Serenity: the Unofficial Firefly Movie Blog

This blog serves as a record of the experiences of the cast and crew of the Universal Studios film "Serenity." The film is an outgrowth of the television program Firefly.

http://firefly-support.com/blog/

This is a good blog for people who want to keep up with the behind the scenes stuff happening while they film Serenity.

Members of the cast and crew contribute.

One thing I'm finding encouraging from all the Serenity talk is anyone who's actually read the script raves about it.

from the International movie database:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0379786/

The film centers around Captain Malcolm Reynolds, a hardened veteran (on the losing side) of a galactic civil war, who now ekes out a living pulling off small crimes and transport-for-hire aboard his ship, "Serenity." He leads a small, eclectic crew who are the closest thing he has left to family -- squabbling, insubordinate and undyingly loyal. When Mal takes on two new passengers -- a young doctor and his unstable, telepathic sister -- he gets much more than he bargained for. The pair are fugitives from the coalition dominating the universe, who will stop at nothing to reclaim the girl. The crew that was once used to skimming the outskirts of the galaxy unnoticed find themselves caught between the unstoppable military force of the Universal Alliance and the horrific, cannibalistic fury of the Reavers, savages who roam the very edge of space. Hunted by vastly different enemies, they begin to discover that the greatest danger to them may be on board "Serenity" herself.

Anyone Wanna Talk Firefly

It's been awhile since there was a Firefly thread. So whataya say. Wanna talk Kaylee, and Wash and Mal and the bunch.

TV Series or Serenity the movie (no movie spoilers without tags).

I love Firefly, and am really beyond excited for the movie.

I'll come back when I can think of something worth while to post. 🙂

I would love to talk about it...if I had actually ever seen it...lol...still trying to talk my sister into buying it, cause I have no money...I'm definitly planning on going to see Serenity when it comes out...maybe i should watch the show first though...

Well the movie is going to be something that people who have never seen the show, in addition to those who have seen it, enjoy and understand (at least Joss said something along those lines). But you should watch the show anyway, cause it's so good!! Make your sister buy the DVD Set 🙂

Well, speaking of the movie, what are your hopes for it? What things do you hope that they clear up, what things do you think they could do without?

No spoilers, just hopes and thoughts.

Other than the really obvious story lines that need to be resolved I hope that they finish out the story about Book and what his secret is. I'd also like to be a little more enlightened as to Inara's past and why she became a part of Serenity in the first place. I want to see more development between Kaylee and Simon and also Kaylee and Jayne. I've always felt like he had a special affection for her and maybe that's all, but maybe not.

Other than that, I hope it stays true to Firefly. Don't get me wrong, I want new audiences to be able to enjoy it also, but I hope that it retains it's original qualities and I have special hopes for little references and tidbits that will make longtime fans smile.

Also, how do you plan to see the movie? Do you have a friend that watched Firefly with you that you want to go with? Will this be your initiation to the 'Verse?

Firefly was always something that I watched totally on my own. It was my own special little escape. I've always really treasured that about it and I think that I want Serenity to be the same, I'm going to go all on my lonesome and love it.

And one final question, while I'm thinking about it, which episode(s) of Firefly did you most enjoy?

My personal favourites were Safe, Ariel and Objects in Space.

Many happy thoughts.

I'm hoping for the same things as you 🙂 I also hope Joss keeps the bit about there being no sound in space. I loved that.

My favorite episodes are Out of Gas, Ariel, Objects in Space.

And I'm kinda of curious, can you Firefly watchers tell who's in my sig? 🙂

You know those nutzoid, cannibal guys that fly around in space looking for people to ravage and eat? Are they called Reivers? I want to see more of them.

Also I want to see River really let loose with whatever secret power it is she has.

Kaylee and Simon... I don't like Simon as much as I adore Kaylee. Kaylee is such a woman of the earth. She really needs to get some lovin, and failing that she at least needs to get some. Kaylee and Jayne? What the heck. Why not. I'd prefer Kaylee and Mal though. Wouldn't mind a little Kaylee-Inara action either. So in short, Kaylee and anybody.

