So we all have our favourite characters on the show, but are they consistently your favourite, or do they change?
By Season, name the character you loved the most and the character you destested the most. You can gives reasons as to why if you want to or not.
The character doesn't have to be in the title credits but does need to appear more than one episode (so yes to say, Mr. Trick, but no to Holden Webster, etc).
If you want you can have two characters share top and bottom spot- 'cause that's what I've done.
I'll start:

BUFFY: SEASON 1: Best Character: Buffy (She sure made a great first impression!)
Worst Character: Darla (I just like her a lot more on Angel- she's more consistent/interesting)

SEASON 2: Best Character: Xander/Angelus (Xander for the comedy, Angelus for the evil.)
Worst Character: Kendra (the worst character crime- boring.)

SEASON 3: Best Character: Faith (from 'Bad Girls' onwards she steals the show), Oz all the other times.
Worst Character: Xander for the first half.(Dead Mans Party/Revelations!/ Cheating on Cordelia), Cordelia (but only after she 'reverts to form' in the second half- disappionting 🙁)

SEASON 4: Best Character: Willow (I think she really shines in this Season, and she grows the most.)
Worst Character: Forrest/Adam (one's annoying, the others dull, next!)

SEASON 5: Best Character: Buffy/Giles (they're both at their best here, she confides in him and he, in turn, supports her. 🙂)
Worst Character: Riley (turned from nice/boring into a needy a-hole, shame.)

SEASON 6: Best Character: *tumbleweed*....um, ah, ooh Tara. Tara easily. This is her season. I love her here. 🙂
Worst Character: So. Many. Choices. Okay, Spike- by a fair margin.

SEASON 7: Best Character: Dawn, surprisingly. She's not annoying anymore and has developed nicely by this point, (as a character, jeez people.) until Faith shows up that is. 🙂 (The way Faith grows here, she should've gotten her own spin-off, or shown up on Angel)
Worst Character: Well, Andrew can be funny, and Kennedy is supposed to be annoying...so Wood. Completely pointless character.

ANGEL: SEASON 1: Best Character: Doyle (I'm a sucker for his Irish charms, and he goes out on a high.)
Worst Character:...Tough one. But I'm not a big fan of comedy prat-fall Wesley, actually no, David Nabbitt! Two episodes. (What was the point of him!)

SEASON 2: Best Character: Angel (has real range here, comedy and then going all dark, then comedy again.)
Worst Character: Not much choice...Grue (He was in more than 1 ep and I never really liked him.)

SEASON 3: Best Character: Wesley (beats Holtz by a nose, but his turning into the dark, lonely guy is utterly compelling.)
Worst Character: Linwood (Poor man's Holland Manners.)

SEASON 4: Best Character: Again Wesley and then Faith for three episodes. (Are you seeing a pattern here. 🙂)
Worst Character: Cordelia: Going evil I can forgive (hell, I dig that in a character), phoning in your performance- boo!

SEASON 5: Best Character: Angel/Illyria: Angel for most of it. Conflicted and then determined to go all out- love it. Illyria mainly because of all her dialogue. (Plus, I kinda dig her outfit.)
Worst Character: Eve/Knox: Even though Knox created Illyria I still hate him with the passion of a thousand fiery suns. Eve...meh, just didn't like her at all. Lindsey could do better.

Season 1
Best: Buffy

Season 4
Best: Willow
Worst: Forrest - endless annoying.
Season 5
Best: Willow
Worst: Spike - no competition, gross and creepy full on stalker, who only gets worse from here on.
Season 6
Best: Willow
Worst: Spike

Best: Willow

Season Four
Best: Buffy/Riley
Worst:Spike

Season Five
Best: Buffy / Minions

Best: Buffy / Faith (Again, I don't think there's a best but these are the two I care most about)
Worst: Spike / Kennedy / Scoobies

Hmn, I think your list might be better than mine. *pout*
S1
Best: Buff's incredible in season 1. It's the little things, you know, being super protective of her friends, killing humans and not giving a shit, watching Bollywood flicks, going on a date with somebody actually her age. Her heart, her humor, her strength - she's awesome.
Worst: Angel. Seriously, what purpose does Angel serve in season 1? He's a special-vampire/half-assed love interest with not much else going on - I mean, his internal conflict fails to survive a single episode. Lame.

S2
Best: Spike, bitches! I said it, no competition here. Spike in season 2 is a rock star un-living the bloody dream. Booze, blood, violence and a whole lot of sex - yeah, that's Spike. He shows up and basically 1-ups every vampire so far, Darla's a dual-wielding undead pistolero in a school-girl outfit and Spike's still better! Jesus Christ.
Worst: Jenny Calendar's pretty obnoxious.

