As a Bangel, how do you feel about the inevitable Spuffy ILY?

I stopped reading these comics when I felt like Spike became #1 priority and his feelings became more important than the titular character. Buffy has lost her self identity and from the last time I read one of these comics, she leaned on Spike for everything -- or so it felt like. I get wanting support, but I don't understand being in love with your crutch.

I get that JW is a stan of Spike/Spuffy, but my problem is that once again, he can't present the argument as to why Spike is the better choice unless he tears Angel down. Case in point, when he had Angel kill Giles. He had to do something drastic to push Buffy to a breaking point -- a line that would never be crossed if we consider the show canon vs comics canon.

Didn't buy it then, not buying it now.

Sure, Buffy says she loves Spike. I say that I love Mexican food too, but I'm not wanting to change my Facebook status to "In A Relationship with Tacos".

I absolutely agree that Spike is like a crutch for her. But more than that he is there to serve his purpose as the loyal boyfriend and that is it. Spike isn't even the dynamic character that JW fell in love with anymore. He is annoyingly well adjusted and his lack of personal story arc and growth would be insulting for me if I was a big Spike fan (which lets face it I'm not but I do enjoy a good story). I think they make some headway in Season 11 with Buffy's personal growth but I feel so disconnected with her character at this point that I struggle to see Buffy in some of what she does.

This is an interesting point because I was making the argument the other day that I think Joss wrote this amazingly beautiful love story in Bangel and then he just up and changed his mind. He said "Spuffy was the long term guy" and Spuffy was for him. The problem is that the set up for Bangel is pretty heavy handed. S1-3 its all about Angel. S4-5 Buffy is shown to still have strong feelings for Angel throughout the Riley mess. In s6 she reflects on not be able to be with Angel in "All the Way" and in s7 she says she loved Angel more than anything in this life. So the writing kept Buffy coming back to Angel over and over. It was like a giant elephant in the room. And I think that to some extent in order to try and really put a dent in the ship he needed to screw with Angel's character. But I think Angel is in large part "redeemed" as a character in s9 and in s10, the Scoobies and Buffy seem to be cool with him and Buffy admits she doesn't know what she feels about him, and she is visibly jealous when Dawn and Angel hug. So the writers are once again giving little tiny seeds of Bangel just enough to show its not completely dead. I sometimes wish they would just kill it all together. Fix the curse and lets find out what Buffy really thinks of her options then.

LOL. Truth!

This is just why I can't take the comics seriously. It's like the comics should be named "Spike the Peroxide Blonde Vampire" and it's about how he dates a dense slayer.
Buffy isn't even Buffy in the comics...
When you have to turn your heroine into a completely different character for a relationship to work, well then you should probably stop writing that relationship...

I think the big question is - where does Spuffy go from here? Now that I've had time away from the ILY, I know it's out there, etc. where do they take Spuffy and Spike as a character? Are they going to go all the way and marry them? That doesn't sound all that Jossy but then again - who knows if he even cares.

If they have Spike lose his soul in some way I'll flip my shit because that is enough with copying the Angel story arc.

It would be an interesting storyline if he, like Angelus, didn't want it back. And he really ended up being the big bad of the season. Though then I guess you have even more of a parallel to Angel so...lol...

Ugh, that reminds me of that stupid fakeout they did after Buffy and Spike slept together in Season 10. So lame.

Or Spike could lose his soul and he be like "I don't need a soul to love you" and Buffy could love the unsouled Spike the way she did and it should have been on the show. They could just retcon the whole getting a soul thing.

But don't you think that would undermine the entire mythology of the show - even more than what we actually got in canon did? Not to mention giving out an entirely wrong woman-falls-in-love-with-stalker message?!

But she was in love with him in S5. They could have continued off of and built from that instead of doing what they did.

Considering she didn't even bother to fake being in love with him when Spike chained her up and her life was on the line (via threat from Spike and Dru), I think you are off with your analysis that she was in love with him.

I didn't say when in season 5. But I do think she was in love with him. The back-half of the season.

Given the way Angel has been handled in the comics, I think I would prefer him dying to trying to get through that kind of arc, which would probably be written in a way that was completely rage-inducing. I think I could only accept that kind of ending if Joss wrote it himself.
Of course I would prefer if Joss would give Angel back to IDW, but that will never happen. 2nd choice is if he would get some of the IDW writers to help out, even if they were one-shots. But I'm not sure if that would even happen (I think there were hard feelings all around when he took back the license).

Yeah @Mr Pole I think you're way off base about S5. Up until 'Intervention' he was a nuisance, she found the bot incredibly creepy and only after he refused to turn Dawn over to Glory that she thanked him. That's only 5 episodes away from the finale. In the final episodes Buffy is entirely focused on saving Dawn so I don't even see where she'd have the time to be in love with him! What's more he even acknowledges her non-love: 'I know you'll never love me.... but you treat me like a man...'. People have made arguments in favour of it in S6 because of the complicated dynamic they have then and while I don't really agree, I see where they're coming from. But in S5 it just isn't there.

Well, I'd be pretty miffed too if my company spent all that time and money on a title/character, only for Joss to take it back and then proceed to destroy it in spectacular fashion!

But then he sat with her (after he came to kill her) and was there for her emotionally. He ratted out Riley for her. He drove them around hiding from Gloryhole. She trusted him. I think it's easy to say she loved him. Not necessarily in love with, mind you, as I don't think that ever happened as she died, but I certainly think she grew to love him that season.

But that's all about his motivation, not hers. He was in love with her at that point, so he helped the Scoobies.

Yes she trusted him because she could see that he would protect Dawn, but that doesn't automatically equate to love. In 'Tough Love' the two of them have that one scene in where she realises Dawn's run off to Glory, in 'Spiral' she's entirely preoccupied with Dawn, in 'Weight of the World' Buffy's catatonic, and then the more significant scene comes in the finale when she asks him to protect Dawn. So I don't how he can have registered in her thoughts all that much by then. She was very much in soldier-mode in those last few episodes.

I don't think she was in love with him in S5. She felt something for him, obviously or else he would have been dust, but I definitely wouldn't liken it to love. Kindred spirits, maybe?

I also feel, for me, that S6 ruined any build-up that S5 might have had. I just can't get past that.
