Anyone Wanna Talk Firefly/Serenity

So I read the Firefly Dvd box instores. I unbderstand the backround information...Is this show like Star Trek? What is this show similar to in comparison to another show? Is it REALLY worth buying? I mean two of Joss' shows have really impressed me(Buffy and Angel). You don't have to give me spoilers or character information. Just what is the mood of the show? How are the actors? I can't really think of anything that I would say the show is really similar to. I think the whole point of the show was that it doesn't really fit into any cliches or simple catagories. It's a lot more complex than alot of stuff out there.

Basically, the way that I personally categorize the show is as a "sci-fi western ensemble". It's set in the future so there's the sci-fi part, but in the future, people kind of had to start over in alot of cases, which gives you the western part, and mean while, it's just people being people and experiencing things together and developing relationships, al la, ensemble.

I'm having trouble comming up with a mood for the show, overall though, I'd have to say that it's honest. Does that make sense to anyone else with an opinion on this?

The acting is, in my opinion, for the most part well above average. All of the actors have the ability to play multi-faceted charecters. There are very few one-dimensional or transparent characters on the show. Even the one shot characters are really well developed in most cases.

The show is most definitely up to the quality of Buffy and Angel, and while the main purpose of the show (people and relationships) is also similar, the rest of the show is very different. The style, the look, the feel and overall "aura" of the show are vastly different. So don't go into it expecting the same thing (that's where most people's dissapointments were), but I definitely recomend Firefly as a worthwhile investment. I know that I've personally gotten *SO* many hours of enjoyment out of mine.

I thank the both of you for sharing that info. with me. For some reason I enjoy buying box set dvds!?! I think this does sound like a good investment.
 
Speaking of the Firefly dvd set, did anyone find any easter eggs? I seem to be completely inept when it comes tofinding such things.
 
I found it. Ok. You go to the special feautes and highlight Joss' rendition of the theme song. Press the left arrow on your remote and hit your "ok" button.

There's a couple of other ways to get updated news on Serenity other than just visiting it's website.

If you go to Whedonesque.com and scroll down to the spot on the right where it says browse by category, click on Firefly and you'll go to a page like the one below which gives links to current stories concerning Firefly and Serenity on the internet.

Also if you do a Google search on Firefly or Serenity, you can click on the news tab, which will give you current news on the subject. Scroll to the bottom, and you will receive an option to get news alerts by email from google every time the google bots come across a new story on the subject you select.
 
I just discovered that there are commentary reels on the DVDs (well, there go about five hours I could have spent packing for school...)

Aparently Joss likes to blow things up.
 
This isn't a bit news update just something that I came across just now:

This isn’t a big update on the Joss Whedon feature directorial debut Serenity, but it’s something that starts to put my mind at ease. This hasn’t been a stellar summer for Universal, and their two big films featuring space ships, Riddick and Thunderbirds, have been basically buried at the box office. I am concerned that the studio will not realize that these are bad movies, but will rather think that space films don’t fly, and thus will do bad things to Serenity when it’s released, like dump it in a few hundred theaters to die.

Adam Baldwin, who plays the tough guy Jayne on the show, thinks that the studio feels otherwise about the fairly low-budget film. Here’s what he recently posted on the official Serenity board:

A little birdy told me that: "The studio is robustly enthusiastic!"

Brother, we begin some really gnarly action sequences on Monday which will last for three or so weeks. I think we wrap on the 24th.

Thank goodness. As many fans as Firefly has, this movie could get burried if there isn't enough promotion--thats what killed the original show to begin with.

Also: I was flipping through the imdb boards, and aparently someone's been writing "Go see Serenity in theaters 2005" on one dollar bills. Its kind of a cool fan thing, and it is legal (I checked).

I just saw on one of the other threads that the opening day for Serenity is April 22, 2005.
 
I hope that they treat the movie well and give it it's dues, but at the same time, I hope that they don't get *too* enthusiastic about it.

From what I've heard so far, Universal doesn't have any big summer movies planned for '05. If they get too excited, they could postpone Serenity's release until June or July, meaning that it would have to compete against Star Wars and what all. While I'm pretty faithful that Serenity it going to be by far a superior movie, it just doesn't have the fan base and that kind of competition could really over-shadow the film.

I'll tell you what, I started both threads, so I'll just merge them, and change the title. It's less confusing. Also there's just 30 posts on this thread, and 2 on the other. I don't know if were ready for DVD, Movie, TV series and character threads.

BTW, what is it we Firefly fans are calling ourselves these days? Isn't it Browncoats, or something like that?
 
Maybe if we have a bunchof different discussion threads, the Senior Partners will give us our own section? *makes hopeful face*

I have no idea what we are now, browncoats sounds familiar, though, so it's perfectly possible.

Well, sports fans, it's official. The movie is shot. Done. And I couldn't be happier to be through with it. No more of that exciting, vibrant set, that warm camaraderie, that creative stimulus, free donuts... Excuse me. I have something in my eye... free donuts...

Oh, there's things I'll miss. But there's definitely things I WON'T miss.
In no particular order:

1) Fillion. People who are prettier than me are not supposed to be funnier than me. I think it's a guild thing. And that whole 'gracious and professional' thing got old on day ONE, you know what I mean?

2) Cinematographer Jack Green. This guy lights stuff ALL THE TIME. Seriously, like eighty-three percent of the shots had light in them. He totally didn't get my "Just Like Radio" concept for the film.

3) The incessant meddling of the studio: where was it? We waited and waited, what, are they all too busy and important to take the time to ruin my little film? This is Hollywood, people. Learn our ways and customs while you're here. Sheesh.

Just a taste of the Hell I've been through. And being surrounded by beautiful women, and, let's face it, beautiful men, all of whom get along, work hard and play their characters with such ease and nuance it's clear they were born for the roles -- who needs that?

But no matter how much I suffer for my art, it's worth it. 'Cause come April 22nd I think we'll be bringing you an exciting film that's a powerful statement about the right to be free. Which is not as cool as my original statement about the right to tasty garlic mussels in a cilantro broth, but the freedom thing's okay too. The editing started this week, and after just a first cut I can safely say this will be the greatest film since whatever film comes out right before it. And I'm not backing down from that.

Thanks for your support. And I mean that more literally than people usually do -- Coming back from the Chicago Con and telling people there was a Serenity booth put up and run entirely by fans... you should have seen their faces. Hell, you should have seen mine. But not too close. And not before, like, 10:00 -- maybe 11:00 a.m. And maybe sort of from the side. The back-ish part of the side. You should have seen my hair.

Just got this for Christmas and watched it through. I loved it, so interesting and a few episodes really had me surprised, such as Objects in Space, War Stories and Ariel. One thing that interests me, how did the box set get a 12 rating. I mean in the last four episodes alone there was nudity, sex, gun violence and threatenings of rape (and that really shocked me, I felt really sorry for Kaylee).

Cant decide who may favourite character is, I really like River and Kaylee and I like Mal's torturedness. Plus Jayne's fun, as is Wash.

Also, how do you get the Adam Baldwin easter egg on the DVD? Everywhere says go to the Joss sings "Ballard of Serenity" and go left and press enter. However if I press left nothing happens. (-edit- Found it, Gag real, press up) One last thing, does anyone know any good firefly forums. I know fireflyfans.net has one but I dont like it, too...odd. Used to vB I suppose.

Anyway, was thinking some more people may have watched it, or want to talk about it some more.
