Being Human...

Orignal UK version or US?

I'm watching the original, which is absolutely brilliant. The first episode of S3 was incredible, I really loved the way they dealt with the aftermath of the train attack, and the scene where Mitchell admits he shouldn't be forgiven was very powerful, nice character development. Lacey Turner was surprisingly excellent as Lia, I hope we see more of her. (Actually, Lia reminds me somewhat of a superior Eve - a mysterious, flirtatious young woman with a link to some higher powers, but Lia is much less nasal and irritating). The revelation of Mitchell's future is very interesting.

Those closing scenes with Annie reuniting with Mitchell, and then George and Nina, were just wonderfully heartwarming. Great to see the OT3 together once again. And of course, the Annie/Mitchell shipper in me was very happy with the direction they seem to be taking those two in.

If you're talking about the US version, I haven't seen it, but as it's an American remake of a high-quality UK show, I'm going to assume it's vastly inferior to the original.

Completely agree! I loved the opening epsiode of this series, and thought the trip into Mitchell's past/the revelation about his future was excellent.

Also, I'm totally shipping Mitchell/Annie right now.

Did anyone else catch the Spike-a-like vamp? Curious, especially after seeing this from Toby Whithouse (the creator):

Buffy The Vampire Slayer
& Angel

"It's one of the great myths about me. I have never in my life watched an episode of Buffy or Angel. Not in terms of hating it, I just never got round to it. I'd love to see them. Everyone says they're great. I've not seen Firefly either, I saw the film but never the series. Don't look at me like that."

But how could this have been anything but an homage to Spike?

If you're talking about the US version, I haven't seen it, but as it's an American remake of a high-quality UK show, I'm going to assume it's vastly inferior to the original.

I'm gonna go with that assumption too, LOL. But I'm pretty curious. I might download it and see how it compares.

I'm watching the US version and LOVING it. I have heard great things about the original, but didn't want to start watching a show 3 seasons in. Plus, as I've said over in the discussion on After Darkness, I loved Sam Witwer on "Smallville", so I was anxious to see him in this. so far he's not disappointing me.
I love all the characters. Aiden is super-sexy and charming, Josh is goofy (a little too goofy at times) but adorable, and I absolutely love Sally and feel sorry for her.

It's kind of off topic, but honestly, what is it with American doing US remakes of everything? Skins US, Being Human US, L.O.L. US (it's a french movie that had success one or two years ago).
I'm pretty sure I've heard of other cases where some serie/movie was remade US-like. I just don't get why, it's like disrespectful of the culture :/

WOW, snobby much?? Don't bash til you give something a chance.

How is it disrespectful? It's been done all over the world for years... Someone likes an idea someone else has and takes it to put their own spin on it. It happens ALL the time with the music industry, and in the movie business.
From everything I've read and heard, the US version of "Being Human" is only based on the original. The concept is there, but already the episodes have been pretty different according to a few of my friends who watch the original. So what's the big freakin' deal?

I watched the US pilot last week. I thought it was really interesting. I'll be checking back. In toronto, they had a little talkshow after and the actors were on and discussed what was in store for the show. It all sounded like something I would be into. A friend has been trying to get me to watch the UK version, but now I think I'll just stick with this!

I think I'm mostly against most remakes generally speaking. It's like with Buffy, I don't like that someone wants to touch something great to make a remake of it. As for the series and movies, I hear too many times things like "It was such a success that an American remake might come to day". Wether it's American or not, I just don't like the idea of re-using the receipt of something that has worked. If it's a remake like 20, 30, 40 years later it surely can be interesting with the technologic progress, but too soon is not good enough, in my opinion. In general, to me, a remake is a way to say "We are going to do the same, but better". As for remaking british stuff or french stuff in a american remake, why not sticking to the original? I find it rather disrepectful because it's really saying "Let's make it better than it was". I'm not sure if you see my point, but to me, too-early remakes are a way to bring down the original.

I agree with all of this. I'm not fond of remakes in general, and it's even more irritating when there's a foreign movie I really like and then I find out there's going to be an American remake of it! I probably feel this way, because I just don't see the point of remakes because I don't think the originals need to be improved.

Anyway, I'm not going to debate or argue with anyone about this, because this thread is about the show Being Human.

And about Being Human, I've never seen the show before but I know it has vampires and werewolves in it. I also heard it's very good on After-Darkness, and I'm kind of interesting in seeing it.

I'm fan of the UK original Being Human. But I haven't watched the US version of the show.

Besides I like UK Mitchell a lot.

