I guess it depends. Does the box office show the profit the movie is getting or simply how much people payed to watch it? If it's the first they're already making a profit. If it's the second they still got more than $500 million to go to get even. Quite the difference wouldn't you say? Maybe I'm wrong in how I'm viewing it.
So if it's the first by all means, pop the champagne. If it's the second I personally would wait a while longer.
I've never heard that kind of formula before. It seems pretty high. I would think that a 50% profit would be pretty good, and if the movie cost $150 million to make (that's only my guess. As far as I know, the actual cost has never been actually confirmed) I would think that the studio would be looking for somewhere between $225 and $270 million, which it seems well on the way to making.
Whatever the final number is, however, it is quite obvious that all of the critics who predicted that the audiences would stay away in droves were wrong. "The Legend Of Tarzan" has been successful in the most important matter. It will have sold more than enough tickets to pay production costs by the time that it ends its run. It doesn't have to be a blockbuster, it just has to make a decent enough profit to, hopefully, stir more interest in making movies faithful to Burroughs' novels, rather than the drivel that we've seen in the past, like the Syfy production of "A Princess Of Mars" with Tracy Lord as Dejah Thoris or "At The Earth's Core" with Doug McClure as David Innes.
