Bangel FanFiction Pet Peeves

@dcai0830 I haven't actually, what kind of story is it? You made me curious 😉

It’s one of the best fan fictions in the buffyverse. I’m driving around so hard for me to link it but if you go to the close your eyes forum we had a fan review in it and the link is there. It’s a future fic Buffy dies in the Gift and then is revived hundreds of years in the future by the Watcher’s counsel. And guess who is still alive?

If you read any fic read that One!

You're going to make me addicted to fan fiction again XD

No problem, and I will :)
I just read a fic that made me remember of this thread and I realized I never posted mine. So here it goes...

Fics that erase Dawn from the verse. If the fic is written pre-season 5 or it's an AU where events made it so that Dawn couldn't have existed then I obviously don't mind. If the story is set during s5-6-7, and post show and there's absolutely no reason not to have her existence/presence acknowledged (other than not liking the character and not wanting to write her in), then I'm kind of annoyed.

Other usual pet peeves :
-Buffy appearing as a damsel in distress just so that Angel can save her
-Angel talking too much about his feelings (it doesn't feel in character to me so it takes me out of the story)
-Angel growling when he's aroused.

I'm okay with the claddagh rings meaning they're married. One, it's the primary use of claddagh rings. Two, the writers got the idea from DB & his wife who had them. Three, marriage/weddings in the current form hasn't been around that long and in many places a simple ring exchange with the same design & consummation with the bride losing her virginity that night to the groom would've been binding. Four, the ring was placed on Buffy's marriage ring finger. Five, having Angel & Buffy wear matching rings that mean they belong to each other right before consummation screams wedding & honeymoon. Six, Angel can't do anything legally since Liam died in 1753. Seven, Angel had a dream of a modern wedding to Buffy 15 months later so it must have been on his mind.

I'm okay with some endearments. Buffy did call Angel "honey" a few times and once said "For the Prom, silly" so she is okay with it a bit. Angelus once (when no one could hear him) called Buffy "my love."

Angel talking too much about his feelings (it doesn't feel in character to me so it takes me out of the story)

Where would you say it goes over the line for you? Like, one conversation is OK, but not in every scene kind of thing? (I agree with this peeve and I'm trying to assess where it gets to be too much...)

It's hard to say but it can even happen within 1 conversation for me.

I think Angel says a lot with very few words and him being cryptic guy and kind of reserved, he'll open up only if he really has to. I also think he's someone who really takes the time to pick the right words so I appreciate when he doesn't have too much dialogue because what he says is then extremely meaningful.

I'm also not into big declarations of love in general so of course that's also a factor.

I think something that tends to work well is if the conversation is split 2/3 Buffy and 1/3 Angel.

The only example of a scene where Angel talks plenty and that works for me is the one in Earshot. I think what worked there is that it was the kind of conversation that could have gone on and on but it didn't? There was a lot to unpack there but they went with a certain economy of words. Like this is what he replied when Buffy asked him how he felt kissing Faith and pretending to have no soul : "I hated hurting you, more than I could stand.". He goes right to the point.

So I guess I can't really explain it. I know if it goes over the line when I read it... Sorry, I'm really not helpful lol

No, that's very helpful, thanks!
Question for all you B/A fic readers.... What length do you prefer for fics? Do you like longer stories or do you prefer the shorter ones? I'm gearing up to try my hand at a longer story (maybe 30-40K) and I'm wondering if there's an appetite for it or not. (I'll write it either way, but it's good to keep expectations in check.) There haven't been many long, multi-chapter Bangel fics for awhile and maybe people aren't into them much anymore? I noticed the fics over 10,000 words for this year's IWRY Marathon did not seem among the most popular (though of course that could be the particular stories weren't as good, mine included ... but one of my favorite stories by another writer was among them, so I don't know).

I like long ones, but then I'll only start reading long ones if they are already complete, too many heartbreaks at getting into a long one only for it never to be finished.

I tend to prefer small ones because I very rarely find long ones that I love. But one of my favorite fics is a very long fic so it all depends on how it's done.

I hadn't thought about it before but I'd say I prefer multi-chapter fics as I get much more invested in those kind of stories, though with that being said, I'm more likely to read the shorter fics because they're, well, shorter. You're right though there haven't been many multi-chapter Bangel fics lately which is interesting because that seems to be the opposite trend for other fandoms I read fic for. Anyway, on the whole, I find longer fics tend to be more gratifying.

Um...what's happening here? Why is Cordy_Chase in a Bangel fanfic thread?
Relax, I'm not here to vandalize. I don't do ship wars.

The title intrigued me and it just so happens there is an element of neutrality here.

For all of you (the two or three of you that come in here and read this section of the forum 😛) that read Bangel Fan Fiction - what are some of your pet peeves that you encounter in Bangel stories? I'll tell you mine below!

Bangel Fan Fiction Pet Peeves:

1. When Angel and Buffy call each other "baby" or "beloved" it is so out of character, I could never see either of them doing that repeatedly. Maybe once in a while I could see a honey slipping in from time to time but we saw them together for 3 years and they never did have pet names for themselves.
2. When Angel is possessive and wants to "mark" Buffy or any type of overly Alpha/vampiric behavior of which Angel has never shown any interest in EVER.
3. When the fan fiction diminishes the other relationships that Buffy and Angel had to the point of inconsequence or when the fan fiction paints Cordy or Riley as these horrible insufferable people who are mean so that you can root for Angel and Buffy to be together. I don't think you need to tear any other characters down to root for Angel/Buffy. Their love is enough to do that all on its own.
4. Angel as the great protector, rescuing Buffy who is for some reason helpless. Buffy is a bad ass, I'm ok with her needing help from time to time but I don't like the idea of Angel coming in and rescuing her. She is no damsel in distress. You can leave that for the Cangel fics thank you very much.