I don't agree because it's not about thinking they can do it better. Our culture is a LOT different than British culture, so the reason for remaking it is so we can understand the pop culture references and things. For instance, when I was in high school before I knew anyone from the UK, I would watch "Absolutely Fabulous" on my local PBS channel and I would laugh but a lot of the time I had absolutely no idea what they were talking about. If someone would have taken that concept and made an American version, I would have fell in love 'cause I would have been able to understand it a lot better.
A lot of people over here don't know what a loo is, and if you asked someone for biscuits, you're going to get fluffy breakfast food, not sweet cookies. See what I mean??

And if a show is already a hit success, why would you re-do it? It would be like looking at 'Sunflowers' and thinking "hmm, that's a nice picture... therefore we should paint our own version of it!" The chances of it being anywhere near as good are astronomically low.

I just hate the whole culture of television executives treating viewers like morons, assuming that they won't be able to comprehend a show if it contains slightly different accents and slang. British viewers managed just fine with American shows, why wouldn't American viewers?

WOW, snobby much?? Don't bash til you give something a chance.

After seeing what you guys did to Coupling, I can't help but have that gut reaction.

But how could this have been anything but an homage to Spike?

I thought that very same thing when I first saw him, but my sister, an Angel viewer, thought I was crazy. I think they were going for a Johnny Rotten look with him, so he just has similar origins to Spike.

But isn't that kind of advocating 'dumbing down'? When we get US shows, there are sometimes things I don't understand, pop culture references etc. and if I'm that fussed to find out what they mean, I'll go google it.

I don't know about other people but it's just frustrating when there's a wonderful, wonderful TV show, and it's remade by another country, then the original gets overlooked and the 'new' fans won't give it a chance. 🙁 I heard they're remaking Primeval in the US, too. :/

I love what RTD is doing with Torchwood. Not remaking it but collaborating with a US network. I can't wait for that. 😀

I see your point about a show being a success, I really do. However, as I've stated before, this show is not a frame by frame remake of the original, from everything I've heard and read. I haven't watched the original, but several people on After Darkness noted key differences in the characters and plot from the very start, so it's obvious that this show is BASED ON the UK version, and not a total remake.

As far as judging the show based on your experience with 1 show's remake, that's definitely a bit predjudicial. But whatever. No one's holding a gun to your head saying you have to watch it; there's no need to bash it just because you assume it's inferior to the original.

Our culture is a LOT different than British culture...

American culture is as different to British culture as British culture is to American culture. Yet British audiences embrace Friends, Scrubs, The Simpsons, etc - why is it that we can cope with that gap yet American audiences apparently can't?

Sometimes a pop culture reference pops up that I don't fully get, but you know what? I shrug, and move on to the rest of the episode. As for the slang, well British audiences are well aware of the American words for lift, spanner, film, trousers and wardrobe. People aren't stupid, we learn quickly and we can very easily adjust to minor differences in speech.

I don't know... Maybe American audiences just feel more comfortable watching characters they find relatable in some way. It's really stupid, but when Americans meet someone with a British accent, a lot of the time we automatically think of royalty, so it leaves us kinda in awe a little bit. We wouldn't watch a show with a British person and think "That could be my next door neighbor" or something like that.

I'll admit, that is preferable to a xerox of the original script with American accents. But it still seems a little pointless to try and re-make a show using the same concept - there's already a show with that concept, why not just use that? Hell, it'll be cheaper for the network if anything.

I didn't mention the utterly lifeless Skins xerox, or what happened to Life on Mars (it's a metaphor!) It's not one show,

But whatever. No one's holding a gun to your head saying you have to watch it; there's no need to bash it just because you assume it's inferior to the original.

If you read my original point, you'll see that I was never bashing it, I simply assumed that it was inferior to the original.

Ok so why don't you get a job with one of the major networks here then and tell them to start airing British shows instead of trying to give people jobs by creating new shows or doing their own spin on an existing show? It's not that simple... But that IS why there are channels such as BBC America that air these shows for people who are interested in watching them.

Assuming something is inferior to the original before you even watch it is rediculous though. Do I believe that the Buffy reboot will be inferior to the original show? Yes, I do, but I'm willing to give it a chance before I make a final judgement. My reason for not wanting a reboot is because I love the characters from our BtVS, and none of them other than Buffy are going to be in the new one... But that's beside the point.

I'm saying exactly the same thing as you. I believe that the Being Human remake will be inferior to the original. The only difference here is that I don't care enough to make the time to try out the American version. Hey, maybe I'm wrong, and the American version will be the greatest thing ever written, but to be honest I don't really care either way. It was just a throwaway comment, a vague guess born out of apathy.

Chill your beans, brah.