Oh, and Zoe. I really want to see lots of scenes of Zoe kicking butt.

I definitely want some explaination on the Book thing--in "Safe" he definitely seems to have a connection with the alliance, but its never really resolved.

I also want some kind of resolution on River. I just know Simon can help her eventually, and I hope he can use the info he got in "Ariel" to make her more stable.

Other than that, I just hope they don't spend too much of the movie rehashing the old episodes. I know that they need to explain things to people new to the 'verse, but the official summary sounds a lot like the plot of "Serenity".

I agree with you, Kaylee deserves someone who will actually step up and love her like she needs to be loved. I don't necessarily hope for a romantic resolution between she and Simon, just a resolution either way, no more of this halfway flirting crap (I realize that had the show had a chance to run it's coarse, we would have seen a resolution).

As for the Kaylee and Jayne thing, I think that he has a bit of a crush on her. Maybe it's "Romantic" or maybe it's just affection, which is a big deal for someone like Jayne. Either way, I always think of the scene in Serenity where he's crouched down looking through the infirmary windows at Kaylee.

I totally agree with you. I think that there definitely needs to be more about Zoe. I feel like she never really got her time to shine in Firefly (again, because it was cut short). I don't necessarily want to just see her kicking butt though. I think that Gina Torres is so amazing, her character is strong, tough and hardened by battle, but at the same time she's an incredibly warm, loving and affectionate person. I think the fact that Gina can convey all of this and that it appears natural all the time is really special and I hope she gets more time to show us just how incredible she is.... Plus, I think she is just amazingly beautiful.

Have you ever seen this old, under-rated, sleeper, gem of a movie called Strange Days?

Angela Basset plays a character who provides the muscle for the main character. There's a lot more to her than that though, and she so reminds me of Zoe. I'd recommend that movie to any Zoe fan.

What was your favorite character and why?

I really liked Kaylee because whatever happened, she always saw the bright side and kept everyone up beat.

I haven't seen it. Will look in on it next time I go to Blockbuster (which is just about never), as a true Zoe fan.

I don't think that I really have one individual favorite character. The more that I think about it, the more my head hurts. I simply can't choose any single one. I certainly gravitate to different characters depending on my mood or situtation, but overall, I think that I love them all equally... Even Early.

I have another question though. When people were talking about Reavers (or Reamers, "either would be appropriate" -Joss), it made me think of Inara's little suringe kit. I thought it was a suicide kit the first time I saw it, but Joss (in the Serenity commentary) said that it wasn't. Anywho, I hope that he touches on that in Serenity and also wondered if anyone else had any ideas about what it really was?

So I read the Firefly Dvd box instores. I unbderstand the backround information...Is this show like Star Trek? What is this show similar to in comparison to another show? Is it REALLY worth buying? I mean two of Joss' shows have really impressed me(Buffy and Angel). You don't have to give me spoilers or character information. Just what is the mood of the show? How are the actors? Is this up to Buffy/Angel quality? etc...Please don't recommend it just because your a big fan of Joss. Don't want to sound rude but just want to hear the truth. Thanks!!!

Blessed:

I loved it, though I have heard from other people who liked Buffy and Angel but didn't like Firefly, so don't just take my word for it.

I never really watched Star Trek, but that seemed a lot more like soldiers protecting the galaxy or somehting from what I've heard. This is a little less black-and-white: most of the people are in trouble with the authorities for some reason or another (they are, after all, a smuggling operation). I think the way Joss explained it, as an "outer-space western" is pretty much acurate.

If you like Joss' stuff, and you like sci-fi, you should definitely give it a try. Oh, and one very important thing: if you do get the DVD, do not, i repeat do not listen to Joss' rendition of the theme song in the special features section. It's just painful.

A note for the rest of you Firefly fans: Did you guys see the most recent (8/1-7) TV Guide? Mal was rated the 18th greatest sci-fi legend. Go Nathan Fillion!!
