NO.1 - Spuffy. All day. Every day. Every minute. Every second.

Also Cangel but not because I don't value what Cordy and Angel meant to one another (which I absolutely DO NOT with my NO.1 choice) but more so as it has been said, Angel would face exactly the same problems he had with Buffy if he was to fall in love with Cordy as deeply as he had with Buffy which I don't believe he had got to that place yet as they never got the proper chance to go that deep with their feelings. I will accept that Angel had some major feelings of love for Cordy however I do not think they had develop to the point where they had him questioning if Buffy was the One.

Despite the unbalance writing, I still see them as a healthy friendship/relationship compare to the one I have rename 'Bike' (not trying to mean any offence to their fans) but if you have heard of the phrase 'on your bike' and know what it means then this is my OTT feelings toward that particular ship. It means I can be unreasonable and ridiculous in my MAJOR dislike for that vampire but it is what it is.

I never had a big problem with Riley. When I first watch him in the series, I wasn't keen but I never had much negative feelings towards him and view him now as someone that if Buffy was to settle down with then I'd be ok with it.

Scott was just a high school boy Buffy dated that was never about it being anything more than it was.

Nina is someone that I was glad that it happen for Angel plus she had become a supernatural being herself and Angel had supported her through that. And he got to get released some pent up emotions! 😘

Darla. I don't know how to truly articulate my conflicting feelings about Darla. I'm grateful she sired Liam who became Angelus who then became Angel because if she hadn't, Buffy wouldn't have met him!
I wasn't happy about her trying to kill Buffy but hey she a vampire and Buffy is the slayer so I can understand her wanting to get rid of Buffy not just for herself but also for the Master.
I was intrigued when they brought Darla back in ATS and ended up loving her arc on the show.
And then Darla's greatest and most selfless act with THAT scene that is one of my favourite in the entirety show. Brilliant.
I wouldn't call what Angel and Darla had a loving relationship because of the kind of vampires they were but there was an attachment and it became something unique and special to them when she was brought back as a human. Of course that all went to pot when she got sired by her 'granddaughter'!

Spuffy somewhat considering the shrine, sexbot, and the fact he just happened to have the chance when she was at a low point. Someone pointed out that the Buffy in Anne wouldn't want to shag a soulless demon.

Cangel because of the contrivance of it. It's a Bangel rip off. It was as if the writers weren't thinkin clearly in Season 3. It was explained before Season 3 that Angel can never get really close to someone. Fred and Lorne should've shut up. David and Charisma hardly have any chemistry. Also the reasons I've read above. It was like Angel was out on the rebound.

Scuffy because Scott Hope wasn't a prize. There was no chemistry.

Nangel because it wasn't necessary. Angel was hung up on Buffy.

I'm not a Bangel shipper (although I do like it a lot - there's things I appreciate about all of Buffy's relationships) but I thought I might as well answer.

For me, it was Cangel. Of course Scuffy and Nangel are forgettable and probably my least favourites by virtue of the fact I barely, if ever, think about them, but Cangel was the only main relationship on either show that I thought was just a total and utter train-wreck. Not only do the two actors lack any romantic chemistry of any kind but the bastardisation of Cordy's character, all that "Kyrumption!" nonsense, and the way they just aborted the relationship mid take off (along with that gross Connor nonsense) was pretty dire to watch.

Angel/Cordy had a great platonic relationship and I really wish they hadn't felt the need to try and add a romantic element to it. Especially when what most people enjoyed about Angel/Cordy was her snarky, no-nonsense approach with Angel which help ground him. It was a huge mistake to change the character into Saint!Cordy and Angel's biggest cheerleader who not only no longer grounded Angel but who actually spent most of the time puffing Angel's ego up, along with her own, as two big ol' champions destined to be together. I really resented how the series tried to shove it down our throats how amazingly heroic and self-sacrificing Cordelia was and how not only was this repeated ad nauseam by other characters but Cordy even talks about it herself ("Angel, there are no people like us"). It was pretty gag-worthy having Lorne talk about Cordy in "Waiting in the Wings" how what a bonafide Champion Cordy was and how she'd therefore be a perfect romantic partner for Angel. There was a real elitist element to Cangel that was totally undeserved (Angel and Cordy are heroes but they're not any better than those around them) and it really put me off the relationship. It was the polar opposite to how their friendship had been in Season 1-2 when Cordy would cut through Angel's bullsh*t through biting wit and sarcasm.

I also think the writing is terribly unconvincing and poor. Up until "Offspring" they're in what can safely be considered a platonic relationship (I think often fans try and read more into it but I see nothing that suggests greater feelings than the love of two very close friends) and then suddenly they have Fred tell us that they're perfect for each other because of "Kryumption!" *sigh* and suddenly Angel has feelings for Cordelia? Just like that? All tell and no show. I didn't buy it for a moment and I thought it was very average that they decided to initiate the ship by having a character literally just tell us that the two characters would be perfect for one another (again, because of some elitist - they're so champion-y - crap). After that, I thought it was painfully evident that the two characters liked romantic chemistry of any kind and sadly it became apparent quite quickly that Charisma Carpenter simply did not have the acting chops to pull off a dramatic, leading-lady and love interest role. Her delivery of the line "I'm in love! With Angel!" in "Tomorrow" is singlehandedly the worst bit of acting out of any episode, any actor/actress, of any season, of the Buffyverse ever. It was atrocious. Not to mention that the writing was just terrible.

