Best Episodes to Define Buffy

Ok, my friends have organised this thing where we each bring seasons from our favourite tv show and show each other episodes...I chose Buffy and i need about 3-5 episodes to show them to make them realise that my show is the best 🙂

So what do you guys think..i need suggestions on what to show them and they've only seen about 2 or three episodes each 😀

Oh if you're interested they chose, How I Met Your Mother, Scrubs and some Ouran High School Host Club or something to that effect...not really sure.

Scrubs is great, and How I Met Your Mother is okay. Never heard of the other one.

As for Buffy, hmmm, I think if you're going to show 3-5 episodes, you shouldn't necessarily chose the absolute best of the series because they're all better in context. I'd suggest picking a good run of episodes, a spot where there are three to five decent ones in a row so your friends will get caught up in the serial nature of the show and need to continue.

If it was me I would episodes that have both stand alone qualities but also the element of OMG! Things that would make you want to come back and see what happens, to see this girl's story. For me I would pick...

Angel, I Only Have Eyes for You, Enemies, Fool for Love and Him.

I think these episodes showcase Buffy's strongest qualities at a glance (the humour and heart that is the crux of the show). At the same time it shows progression, opens stories up to you (like Angel) but doesn't give everything away...basically getting them interested and then pulling them in for more.

Anne is another great episode for that too. Just for "I'm Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and you are" alone.
 
With 3-5 episodes I would show them a story-arch! Well, not whole one, but part of it, and then they might really want to see the rest 😀
Actually, I think a good place to start is OMWF. It's a fun, refreshing episode basically everybody likes, it really introduces the Spuffy relationship (which most people also seem to like...see my Usertitle for any Bangel comments 😉) an from there on some great storylines start. The next episode in order would then be Tabula Rasa, which is very funny, and since everyone has by that point already seen OMWF they will be acquainted to the characters a little, so it won't seem completely weirdish. One episode later you then have Spuffy really taking off (you know, with the whole bringing down buildings and everything), plus also a storyline that can really get you hooked in the way of you just want to see how it goes on (the Spuffy and the whole Willow magic thing).
So yeah, that's what I would do (and partly already did (sw))

I deffo think you should bring up Hush, or normal again, because they are just classic and 1st Class episodes!
 
They're all female...all age 16...all intellegent (except one who's got the mental age of a 3 year old)....all straight...Does that help??

Yes it does.

I recommend Surprise/Innocence followed by Passion then Becoming Pts 1 and 2.

If teenage girls don't get the emotion Buffy is feeling in the two 2-parters and don't get cut up by Angels at his most evil inbetween, there is no hope!

This will either have them longing to watch ALL Buffy and Angel or it means they will never like the show!

Plus it also has Seth Green in who they, undoubtedly will recognise so you can be all 'yeah, he is so great in this'.

True...it's a bit of an emotional rollercoaster, those 5 eps.

Still though...it is must see tv.

Perfect for the 16 year olds.

IF it had been any other age group and sex/mixed, then it would be a different story, but this group, in my opinion, is the group that will talk to them the most and thus give the entertainment they desire!
 
If you want to get them to get hooked, you should definitely give them part of an arch to watch. And no matter how well Cangels plan worked with me, I think you should start with some earlier episodes, one of the reasons being that they won't get spoilered too much. I can imagine Bangel being a good one to attract a bunch of 16 year olds, because it is relatively 'easy', and more like your usual romance. There won't be much explaining needed, whereas with Spuffy, well, it's more complicated.

And, therefore, I agree with EB, that the Surprise/Innocence, Passion, and the Becomings would be a good one. If you don't want to show them a seasons finale, I think you should still aim at some of s2. It might actually work even better to not show the Becomings, and pick like Phases, I only have eyes, Bewitched Bothered and Bewildered (for example) instead, leaving them wondering if Angel will get his soul back and so on. Plus, added bonus for s2, you have Spike and Dru! 😀
 
I definately agree with what been said as far as the Angel centric buffy episodes, great for luring young girls...wait..that sounds wrong. But seriously, Surprise and Innocence will go well (although the 'surprise' wont be too effective if they dont even know Angel), but the rollercoaster you'll go through on those episodes should be pretty sweet. The only downside I have is that they are S2, so 11 years old and although not really 'dated', there is an element of 'dated' to them...but Im not sure thats enough to make them any less brilliant.

You know your friends best so you can probably judge what your friends would like best... In the same way I would show a mix like Anne, The Gift, Fool for love, Something blue, CWDP etc...cause I know watching any one of those single episodes would immediately have me buy the entire box set if watched without any other episode. Just remember that everyones different though, plenty of people out there will just never get Buffy, and I kinda like it that way...its ours to cherish. 🙂
 
Yeah, I really like the idea of showing them Surprise, Innocence, Passion, and Becoming pt. 1 & 2. They're pretty much guaranteed to be a hit amongst at least semi-intelligent teenage girls.

Another good one to start with would be Hush. It's brilliant and accessible (although it may require a quick little description of the characters), and, once you're finished with it and you have their attention, you can have them watch a larger arc (like the aforementioned Angelus arc.)
 
Lover's Walk, The Gift. And how big of a Scrubs fan is the one who choose Scrubs? If they're a big one, make them watch Ted. John Ritter(Who played Ted) was also in Scrubs(He was JD's dad) so they might find that cool ^^
 
There was similar discussion of this on another board where a guy had made a deal with his girlfriend that if she sat and watched 6 episodes of Buffy then he'd watch Friends with her so he wanted 6 episodes to get her hooked.

The same sort of episodes came up. I agree with EB that you will lure them with the Buffy/Angel arc. To solve the problems that may be posed by them not knowing who Angel is, you could kick it off with 'Angel' and then go through 'Surprise/Innocence' etc?

I definitely think you should start with earlier episodes, I think its easier on new viewers. Saying that, you watched season six first didn't you?! So I may be wrong 😀

The only reason I would argue against Angel in this group is that Passion is a great bridge between Surprise and Becoming and the whole Surprise/Becoming double episodes actually top and tail the Bangel relationship (even though it doesn't really chronologically) AND why the Surprise/Becoming episodes really work is that its a fantastic introduction to Spike/Dru and the Spike/Angelus relationship.
