Bangel Fan Fiction Rec Thread

Man that would have been quite the confusing and loaded speech.

Kiss.
Angel: I guess that means you are happy to see me. I have a kid. I fell in love with Cordelia. Why are you boinking Spike? Shoulder to shoulder i'm yours. (Even though I just told you I was in love with Cordelia?)
Buffy: What are you 12? I'm cookie dough.
Angel: Ever thought about who might enjoy cookies?
Buffy: Didn't you just say you loved Cordelia?

I call bull on that. I could see him telling her about Connor but to find a way to fit in a conversation about the complicated nature of the relationship with Cordelia (a relationship that never even got off the ground) I find it hard to believe that Joss would ever sign on to that. And then add to that the fact that I don't think Angel was in love with Cordelia but you know that is a conversation for a different day I suppose. 😉

This is going to drive me insane. BTW. I want to get a source for this! I'm going to make it a thread.

Bear in mind the wiki also gives Liam a failed romance at age 18 with a Sarah Gilfried (supposedly taken from that sketch and illegible writing in Halloween) 😵, so the chances that this is also pure BS are very high.

I threw it on a thread lets see if any veterans have any insight!

No, you can actually read the book (try it on your computer instead of on a TV--the HD version makes it even crisper with more on the sides of the prop). Except it says, "Sarah Goodfr--d" (it's almost readable, though part of the last name isn't). It's not the wiki, but the actual episode where Liam had some sort of relationship with her when he was 18. Angel's own dialog supports it when he comments on noblewomen and girls he knew at the time. That is, if you look past the Watchers' Diaries being notoriously unreliable about dating (Liam was born in 1727, not 1753!). And then there's the fact that her dress is so ridiculously not 18th century (is that a corset and bustle I see?--certainly not chest-flattening stays).

Buffy props in general are absolutely horrible if you try to read them (modern shows are more HD ready). This one is the same in terms of a whole lot of nonsense on the page, though there seems to be something about St. Vincent's Eve and a witchcraft curse. My favorites are the Beatles lyrics in Marcie's assassination textbook, Andrew Borba's newspaper clipping turning into an article on recycling and Wesley's book on astral projection being a Latin text on 12th century Spanish kings. I get a lot of laughs out of reading the props.

Surprisingly, a lot of effort went into Russell Winters' computer searches (dates with all of his Jane Doe victims and their descriptions) and Nathan Reed's computer schedule actually matching the correct month for when Darla became pregnant with Connor. The computer records for the blind assassin Vanessa Brewer match what is said in the episode, too.

Five die in van accident
By Sandra Sorzano
Sunnydale Press Reporter
In a tragic accident yesterday, four adults and one child were killed.
This accident has led people to believe...
Fugitive Andrew Borba
Among the dead was Andrew Borba, whom the police sought for questioning in a double murder.
The driver lost control of his vehicle and slammed into a pole.
Services for the deceased will be held at Sunnydale Funeral Home.
Each count with which the ex-wife is charged represents a required visit that didn't occur. She said her husband was outside the house trying to get the girls to talk to him and allow him to take them to his home.
While he amended the compromise into a bill that would have required a minimum of five cent refundable deposit, the assembly and the senate will be the first time buyers. In brief the compromise calls for the creation of state-regulated recycling programs for all aluminum, glass and plastic containers."

I can definitely call bullpucky on the thing about Cordy being mentioned in the April 3, 2003 white draft of Joss' Chosen script. I have the script right here.

@NileQT87 you're right, I'd forgotten that you can read it and actually I have tried to make sense of it before, so I should have said 'not understandable' rather than illegible.

Funnily enough when I first watched the episode I thought it was Drusilla (couldn't read the name on TV then), because the face looked kind of bumpy. Of course that didn't make sense. The dialogue of the episode does point to some sort of connection but the whole thing is IMO too vague to be stated with the certainty it is on the wiki page. For starters there's the fact that the annotations seem to have nothing whatsoever to do with the drawing.

If Liam was 18 when he met her she would have had to have been a girl in the village or someone who came to the village. Judging by her name, which does not sound Irish, it would more likely be the latter. She would have had to have left Galway at some point (possibly soon after, her name being English sounding, she may not have been particularly welcome in the village. Also if she'd stayed Angelus would have definitely killed her!) and a decade later been tracked down by a Watcher who was gathering information on Angelus. But if the diary entry itself is dated 1775 (or lets imagine 1745, to go with Liam's actual date of birth), then it makes no sense for a Watcher to be hanging around making notes on Liam at the age of 18! Unless, the date refers to the year the event/meeting/relationship took place, like if the Watcher was writing out a timeline.

However the dialogue still works without the failed romance thing ever having been true anyway - Buffy sees a picture in the diaries dated to around that time with no descriptions of who the girl is, and being a teen in love she wonders if Angel liked that sort of girl. So she dresses up as one. Angel then later tells her he in fact hated those kinds of girls.

I think originally Angel was supposed to be younger when he was turned, around 19 or so (to make the human age difference between him and Buffy less icky). But they eventually realized that DB would age and making Liam so young would never fly after a few years. Now unless I'm wrong, but it wasn't until AtS that his birth date was changed and Angel/Liam was made older. Or do I remember that wrong?

If so that would validate my other previous theory that the girl was supposed to be one of his early victims.

I don't want to hijack the Insert Scene thread with fic recommendations, since that's not what it's really about, but I thought I'd put them here, in case that thread is whetting anyone else's appetite!