S3
Best: No character particularly stands out in my opinion.
Worst: Faith. Hey, Buffy needs her own evil twin! Faith's a plot device disguised as a shallow character.

S4
Best: Willow. Willow is the first major gay character on the television, like her or not, she's absolutely ground-breaking. Pile a pile of character development on the top of that and really, this is no contest.
Worst: The Initiative. I know, it's not a character but still, we're talking here combined lameness of Maggie, Forrest and Graham.

S5
Best: Glory kicks ass. She's a god and she acts like one. What else can you ask for?
Worst: Spike. He's pathetic. He's worse than Bono, OK?

S6
Best: Willow. She's a Jesus. She's the ultimate evil. She's a hero. She's a monster. A lover. An abuser. Good. Evil. Plus. Minus, you know? Willow's duality trumps that of any vampire in this franchise. And guess what, she defeats and humiliates Buffy in her own series and gets away with it. Is that cool or what?!
Worst: The Trio. Rehashed stereotypes with no personalities. 'Nuff said.

S7
Best: Xander. No, really. Season 7 is when Xander becomes truly at peace with himself and with who he is. No other BtVS character does that. A culmination of seven years worth of character development. This is how you do it.
Worst: Buffy. Like, what's this bitch's problem anyway? Seriously, season 7 Buff's so full of shit she could clog the freaking hell mouth with it.

Great thread idea!

BTVS:

Season 1:
Best: Buffy. She carries the early parts of the show, really easy to identify with. Love her in S1.
Worst: The Anointed One. I'm surprised no one has said him yet. He sucks. He's boring. He's useless.

Season 2:
Best: Angelus. He completely turns the series on its head, and is far and away the best villain Buffy has ever had. I love that whole arc from start to finish.
Worst: Jenny Calender. She's entertaining at first, and I liked her dynamic with Giles, but her cowardice leads to so many problems, it just bugs me.

Season 3:
Best: Buffy. I thought about Faith, but her entire purpose at this point is to further Buffy's arc, which she succeeds at. Buffy is awesome this season. Oz is a strong contender as well.
Worst: Xander. He's a jealous little punk with no self-confidence in S3 ("The Zeppo" notwithstanding, where he was awesome).

Season 4:
Best: Spike. Seriously, in a very mediocre season, he carries the whole entertainment load. There are a ton of episodes where he's the only entertaining part. Too many.
Worst: Adam. Just a horrendously boring and poorly contrived big bad. The Initiative storyline as a whole is kind of representative of everything lacking in Adam.

Season 5:
Best: Glory. Fresh and awesome big bad.
Worst: Tara. She's just way, way too passive. I just don't like her as a character this season.

Season 6:
Best: Buffy. She's interesting this season at least, even if she makes zero sense a lot of the time. But then again, almost nothing about S6 makes sense.
Worst: Willow. Hey kids, Willow is addicted to magic. Did you hear me!? ADDICTED! TO MAGIC! First magic was about growing up, then about liberation and finding yourself, but now it's ADDICTION!!! And in case you didn't get that, we're going to make it as loud and as obnoxiously unsubtle as we can (and then change the metaphor again when we get bored)...ADDICTION!

God I hate that storyline. It killed Willow as a character.

Season 7:
Best: Dawn. For the most part, Dawn is super chill this season. She really grows from where she was in prior years and improves the balance of the series.
Worst: Buffy. She's arrogant to a fault, and even worse, she's just wrong 99 percent of the time.

AtS:

Season 1:
Best: Doyle. Loved Doyle. He had the best-friend schtick down to a science.
Worst: Gunn. He really grew on me later, but he's annoying at the beginning.

Season 2:
Best: Angel. I loved Angel this season.
Worst: Again, don't really have one.

Season 3:
Best: Wesley. His dark turn is amazing.
Worst: Connor. Starts out awesome and then just gets whiny.

Season 4:
Best: Angel or Wesley.
Worst: Connor. So damn annoying this season.

Season 5:
Best: Angel/Spike. Both are great, and they play off one another brilliantly. Spike really adds to the cast and has great chemistry with just about everyone. Angel's overall arc is five-star.
Worst: No one, really. I love S5, all the way through.

It's very hard to only pick one lol Can I add a runner-up spot?

Season 1
Best: Buffy
Runner-up: Giles
Worst: The annoying one...

