subsequent reaction, upon finding out what became of her from Andrew, quite unsatisfying. She was the love of his life and yet he seemed quick enough to accept her death. I suppose he'd already gotten it into his head that most of them probably wouldn't make it out of Sunnydale alive and so had prepared himself for such an event in advance. Still, the reaction seemed too hasty. Could have done with a little more development.
 
I personally liked the script that had Xander dying. And at the end his hand popped up out of the rubble. It was an alternative script. I thought it would have been more SHOCKING for him to die than her.

Well on the commentary Joss says that Andrew is lying to make Xander feel better, telling another story. So I don't think Anya saved his life. They were toegether, but when she was sliced and diced he was no where to be seen.
 
Even though when I watched the episode for the first time I knew that she was going to die, I was still shocked by how it happened. It's so sudden. also, I disagree, I think she was quite remorseful about her acts of violence, not necessarily when she first became human, but in later seasons, especially in Selfless, you see that she has regrets about her actions, and I think that there's a certain sadness to her character that was never really explored.
 
I really wanted Anya to live, but, it's Joss we're talking about here! I thought it was kind of nice how she died, protecting Andrew. I think she kind of redeemed herself when she saved Andrew because she put people though hell when she was a demon and she always thought about herself (and Xander), but when she did that she didn't think about herself and that showed me how much she changed.