And then they seemingly abort the relationship mid take off. Whedon admitted that Cangel was very unpopular with the majority of fans and I suspect that once they realised this and, honestly, once they realised that they wouldn't be able to rely on Charisma to carry such a storyline, they introduced the Cordy/Connor stuff which was beyond gross and let Angel/Cordy fall by the wayside (except for Angel's jealousy over his own son *yack*). And then Cordy's all but forgotten in Season 5 with Angel fixated once again on Buffy.

It was just a mess. The only time it worked for me at all was right at the end of "You're Welcome" but I vastly preferred them as really loving friends throughout that episode as well. It was just a weird, awkward, poorly-scripted car crash and my least favourite major relationship in the Buffyverse by far.

Their friendship was contrived for me.

I have a hard time choosing. Cangel and Spuffy. I think in the series Cangel bothered me more because it felt like a betrayal. Angel left her. And Spuffy didn’t have a true relationship in the series anyway.

In the future Spuffy seems like more of a threat - I mean Cordelia is dead - and I feel like there are more fans so I hear about it more and get annoyed by it more, lol. (I don’t do comics though so it’s really all theoretical for me.)

When I read this I laughed.

Scuffy. That wasn't the REAL ring. That ring meant something to Bangel. Stop it, Scott!
YOU ARE A PILE OF BLAH

And also Briley...for basically the same reasons

When she says "There are no people like us." in YW, I want to throw things at my TV. It really epitomizes much of what I truly dislike about that later seasons dynamic and the way its written.

Angel calls himself "a champion" sometimes

She was basically being an idiot there. She is so full of herself that it isn't even funny.

Yeah. So??? At least he doesn't act stuck up about it.

Oh I dunno. I love Angel but he definitely gets pompous and self-congratulatory about the Champion thing sometimes.

I hated the word "Champion", to be honest.

Yeah Spike uses it a lot in Angel season 5 too. It’s a weird way of describing themselves.
Well, you could say that Angel, like Buffy, can justify some/a little presumption about being a 'champion' hero-type because they (and they alone) were both chosen by higher powers. Buffy, because she is The Slayer and Angel because Whistler/being brought back from Hell/Doyle. They both get called special/a hero enough times by those around them.
If Cordelia was in any way chosen it was only so she could bring about the free-will-pocalypse. By S5 she should know that pride cometh before a fall.
Don't get me wrong I like Cordelia most of the time but her arrogance is never something that really goes away unfortunately.

I love Angel but he definitely gets pompous and self-congratulatory about the Champion thing sometimes.

True. But by the same turn he gets really down on himself when another 'contender' for chamionship shows up who might be better, like Groo in S3 or *chokes out laughter* Spike in S5.

I never thought Cordelia saying "there's no one like us" to be complimentary in any way.. I always thought she meant there's no one as screwed up as us or something.. and that the "us" included the whole of AI not just her and Angel.

Mind you I don't remember the episode/context that much.

CORDELIA (looks down) : Guess we missed our moment, huh?
ANGEL: Maybe we were meant to. Or maybe people like us just don't get to...have that.
CORDELIA: Angel, there are no people like us.

I think in context she seems to be saying that be epic-type of heroes don't get proper relationships and happy endings.
I mean, Fred, Gunn and Wes do get relationships of a type, sometimes with each (Virginia, Frunn, Lilah) and...come to think of it Cordelia got some of that as well, as late as S3...right before she ascended.
So I really don't know why she's lumping herself in with Angel. She had things before Cangel ever happened.

Maybe it's because I'm a multi-shipper but no ship bothers me because I'm a Bangel ... if that makes sense?

Like, the title of this thread seems to be asking which ship do you feel is an insult to/opposes Bangel/gets in the way of Bangel but, for me, not only are Buffy and Angel so canonly soulmates but other ships don't lessen that ship in any way. I can ship Angel with Darla and not feel like Angel/Darla lessens the impact, love or connection of Buffy/Angel at all. I can enjoy Season 4 Briley without feeling like Buffy is "betraying" her feelings for Angel.

When other ships bother me, it's because there's something annoying/problematic/unlikable about that ship as opposed to that ship being "competition" for Bangel. For example, I hate Spuffy because of the abusive nature of the ship, not because I feel that it's in competition with Bangel. I dislike Cangel because it feels inorganic and forced not because I feel that the ship is an insult to Bangel.

Does anyone else feel this way?

As the OP of this thread, and to clarify, the goal of this thread was to gain a better understanding for which ships B/A fans as a group, particularly, disfavored the most. Not which ones they hated the most because they threatened the B/A ship, necessarily. Although that may certainly be a perfectly valid reason some people dislike a ship. Just thought I'd throw in that clarification. Even if this was a thread I started a long while ago.
