So, as the title says, anyone here know anything about Packet Loss reducing the speed of your broadband connection?

Basically my internet speed goes up and down like a yo-yo. I used to have a 5mb line, now on a good day I might get a 1.5mb line if I'm lucky, on a bad day, like yesterday and earlier today, I was down to a 22kb line.

I searched the internet for potential causes & quite a few recommended that downloading a program called Ping Plotter would identify where I am losing packets, which causes a loss in speed, but it's a bit over my head really.

What I want to be able to do, is contact my ISP and prove that it's their fault that the speed is so bad.

BT who provide the phone line say that that's working 100%, and AOL, say that they can't find a fault either & are blaming BT, but according to that Ping Plotter all my problems are caused by my Hop 2 which is an AOL proxy something, and I'm losing up to 100% of my Packets there.

I just want to be able to write & complain to them...AGAIN...that it's something to do with their network, but I need to word it well, so I look like I know what I'm talking about to some extent 'lol'

Anyone here able to help, or point me in the right direction? 😀 I know we have a few techy peeps around these parts. 😉

Thanks!!

Will rumor help. I can tell you about this thing I've heard people complaining about on filesharing sites. The allegation is when a person downloads over a certain amount, flags go up at the ISP, and they've been throttling the connection to slow the speeds.

conspiracy! I love it!
Yeah, I've heard that rumour too, and I would be thinking that if I hadn't had the same problem nearly 12 months ago, and then it suddenly went ok, and I had no further problems until just recently, like the past 2-3 weeks it has gone like it again.

When it happened previously I wrote a letter of complaint to AOL, and had a very nice Irish chappie phone me everyday for about a fortnight trying to sort it out for me, only to be told in the end, that it was to do with the local exchange. I did get a drop in package price from £29.99 per month to £9.99 per month but really that was the least they could do. It was just so frustrating when previously I had had their Platinum service for nearly 2 years without any problems, and then suddenly I'm told, sorry no, your line is only capable of 512kbps. What I find really weird is throughout all of this, my upload speed still remains at 448kbps, which is what it was when I was getting nearly a 5mb line.

Ah well, I guess at the moment, I'll just have to put up with it, as my only other option is to switch to Virgin Media who do cable broadband but you have to have their telephone service with them. All the other ISP's say that I can only get 512kb with them as well, so it's not really worth the hassle of switching.
