Anybody else a little brassed off with Joss?

I know what you're thinking *Blasphemy Kean* but I just read the blog from the Paley Centre event that happend last night. Joss was of course asked about the possiblity of a movie, this is something we have all spoken about several times. I was a little shocked to hear that Joss would have no problem 'shooting down everything he had done in the comics if it meant he could make a movie with the actual people'. I know what you're thinking, time for the happy dance but we were told that the comic was canon, it's SEASON 8! I can't hep but feel extremely p***ed that he would completely rubbish the last 12 issues of which we have invested money and time in, so easily. It makes me question whether we should really take the comic as canon if he can so easily dismiss it when it suits him.

See, I took that answer not to mean de-canonfy the comics, but just stop working on them. He wouldn't be too bothered about stopping the comics completely if he could do a movie with the actors instead.

But I don't know whether this annoyed me or not. It would depend on whether I thought the movie was better canon than the comics. Haha. But I do get the annoyance- especially with how season 8 has made a lot of comics- such as Fray and Antique- canon due to crossoveryness.

On the other hand- yay movie potential. But my question always is, when it comes to the concept of a movie, what the hell is the narrative going to be? Or the setting? Wouldn't high school be an easier setting for a movie, but the guys are too old to play high schoolers anymore. But would that matter? Could we look past it? If they do something pre-season 5, would they still include Dawn in it? Would anything post-season 5 work in a movie capacity. It's all very conflicting and confusing.

I immediately read that as the comics would be nul and void. You make a good point about which canon would be better, although I can't hep but feel uneasy with how flippant he was with grinding them to halt. As far as a movie goes, in my pesonal opinion it would have to be after Chosen, anything else just doesn't make sense to me. They gave us 7 incredible years, they told the stoy well, I don't think we need to rehash it. Also, when they say movie does anybody else automatically see it as an Buffy AND Angel movie? I mean both gangs together?

Yeah, I think they'd have to join together. At least a little crossoverage. Because well, for a movie-sized battle I think you'd need both gangs to be fighting the good fight.

See, I always thought High School would be an easier place to set a movie story (other complications such as age and Dawn/No-Dawn aside) because I agree with what Jane Espenson said about there being so many untold stories in the High School. She said there's so much to be told but with the story moving along and the characters getting older they just didn't have the time. So I think they have a lot of unexplored stories they could go with for that time.

But post-season 7 would also be good. Hey, perhaps they could- since Season 8 is meant to be set after Angel season 5 essentially and technically making it season 9 not season 8- use a movie to tell the story of what happened in between season 7 and 8. I'd like to know how they ended up in a castle in Scotland for example. I mean that's just random. Haha.

And I agree that it's a bit bad about his flippancy with the comics. But while he's very into the comics right now and getting the story going etc, I think his loyalty would always lie with the live-action and the actors because that's where it all began and the answer he gave on the panel was just reflecting that I believe.

i think what he was trying to say was, if he could do a movie it would be huge, bigger to him than the comics are, because it would be such a rare experience for that to fall into his lap. So in comparison he wouldn't care about dropping the comics. But im not sure i took it as they would stop completely, as i did that he would stop working on them... doesn't mean he couldn't leave it to the rest of the writers and still let it be canon. Or maybe he'd just do season 8 and then not do season 9 (which im fairly certain he mentioned not too long ago that he was indeed going to do a season 9 as well).

I'm not sure what i would think. if the comics were brought to a close early but in the right way, maybe id be ok with it. But if they just... stopped... and left off stuff unanswered, id be annoyed.

But a movie... i mean... i can't say i wouldn't want to see that happen.

and with the supposed rumor of a buffy announcement in july, how come no one asked about that to Joss?

I agree with Keanoite, it would be downright screwing the fans, who invest their hard-earned money in buying the official continuation of Buffy (& Angel) only to have to find out it's not that official really. Personally though, I think the chances of a Buffy-movie are pretty slim. Any other character, maybe, but no Buffy/Sarah.

It's possible that he might not be writing it himself, perhaps the announcement is that [insert_writer_here] has been tasked with writing an [insert_character_here] spin-off. Like Brian Lynch doing Angel (and Spike), BKV gets to do a Faith limited series, or maybe Drew gets to do some more Dracula-stuff, or something along those lines.

Yeah, that wouldn't surprise me. You gotta think Dark Horse really wants to build on Buffy, expand the franchise any way they can.

wow while I havent gotten around to reading the comics and news and mention of a possible movie makes me do a happy hopeful dance I can totally see why the fans that bought the comics would be annoyed by his statement. But then again a movie is such a long shot that I wouldnt be too concerend about it.