These elements are staples in Cangel fanfiction as well. So I thought it valid for me to put in my two cents.
These are inaccurate but so is Buffy and Angel remaining together after BtvS season 3 and a ton of other ships portrayed (Angel/Cordelia, Buffy/Faith, Connor/Dawn, Wesley/Gunn etc and yeah those last two have featured in Cangel fics I've read, they exist).

Perspectives and ideals shape fiction, a director's, a screenwriter's, an author's and what is left untold or underdeveloped tend to shape a fan's.
Fanfiction can be about filling in gaps in the canon:

Ex. Angel wanting to bite during sex.
We never get a detailed picture of what Angel is like in bed but he is a vampire so authors tend to go to popular vampire tropes even those which are not addressed in the canon.
There might also be a sex appeal element here. Biting and claiming/mating apart from fitting with the animalistic nature of a vampire are also erotic gestures that represent ultimate fidelity. Not that the latter should be taken seriously, vampires aren't supposed to be moral and even Angel can't always fight his instincts but it can still make for quality fiction.

Another Ex. Cordelia's parents.
We learn basically nothing about them outside of the IRS bust thus authors still look at that and the vague hints given with Cordelia's character; her spoilt behavior, that her family is wealthy and thus the stereotypical rich type personality and even the absence of proof of their existences (meaning we never either see or hear about them) prior to the IRS bust vs. the Scoobies parents and come up with plausible guesses.

It, however, can also be about re-imaging the canon to our ideals or placing the characters we want to see in an entirely different situation, environment, concept or all of the above.
Such as one, quite brilliant Cangel fanfic I've read that places the characters and concepts of AtS into the basic plot outline of Beauty and the Beast.

When we read fanfiction we are seeing not Joss's vision but a fan's which can account for other characters/ships presented antagonistically to favor/validate the ship of focus. Can be unnecessary? Absolutely, especially when taken to a certain level but it can also be a necessity to provide substance to the perspective the author wants to instill if done right, with eloquence.
I've seen Cangel authors do this plausibly and tastefully and make a strong statement with it (ex. a healthy relationship vs an unhealthy one).

Bottom line is that the point of fanfiction isn't always to be faithful to or support the canon. It's to express ourselves and cater to perspectives the canon did not satisfy.

Fun fact: I've read Cangel fanfics that respect and paint Bangel and Cander in a good light and as still friends who care for each other.

I fully appreciate that fanfiction need not be faithful to Canon. However, this thread is about our personal pet peeves in fiction. So these are things that I, personally as a reader, often encounter and that I don't care for. Also, with many of these it's not a matter if inaccuracy for me, it's a matter of failing to capture characterization. As a matter of example, I think portraying Angel as this animalistic possessive man who views women (Buffy) as his mate and property is wholly inconsistent with Angel's character in Canon. And yes I know it can be hot and erotic for smut... But, again to me, I go into these stories to read more about my favorite characters not to read about some Anne Rice trope vamp that looks like Angel.

I don't think a Cangel fic portraying Angel & Buffy as friends despite him choosing to be with Cordelia after having left Buffy while they were still in love & wanting to be together is a positive. That's not everyone getting along, it is like Angel's dream in Awakening when Connor stepped aside and was happy that his lover/girlfriend chose to be with his dad instead of him.

My pet peeves in B/A fics:
* Anything that features Faith post Who Are You. Its like having a LoVe (Logan & Veronica) fic that has everyone besties with Cassidy post finding out he raped Veronica when she was unconscious.
* Buffy finding out Angel pursued other women and being all "You had to live your life, we weren't together" even though him leaving her because of his immortality & the happiness clause are why they weren't together so it's her being understanding that he gave other women everything he denied her.
* Buffy just taking Angel back and picking up where they left off without him proving himself (which is basically Spuffy in the comics, faked his death for 2 years while screwing other women and she just takes him back).

I dont read any Angel / Buffy fics , certainly no Spike / Buffy Fics , as I do not believe either one was good for Buffy , but still have annoying things like Watcher mine or as before Buffy cursing........I also do not like Buffy pairing up with characters outside of the shows doe's that make me weird ?

Sorry, the only reason that people didn't curse on TV was that TV did not allow it. Some of the situations were swear-worthy. (we even see them allude to it on Willow's part once). And Spike gave the entire audience the finger (in the British manner) in the CREDITS.

And we really should look up our cockney rhyming slang. Ponce and Berk have interesting (and not nice) antecedents. GILES uses words that are quite naughty. A lot of it they get away with because the censors probably have no clue.

I don't believe that Buffy would 'carpet swear' but I do believe that given the right situation, she'd swear as would all of the others, even perhaps Joyce... a vampire exploded in front of her, for goodness sake.

-------

No, Buffy would not be in love with or willingly sleep with Angelus. I could see him punishing her with rape -- because how awful it would be to have the monster wearing your lovers's face violate you... but i don't want to read it.
Sadly, I have inadvertently stumbled into fics that went that way.

Angelus was all about breaking people by violating social norms in horrible ways (the vile stalking and finally turning of Dru, where she's unknowingly confessing to Angelus who was draining the priest), so i can see Angelus obsessed with and working hard to destroy Buffy precisely because Buffy loved his alter ego and made Angel love her.

Well, if you don't want her with people outside the show, and don't want her with Angel or Spike, then that leaves who? Xander or Riley... or some other minor show character? Wood? Hmmm. Not sure about weird, but poor Buffy sounds kinda lonely...