Season 2
Best: Buffy
Runner-up: Oz
Worst: Kendra

Season 3
Best: Faith
Runner-up:Buffy
Worst: Xander (ugh, what he did to Cordy really annoyed me, aside from that I like him)

Season 4
Best: Willow
Runner-up: Tara (only because of lack of screen time)
Worst: Forrest

Season 5
Best: Tara
Runner-up: Buffy
Worst: Riley

Season 6
Best: Tara
Runner-up: Willow
Worst: Warren

Season 7
Best: Dawn
Runner-up: Spike
Worst: Andrew (it annoyed me that he killed someone, and then went on to be a part of the gang, which resulted in less screen time of people I actually wanted to see).

Season 1
Best: Doyle
Runner-up: Kate
Worst: Can't really think of anyone

Season 2
Best: Angel
Runner-up: Kate
Worst: Can't really think of anyone

Season 3
Best: Wesley
Runner-up: Fred
Worst: Connor

Season 4:
Best: Wesley
Runner-up: Faith (even if it was short lived, I just loved her story)
Worst: Connor

Season 5:
Best: Wesley
Runner-up: Spike
Worst: Knox

Great idea!

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER
Season 1
-Best: Buffy (She was the main focus here, her character developed slowly but smoothly)

-Worst: Jessie (Uninteresting, he was felt like Xander but it was clear from the beginning that there was only space for one. Also, bad acting)

Season 2
-Best: Cordelia (From the beginning when she confronted Buffy in ''When She Was Bad'' I liked her more, she felt more part of the gang and I also liked her strange relationship with Xander)

-2nd Best: Buffy (Loved her self empowerment)

-Worst: Kendra (She started off badly and when you might start to care just a little tiny bit about her, she dies.)

Season 3
-Best: Cordelia (Come on... she frickin staked her first vamp! Wicked moment. I like how she grows out of the Scooby gang this time because of what happens with Xander, as nice as it was to see her with them it was always obvious that it wasn't her place)

-2nd Best: Buffy & Faith as ONE (Loved the whole thing, especially when these two were like partners)

-Worst: Xander(Don't get me started lol)

Season 4
-Best: Willow (Not my favorite season for characters but Willow definitely shined the most as she blossomed into a more confident person)

-Worst: Parker & Kathy (Thankfully small parts but I can't stand them)

Season 5
-Best: Buffy (Buffy turns into such a mature and beautiful role-model. I simply love her in this season)

-2nd Best: Glory (Glory was fantastic)

-Worst: Riley (because...)

Season 6
-Best: Buffy: (I love her ''nothing matters'' attitude, this life is just a dream, an experience and she already went through it. It was definitely interesting seeing her coping with life again and in the end accepting and being grateful for it.)

-Worst: Buffy & Spike as ONE (Separately they are great in their own ways, together they just aren't the same as they were. I don't like where they go as a couple/partners)

Season 7
-Best: Dawn: (Nothing special but she definitely matured)

-2nd Best: Buffy: (Too many expectations on Buffy, she sacrificed everything *her life included* and a bunch of little potential trolls invade her house, she got betrayed by Giles, hell-mouth opening and all this crap... She messed up at times, but didn't stop her from getting back up, when the ''house-mates'' aggressively threw her out of her own house, she let them be.)

-Worst: Caleb/Housemates (Enough said)
___
ANGEL
Season 1
-Best: Cordelia: (Still the one we know from Sunnydale, it was very interesting to see a new side of her and interact with Angel)

-Worst: Gunn: (Nothing special here, but that all changes further on)

Season 2
-Best: Cordelia: (She keeps growing on you; also, ''Disharmony'' was hilarious)

-Worst: Fred: (Very unstable, which is very understandable! I mean, who wouldn't be unstable after spending years in that place. Fred definitely becomes a more interesting part of the gang)

Season 3
-Best: Cordelia: (The Vision Thing, Billy, Birthday, Tomorrow and all of them! Can't get enough of Cordy)

-Worst: Connor: (It's understandable where this teenage boy is coming from, doesn't make him less unbearable)

Season 4
-Best: Wesley & Faith (Seriously, that's the only good thing about the whole season, these two together. Loved Angel in the beginning of the series, loved Fred being independent which showed her strong side but nothing else stands out this rubbish season)

-Worst Jasmin (For f'ing up Cordelia... bitch)

Season 5
-Best: Cordelia: (You're Welcome, enough said)

-Worst: Eve: (Blank canvas)

This is tough for some seasons. Here goes.