If you want a scene with Angel in The Pack: A Vampire in Love by @Taaroko
If you want more Buffy with feral Angel: Damnation's Castaway Awakening by @Kairos

And @dcai0830, I would like the one that you talked about on the meetup after Buffy returns from the dead, please.

Someone said my name.
I remember reading quite a bit of 'Angel back from Hell' stories. There were one or two that were done well. And then there were those that would have him mount Buffy like an animal (consenual sex though), which is just so wrong.

Yeah, I've seen those too. But Kairos' take is intelligent and moving.

Ok I found it, a little off on my characterization it seems that sex was had, but Angel didn't....well just read it. LOL.

Its a larger fic and the meeting portion is about 2/3rds way down. The fic is rather explicit its Chrislee. If you want to jump to the meeting search "divulge very personal information" it will get you to the section right before she talks about the meeting.

Thank you!
I don't read very much fic – partly because I'm very picky and partly because I can't find the time! However, I found this in my livejournal memories, so I figured I'd share: "and every breath we drew was (hallelujah)" It's a quick read and I think it added depth to some scenes. 🙂

Thank you for posting this fic! I read it so long ago and had lost it. It’s so well written and @Grace it also has a Season 6 meet up.

Sometimes the best written fics are the saddest. I both love and hate the ending of this fic if that make sense?

My favorite quote: “So what are you now? A man who was a monster or a monster who tries to be a man?”

Ha, @Kairos! Glad to know that works on multiple forums.

The writing of this one is soooo gorgeous. I wish I could write like that. But I agree with you that I both hate and love the ending.

@Mylie - Here is a fic that is absolutely heart wrenching Post Gift. The beginning has some good Angel/Willow stuff. It's Ducks so its a little over the top in some parts but I remember the first part of it felt very honest to how that might have played out with Angel/Willow. It also has some really wonderful Dawn/Angel. 🙂

Stages of Grief - Chapter 1 - Ducks - Angel: the Series [Archive of Our Own]

OMG, thank you!!

You don't know how much I've been wanting Angel/Dawn interactions and before s10, all I had was Angelus talking to her on the phone (without every seeing or hearing Dawn). I love that this fic has both relationships. Hopefully, it'll be a satisfying read.

I should be able to start it tonight and it's only 5 chapters so it probably won't take too long!

I was crying ugly tears the first time I read it so be warned!
Ok so I've read the first chapter of Stages of Grief and I'm having a bit of a hard time with the style and the voices of the characters but I love that the author cares about the little moments and the thoughts process of how Angel is dealing with his grief.

My favorite part was actually at the end... when Willow told Angel that she wouldn't be the person she is today if it wasn't for Buffy and that felt like such a nice parallel between them. I think both characters's paths were significantly altered by knowing Buffy. I know this could be said of other characters but Giles would still have been a watcher (just a different slayer) and while I do think that Xander's life was also altered, it's not like a big part of his identity changed with knowing Buffy. Angel found his reason for living and became a hero, Willow became a witch and decided to use her powers to save the world because she was inspired by Buffy. I guess there's also Cordelia who's life was drastically changed but she wasn't that close to Buffy. So that part really got to me and it's seriously making me bitter we only got a handful of Angel/Willow moments post btvs s3.

Also, reading all of Angel's thoughts about how he's never going to see Buffy again, etc., I keep thinking about Fredless and how he must have felt that moment he got the call from Willow. So I guess I'm not that invested in the story so far but there are a lot of little elements that are making me think more about specific aspects of the show and the characters, etc. and I love that!! I'm so not used to reading fanfics so I wonder if this is something that happens with every fic?

I'm so not used to reading fanfics so I wonder if this is something that happens with every fic?

Its rare that I find a fanfiction that is so spot on where all the characters ring 100% true. Each fanfiction writer has an style and perspective so to speak and some of them are more up front with their themes. Ducks has a very particular way of writing, which is why I mentioned its a bit "over the top." I think she loves the characters a great deal (as you said) and her love for Bangel is so apparent in her writing but she turns it up to a 14 when it should probably be at a 10? She is big into the vampiric stuff like mating etc and makes Angel more alpha that he is in real life, which I'm not into. And this fic specifically, I will tell you I hate the ending - alot, I feel if she would have ended it right before the ending she crafted, it would have horribly sad, but better. If you decide to move forward and read the rest then you'll know what I mean. So when I read a fic written by Ducks I kinda know what I'm going to get and I settle in for that kind of fic. But what I think this fic does well is I think she captures Angel's grief so well and I like that she goes through the stages of grief and I find that extremely moving. I don't like her Spike/Angel stuff.

By the way, I don't mean this to be any disrespect to Ducks. She has some of my favorite Bangel fiction out there - seriously her Something Old 4.5 is a personal favorite even if has wild OOC for some of the supporting cast haha! But she definitely has a very unique style and I have to be in the mood to read that.

I would be remiss not to mention another fic that does a wonderful job with the Buffy death story but it's LONG so it may be one for you to keep in your back pocket for a rainy and lazy day of crying. And that is: Show Chapter | Archive of Our Own

@dcai0830 I'm sorry to say that I can't finish Stages of Grief. I'm having too many issues with the writing. It's too over the top and "romantic" for my taste. It wouldn't be a big deal if I didn't cringe at every sentence but it's just not a pleasant read for me. And stuff like :

I forgot to breathe and just stood, gaping at her.

and

There was nothing all all left inside of me that could be called life.

bother me too much... he's dead!!! he doesn't breathe and he's not "alive".

Anyways, I really wanted to enjoy it as I loved the concept and was excited about Angel/Dawn but I might be too picky.
