Okay, I don't know if this has been mentioned before, but Buffy really does have a thing for sharp objects!

Becoming Pt. 1 & 2 were amazing, classic episodes! Although, now that I've re-watched the latter more than a few times, I always wonder why exactly was it necessary for Buffy to stab Angel through with her sword? Every time I see the scene now, I LOL secretly to myself (even when nobody is around hehe). Didn't the portal just need Angel, or his blood? Buffy wasn't bleeding via "The Gift", and Angel was already cut at his palm, and Buffy sliced his arm right before his soul was restored. Couldn't she just have, you know, pushed him in? Acathla's portal was right there!

I know it was all to make the scene more dramatic, but does anybody have any other theories? Maybe Buffy just reacted on instinct (scary!), or it way her was to "release" after the grueling weeks dealing with Angel/Angelus. What do you guys think? I'm thinking: poor Angel! 😛

I never really thought about it that way to be honest. I kind of assumed that he needed to be 'joined' with Acathla for it to work. I don't think it would have been very nice for her to push him through either...

Hrmm, I'm looking forward to hearing some good fanwank here!

Oh that's right, is it Whistler that gives it to Buffy because it was the sword that stopped Acathla last time?

To stop the portal the sword had to be deposited back in the statue, just pushing Angel in wouldn't have done it.

But the sword that was actually removed from dormant Acathla was being used by Angel, and Buffy disarmed him! The sword that he was stabbed with (and that was sucked into the portal still lodged in his chest), was the one Kendra gave Buffy. That sword was the one used by a knight that first "slew the demon". But wait, then if that was the sword that sent Acathla to his dormant state - then what sword was the one that was IN Acathla and removed by Angel? Weird.

Huh... Yeah, I'm mightily confused right now... I haven't seen Becoming in aaaages so that's not helping my confusion!
My bad, you're right. It was the sword (somebody?) gave her. I still think stabbing him was necessary, he opened Acathla, the sword was the key to stopping Acathla, there is a certain logic to running him through with it.

Before Buffy set off to kill Angel/Angelus, she was given a sword from Kendra. It was supposedly the sword used by a knight that first slew Acathla, and most likely sent him into his dormant state.

Then that doesn't add up, because there was already a sword lodged in Acathla that was keeping him dormant. And Angelus removed it and sparred with Buffy. She eventually disarmed Angelus, and then proceeded to stab him with the sword that was given to her by Kendra. That doesn't add up with the theory that the original sword needed to close the portal WITH Angel.

Was it Whistler? Okay, now I HAVE to rewatch it again. 😛

Kendra gave Buffy her lucky stake, Mr Pointy (which is why she was unarmed when Dru and her minions showed up) Her sword came from Whistles.
I just rewatched the essential parts, I think it was just for dramatic effect. Yeah, she could've have pushed him in, but that would've looked rather silly wouldn't it?

Couldn't she just have, you know, pushed him in? Acathla's portal was right there!

1. Swords are awesome ;P
2. Perhaps she didn't want to get too close? Pushing him in would have put her right up and personal. Maybe she was afraid of falling in herself?
If somebody pushes you, you automatically reach out for something to hold on to - Angel might've had done that, even if he didn't really want her to go into the portal.

Or maybe, being the Slayer, reaching for her weapon was purely instinct on her behalf?

Truth is I've never really thought about it. 🙂

I like option number 2! I'm going to stick with that! Or the slayer instinct, reach for your weapon thing.
I thought it was because a) the sword had to be put back into Acathala and b) Giles said it needed Angelus' blood.

One possible reason why Buffy stabbed Angel with the sword, aside from its dramatic effect, was to provide him with something that could give him at least a fighting chance for survival wherever she was sending him. The sword couldn't possibly kill him unless she beheaded him with it. If she had just given it to him, he might have dropped it in transit. Having the sword embedded in Angel's chest was the one certain way that Buffy had of assuring that sword and vampire wound up in the same hell dimension.

Whistler: Acathla opens his big mouth, creates a vortex. Then only Angel's blood will close it. One blow will send 'em both back to Hell.

Pretty straightforward, don't you think?

ITA. I think we're making too big of a deal about this. But then again, don't we always and what fun would it be if we stopped? ;)

Good point. Never thought about it, but if that's the case, that was very noble from her.

No, Kendra gave Buffy the sword.

WILLOW: I don't wanna be our only hope! Uh, I crumble under pressure! Let's have another hope.
KENDRA: We have.
She pulls a sword from her bag.
KENDRA: Blessed by the knight who first slew the demon. If all else fails, this might stop it. ...I think.

Anyway, yeah. I think she had to run Angel through with the sword into Acathla to keep him dormant.

IMO she did it that way to make it quick and easy. Plus if Angel had realized what she was doing it may make it harder for both. I never really thought about it lol until now.

Do you think that if he known, Angel would've chosen it? Like Buffy in The Gift.

Most definitely I have a lot of faith in Angel at that point and think he would do what had to be done. Would it have been hard? Of course but Angel is a champion and sometimes they have to do these things.

(sorry for bumping this thread)

Maybe it needed Angel`s blood INSIDE of the statue. Not just smered on the outside. If this is the case, I don`t see her having any other options.

Off-topic:

It`s kinda the same as in The Gift, isn`t it. Why did Buffy feel like she had to actually jump in to the light? It only needed a few drops of Dawns blood to open. Wouldn`t it have been enough for Buffy to just cut herself and share a few drops of her blood to end that light thingy? Or did I miss something...?

But anyways, both SUPER EPIC scenes in tv history! 😉
