I'll side with Spike on the condition that the astronauts have to be average human size. If they were Andre the giant, paul wight, shaq or brock lesnar sized they'd obviously beat a caveman. Cavemen have that primal rage and brute strength that most current humans lack. What say you, do you agree with angel or spike?

Brock Lesnar might have the size, but it doesn't stop him being a scared little boy, afraid to fight 'Taker. I'd rather have 'Taker/Triple H anyway, lol.

Cavemen win. End of story. It was proved in that ep when Fred lost the battle to Illyria. Astronauts might all the fancy weapons and gadgets, but at the end of the day, they are just men. Cavemen are primal, they had a rage in them that can't be compared to modern day man.

Cavemen, all the way.

Exactly!
Lyri said it REALLY well. Also though, I'd like to point out... in the episode Wesley asks "Do the astronauts have weapons?" and Angel and Spike say "no." Therefore, any argument that the astronauts would win because they have fancy weapons is null and void and simply not applicable.

That being said, I do think Lyri really hit the nail on the head with Fred dying. I feel like while that question was indeed comedic relief in the episode... it was also there to show the battle Fred was going to fight. And Fred dying and being taken over by Illyria... and the old... showed it doesn't matter how far we've come with scientific advancements... we're still just people. And if you legit think about the question at hand "cavemen vs astronauts" and the astronauts have no weapons... Cavemen win. Take out the bias of Angel vs Spike... and just think... if a barehanded astronaut came up against a barehanded caveman... the caveman would beat the astronaut silly. Just like Illyria did to Fred.

They dont need weapons. They have intellect. Just paint a fake background so the cavemen fall off a cliff. Done.

Cavemen aren't cartoon characters. They're human + crosses between monkeys and modern day humans.
I wonder what would be defined as a "Weapon". For example: the astronauts could unleash a virus on them that is easily cured today (or that most people have got at one point), but is fatal for people of that time. Would that be considered a weapon?

Also, the circumstances: would they both just be randomly put in a room together, or would they have time to plan?

Why do we assume that the cavemen have mutant brute strength. They are less evolved, but still human. Astronauts are in peak physical condition, incredibly intelligent, and likely were military trained in combat. I vote astronauts. There is no evidence that cavemen are any stronger or more clever than astronauts-and neither have weapons.

Astronauts also have to be quite strong in order to wear that really heavy spacesuit and air tank.

I still stand by what they show us in the show. All the science, modern thinking and modern equipment in the world couldn't save Fred. She believes cavemen, so that's what I believe, too.

And besides, cavemen had to outrun and fight against the dinosaurs. They have to be a LITTLE bit stronger than modern man.

I don't think that even they could fight against anything bigger than a pterodactyl... They probably just hid in caves and avoided the dinosaurs most of the time.

We aren't talking about your average "modern man" though. We are talking about an astronaut vs a caveman. Illyria was not a caveman. She was a god. God trumps astronaut and caveman, obviously. But that's not the question. The diet alone of an astronaut is more conducive to optimum fitness than a potentially starving caveman who may or may not have been able to catch what he needed to fuel his body on the morning of the fight.

I think people fail to see the blatantly obvious! They would not fight. It's like why doesnt polar bear eat the penguin. All spaceman would have to do is light a match and caveman would bow down and worship him.

Good point!

Haha! Yes! Astronaut wins again by avoiding the fight entirely.

On the subject of astronauts being more physically fit. James actually said that after playing Buzz Aldrin where he had to do the daily training schedule astronauts do... astronauts are in REALLY good shape. But that doesn't beat the animal instinct of the cavemen. And honestly, a cavemen would have to be better at fighting because he would do it more. I mean how often would an astronaut get in a fist fight?

So... seeing how I was the only one to solve said problem.. I must really be a space cadet!

Despite fighting often, there probably wouldn't be much technique involved. Good technique can make a world of difference.

Why are cavemen getting into fist fights a lot? They most likely only expended energy when absolutely necessary to hunt or gather...which was more gathering than hunting most of the time. They were nomads...not animals.

Well, they were more primal. They weren't anywhere near as developed, which means that they didn't really think. They would probably fight as any animal would: fight for male/sexual domination, fight for food, fight to survive... Kill or be killed.

Humans ARE animals, and back then, they probably acted like it.

What evidence do you have to that? From what I remember of our studies of early nomadic culture (cavemen), constant human on human fighting wasn't part of every day life. Walking, gathering, some hunting...yes. Hyena style fist fights over food that they likely had to work together as a tribe to get were more of an exception. Having more people to help hunt or gather would have been an asset not a reason to fight.

So, yes humans are animals so cavemen AND astronauts are animals. But that doesn't mean that one is naturally more aggressive than the other. Cavemen still had frontal lobes and higher brain functioning, they just had less access to resources or the luxury of time to appreciate the pursuit of knowledge.

Doesn't seem like there's a huge amount of proof for either side.