I feel the opposite, I'd gladly throw out the comics from canon for a movie. But that's just me, I love watching, reading is fun but there is no comparison in my mind.

Possibly the only way Joss feels that he could work all of the original cast in would be to send the whole comic series into Superman's old Phantom Zone, since in Season 8 as it is written, they're all pretty much scattered, and Buffy's pretty much banished Giles to the outer limits along with Faith, plus the introduction of so many new faces and new sets would make any movie far too expensive.

I agree with Miss K though, I would feel cheated if Joss did it that way. If he's gonna actually make the movie, I would rather see a "Next Generation" type thing with guest appearances by the original stars and basically a whole new group of Slayers, and keep the events of Season 8 (and hopefully 9, 10, 11, 12...) intact. I know that even that would be looked upon as pure blasphemy to a lot of hardcore Buffy-ites, but, hey, better a half sandwich than starvation, right?

In the Faith arc, Giles said something to the effect that he was not welcome in the New Council, then Buffy got kinda ticked, to say the least when she got teleported into the middle of Faith's undercover mission. Then, at the end of the arc, Giles says something like, "well I guess it's just the two of us," Anyhow, I, at least, got the impression that Giles and faith were no longer on Buffy's "Bestest Buds" list. But maybe I imagined the whole thing.

I know I'm guilty of it myself but we have to be careful when not in the Comics forum about we say regards season 8. Lots of people haven't read them, so if you say anything remotely spoilery please give people fair warning so they can vacate the thread with their blissful ignorance intact.

I think Joss is just saying that hypothetically in the unlikely event of a Buffy movie he would rather make a new story line just for that one off big screen send off for Buffy.

But you're right, its been for the fans to get behind the idea of Season 8 being canon especially after the last stunt he pulled *cough*Batsu*cough* which from the other websites I've been to has, contrary to his high opinion of himself, lost him many fans.

Not to mention a lot didn't even want to read the comics, some have only just opened up to the idea, many are still cautious of it all, and we're not even half way through the first of two long term Buffy stories, anyone who does want to read them is going to *a lot* of bother to get their hands on them, enough to be stressed out about it quite a bit, everyone hanging on each month after *finally* getting Buffy back again.

And after the money Dark Horse has invested in two multi-year, 40 issue commitments that they expect Joss to honour, and want to supply the fans, for Joss to say he'd willingly spit on it all, throw it away for an hour and a half movie he'd be too hard pressed to fit everything into when the cast may not even want to, insulting the fans that way?

*calms down a second* he better get his act together and keep to his word, keep these comics coming or he'll lose what part of the fanbase he hasn't already lost.

After all this cussing and DIScussing, I do seem to remember Joss saying something once about him not changing canon unless "a better idea comes along." We know that he has already changed the (implied) canon of the Buffy/Rome/Immortal storyline with the excuse of "misleading Buffy's enemies," which is just one step up from the old "evil twin" crutch that fiction writers have been using since Romulus and Remus, and probably even further back than that. The truth, sad as it makes us, is that, as well as an artist, Joss Whedon is a merchant, and if modifying his product will give him a sale, then that's what he's quite likely to do. We may grumble and cuss, but if a new Buffy movie comes out, even if suddenly we discover that Buffy has been working as a jockey at Churchill Downs and Xander has been off on a construction site in Nova Scotia, while Willow and Giles have married and adopted Andrew while Dawn has gotten a job as a stripper in Las vegas, we'll still rush out to see the movie the first night it opens, and pre-order it on dvd from Amazon. We're sheep, people, and Joss is the shepherd. BAAAAA

Anyway, I pretty much agree with everything that everyone else has said. I'd be pissed if Joss threw out the comics to do a movie. Maybe not the canon, as I feel that, as a writer, he'll probably contiue to think of S8 as canon.

I think it's the fact that S8 has been broken down into the remaining number of arcs, we know who's writing those arcs and we're anxiously awaiting the arrival of

. I think that's what would get to me most. All the build up of the issues to come, we're all looking forward to a certain writer's arc, and then to have it all taken away for a movie would be cruel and unusualy punishment.

Yes, I'd flock to the cinema 12 times to see it, order posters of the internet, pre-order the DVD 8 months in advance, start making fanart 6 months before the first draft's been written, but I'd still be annoyed that I won't get to see certain things I was looking forward to in the comics.

Plus, no more Jo Chen covers, or Georges Jeanty art. Which would be wrong, lol.
