Astronauts vs. Cavemen

Why are cavemen getting into fist fights a lot? They most likely only expended energy when absolutely necessary to hunt or gather...which was more gathering than hunting most of the time. They were nomads...not animals.

Plus they gotsta run away from dinosaurs and what not.. so I think their cardio may be just as good as the astronaut .

Since we live in fantasy land where dinosaurs and cavemen were around together...

Hey if its fred flinstone vs buzz lightyear, I'm going with buzz.

And Sco, don't you know they rode the dinosaurs!? They were pets.

What do you mean by this? Are you suggesting that man and dinosaur were not around the same time? Contrary to popular belief you have no proof they were not, whereas we actually do have proof they did.

Perhaps I really zoned out during cultural anthropology and biology.

Maybe you are promoting an AGENDA.. I will educate you in PM then to keep it off the boards.
I think people fail to see the blatantly obvious! They would not fight. It's like why doesnt polar bear eat the penguin. All spaceman would have to do is light a match and caveman would bow down and worship him.

So, if polar bears migrated to Antarctica, do you think the penguins would worship them?

LMAO!
Oh my god, this thread is full of hilarious posts! Lyri...

And besides, cavemen had to outrun and fight against the dinosaurs. They have to be a LITTLE bit stronger than modern man.

I have no idea if you were joking, but... Dinosaurs lived from 250 to 65 million years ago. Cavemen evolved less than four million years ago, wayyyy after dinosaurs were extinct.

As for the OP, I would go with cavemen, simply because they would rely on their animal instinct much more than an astronaut would. And considering no weapons would be involved... 🙂

Go cavemen Go!

Yes, it was a joke, lol

See, now you are just being ridiculous. Seriously. Of course not. Polar bears have no opposable thumbs, they cannot light a match.

What helpful parts of "animal instinct" is everyone so sure would be helpful in a fight?

Are we talking fight/flight response, because last time I checked, we didn't evolve our way out of that one... We are talking hand to hand combat between a potentially malnourished nomad and a well fed, physically fit Astronaut!!! I don't see how that would even be a fair fight!

Hold on a second: Are we talking about cartoon style caveman (ie Flintsones) or real cavemen? Because, if we're talking about real cavemen - as in, the first humans and other hominids, such as Homo Erectus, Homo Habilis, Australopithecus, etc. - then they would definitely NOT have fought against dinosaurs. Dinosaurs were extinct 70 million years ago, and the oldest hominid fossils are only about 3.1 million years old. The mammals that outlived the dinosaurs (the ones that we descend from, if you believe in evolution) were most likely small rodents.

Sorry to burst anyone's bubble, but no, cavemen did not live with dinosaurs. I also happen to think astronauts would win. If they don't get weapons, then the cavemen don't either (clubs, rocks, etc). In that case, the superior training the astronauts have, and their higher intelligence would lead them to be able to adapt to this situation better.

My husband's argument, contrary to my own assertion, was that the caveman would win. He said that the caveman would win, not because of animal instinct blah blah blah, but because in a negative pressure, zero gravity environment one's muscles atrophy and the resulting lack of strength would render the caveman physically stronger in his opinion. Booo. I hate when he makes logical arguments I can't refute.

((I'm sticking to Sco's "the astronaut pulls out a lighter and the caveman worships him" scenario btw))

These are American astronauts we are talking about, not blokes from space. The question was astronaut and caveman, not caveman and little green men (or big black obelisks)

Wow I didn't think this topic would spur this much debate. Since Chimpanzees could dominate in a fight with a human that's not monster sized, I'm still sticking with cave men as they are closer to Chimps than modern man. Especially if what they meant as cavemen were neanderthals.

But an astronaut isn't just some normal, mundane human. They're highly intelligent, highly trained, highly capable humans that are in incredible shape.

True but Chimpanzee would rip through any astronauts based on brute strength. On skeletal structure alone the muscle attachments suggest a super muscular compact specimen. As best scientists can tell they could crush rocks with their hands.

Intelligence is great but it doesn't mean you're good in a fight. And being trained as an astronaut isn't like being trained as a fighter. They're not soldiers. Their physical training is more like keeping in shape than learning to kick and punch... Astronauts are not trained fighters.

You said what I was going to say lol. (I'm gonna still say it though!)
Cavemen, no doubt.

But an astronaut isn't just some normal, mundane human. They're highly intelligent

Just want to respond to this part. When I was in school, I saw plenty of very intelligent people get beaten up quite often. I don't think intelligence factors into this at all.

I think intelligence completely plays into it. The "rules" never say they actually have to get into a fist fight. It just says "vs". The astronauts would analyze their way to a win.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the question when Spike and Angel ask Wesley is "who would win in a fight, astronauts or cavemen?" So yes, the "rules" do say that.

But not a fist fight. A fight could be verbal or (in other cases) a weapon to weapon thing. A fight could be whoever dies first, whatever means work.
