Bangels only: Do you see chemistry in Spuffy?

This is something that took me forever to realize. Because I'm usually so focused on Buffy in that scene. It took me a while to connect the dots from the flashback of his first ensouling to that scene. That it takes a while to access those memories, probably because it's all jumbled at first. And then the scene became even sadder for me. He has no idea what's going on but he sees that Buffy is distressed and he wants to comfort her because that's Angel. And then she stabs him and he goes to hell, having no idea why. Ouch.

I agree that that's what it looked like, but there seems to be a continuity issue here: when Angel was ensouled by the original gypsy spell, he remembered all the things he had done as Angelus and it took a few minutes to remember a century's worth of evil. It appears he has no idea of what is going on but Willow used the identical spell on him and there were only a few things for him to remember so it should have taken less time.

But none of this has anything to do with the subject matter which is whether Bangels see any chemistry between Spike and Buffy.

I don't see it that way. I liken it to being knocked out. When you come to, it takes a while for you to realize/remember where you are and what happened. This is similar to me. The soul comes back and it takes time to make sense of the memories. I think it's all a big jumble.

This is the one ensoulment where we did not see the light show coming out of the eyes and mouth of the vampire as we saw with Spike and with Angelus in Ats. Maybe it only happens under certain circumstances. Come to think of it, I don't recall it in the original gypsy curse, so this may be just another continuity error.

Erm, slight correction there. In the flashback in Becoming and then in the scene with Buffy, the eyes glowed yellow/orange. The only reason it was so visual in Orpheus was because it was taking place inside his head, if you will. But the light effect was always there.

I think the time difference is probably because originally he has the gypsy man telling him that he's going to remember what he's done whereas with Willow's spell, he comes to and immediately notices Buffy in front of him and is focused on her completely.

DB's acting in IOHEFY was great because not only did he have to play Angelus, but he had to play Angelus possessed by a female ghost. His Season 1 acting was a little stiff, however, considering the writers didn't really know what to do with Angel in Season 1, it's not like DB had a lot to go on in how to portray the character, he was kind of winging it. Once Angel had an actual direction (Season 2) then there was a vast improvement in DB acting because he knew how to portray the character.

His acting definitely wasn't great from S1, both because he was inexperienced and as @DeadlyDuo says there was nothing much for him to work with. I think even DB said in an interview somewhere that he was constantly anxious about whether he was doing it right in those early days. There's definitely a step up though when you get to S1's 'Angel', because he finally has a fleshed out character to play. He's still a bit green even then, for example there's this face.I have no idea why he has that expression. It's like he's forgotten he's on camera or has no awareness of his facial muscles or something...however, the other scenes in the episode are pretty good. There are a lot of times in the first season where his voice is also off, he speaks in a sort of accented drawl, something closer to his own voice rather than the deep low tones of Angel we get the following season. Again I put it down to lack of direction and character.

I do also think that SMG does carry the scenes a bit more than he does. Not completely mind you - it's probably 60/40 - but that's mainly because we are experiencing the relationship through her side; it's always told from her point of view. If they'd devoted as much time to Angel's experience as they do to Spike, or maybe even Riley, then it would have come up to 50-50.

One of my favorite bits of acting from DB is that little shoulder kiss during the hug.
I love that too. He does often throw in those tiny extra actions, sometimes it's just a glance or a smirk but it is there, it's just easy to miss.

Sometimes his stoicness (as in, not begging desperately or being a blubbering mess) is because he's trying to comfort and protect, but you can still see his reactions very much at the same time. He often has an imploring expression or a regretful one.
His stoicism is great. DB can do a wonderful blank/deadpan face and again you have to watch for subtle eye movements or gestures. One of my favourite moments is in AYNOHYEB where Judy tells him 'I'm nothing' and you can see that moment of recognition and compassion emerge in his eyes even though his face stays almost completely motionless. I think criticism of his broodiness or blankness is ultimately just down to a matter of taste. It is difficult to make an intensely stoic character interesting while remaining true to his nature and some people just aren't into it.

He's not monotonous. If he were monotonous, he wouldn't have the soft, sweet voice, the mockingly sarcastic voice and the threatening, angry voice.

I've just been watching S1 of Bones (i.e. when the show was actually good ) and you can really see how DB has developed into a solid actor. In 'Man on Death Row' for example he switches modes expertly and has some great subtleties in his eye movements and body language. Of course by then he and Emily Deschanel were working with an acting coach - I dunno if he had one during ATS - but it's still great to watch him improve consistently. One thing I have noticed from watching him is that DB's acting is much better when he's restricted and not allowed to bring too much of himself into it. Ironically the restriction helps him stretch his range. Once he's allowed to bring in his personality more he gets too comfortable and the character veers into dorkiness. You see it in AtS a little bit, and it's most apparent when you compare the early and later seasons of Bones (though that's also down to the writing becoming increasingly nonsensical)

I see chemistry (frenemies, romantic, sexual) in almost all of their scenes but there are a few that it's just not there but the shippers think it is because they have feels over those moments.

In Afterlife, during the "every night I save you" speech, it's not there. He's emoting and filled with guilt and affection for her but when the camera pans to Buffy, she looks what she feels---empty, dead inside, missing a part of herself, soulless, wrong. The difference between them was one of the points of the scene but I keep seeing shippers say "Just kiss already! She's already falling for him!" The point of the scene was what she says to him later in the episode, "I can be alone with you here." It wasn't connection.

In Touched, when they're sleeping in that bed looking at each other. I kept thinking, "Buffy, go to sleep!" She clearly needed it. She spent so much time by herself then suddenly her house has dozens of people in it. Even her bedroom wasn't just hers anymore. She was running on almost no sleep or food and needed a month to be able to just nurture herself. She looked ready to pass out.