Buffy
Season 1
Best: Buffy
Worst: The Anointed One

Season 2
Best: Angelus
2nd is Oz, I love him and his affection for Willow
Worst: Snyder

Season 3
Best: Faith
Worst: Xander

Season 4
Best: Spike, I think he's hilarious
Worst: Forrest

Season 5
Best: Giles back to being watcher like, and he kills Ben
Worst: Riley

Season 6
Best: Tara, I really like her this season, so sad.
Worst: Warren

Season 7
Best: Dawn, I really enjoy her character this season
Worst: Kennedy, I was so happy when Faith told her back off

Angle
Season 1
Best: Angel
Worst: Lee, he was annoying

Season 2
Best: Darla
Worst: Gunn, never really liked him

Season 3
Best: Lorne
Worst: Connor

Season 4:
Best: Wesley, he helps Angel and doesn't expect anything in return
Worst: Connor and Cordelia, them together is just ick and wrong

Season 5:
Best: Fred/Illyria I was so sad Fred died but really liked Illyria
Worst: Eve, hated her from the beginning

BTVS Season One
Best: Buffy, Willow, Cordy
Worst: Darla, The Anointed One

BTVS Season Two
Best: Angelus, Oz, Spike
Worst: Xander, Jenny Calendar

BTVS Season Three
Best: Faith, Angel, Willow
Worst: Xander, Joyce

BTVS Season Four
Best: Riley
Worst:Spike, The Trio

BTVS Season Five
Best: Giles
Worst: Willow

BTVS Season Six
Best: Buffy
Worst: Spike, Willow

BTVS Season Seven
Best: Faith
Worst: Spike, Kennedy, Scoobies, Giles

Season 1:
Best: Buffy/Giles- The whole saving the world thing comes together and I just love Giles.
Worst: The freaking child Anointed One. He's pointless and a HORRIBLE child actor.

Season 2:
Best: Angel/Angelus- I love him. Absolutely love him, even when he's evil.
Worst: Drusilla- Weird, kinda annoying and just plain creepy

Season 3:
Best: Angel/Willow
Worst: Xander

Season 4:
Best: Willow- I love her through out the series but she is fantastic in this season.
Worst: Riley- So dull, so safe, so not that interesting.

Season 5:
Best: Giles- cuz he's a bad ass
Worst: Dawn- Words cannot communicate how much I hate Dawn with a passion. She whines, she just freaking shows up at the beginning of season 5, then she whines some more, pouts, does stupid shit and pouts some more.

Season 6:
Best: Spike- There is a place in my heart for him.
Worst: Dawn- Hands down. Worst character ever.

I haven't finished watching season 6 yet, so I'm not going to do season 7.

Buffy

Season 1:
Best: Giles and Buffy
Worst: anointed one

Season 2:
Best: Willow and Angelus
Worst: Kendra then Oz (see season 3)

Season 3:
Best: Willow and Giles
Worst: Oz (most of the time in s2 & s3 Oz doesn't say much and is just kind of there and off to the side. For most of s2 & s3 he isn't memorable to me, other than with Willow, but even then, he doesn't ever seem to have much to say or do. I've only seen BtVs one time through but I struggle to remember details about Oz's contribution other than him being mostly a wallflower. No one stands out as bad to me in s3 so Oz is it by default.)

Season 4:
Best: Willow again and then Spike
Worst: Parker, Forrest, Maggie, Graham. Also Tara (I agree with others that she was far too meek and passive this season to like much, at least for my tastes.)

Season 5:
Best: Glory (Best big bad in the series to me) and Dawn (she's a great character: her arc is really compelling to me, she's displays interesting and diverse emotional ranges that feel realistic for who she is, and MT has several performances in a few episodes that are some of the best performances in the Buffy-verse. I can't say enough about Dawn/MT in most of S5).
Worst: Riley

Season 6:
Best: Tara and Willow actually.
Worst: The trio.

Season 7:
Best: Dawn (although all of her truly special moments are behind her in s5, she's feels like the most balanced of the scoobies in this season) and Spike.
Worst: Kennedy

Angel

Season 1
Best: Doyle and Angel

Season 2
Best: Angel and Lilah

Season 3
Best: Wesley far ahead then Lorne and Lilah

Season 4
Best: Wesley
Worst: Cordy

By the way, this is my 100th post on this forum!

Season 2
Best: Spike, Angelus and Giles.

Angel Season 5
Best: Angel, Spike, Wesley, Illyria.
Worst: Harmony.

Great thread idea. I read all the previous responses after writing mine so as not to color my own opinions. Here are mine:

BTVS:

S1
Best: Buffy.
No contest. It's her show, and she owns it.
Worst: The Anointed One. Better to remember as little as possible about this character.

S2
Best: Angelus.
Best. Big Bad. Ever. (Buffy is a very close runner-up. I know this isn't her taking-on-adult-responsibilities-like-paying-bills season, but man does she grow up a lot this season.)
Worst: Kendra. Introducing a second slayer had massive storytelling potential, and they wasted every ounce with this dull dud and the worst accent in small screen history. Even worse than Angelus's Irish accent.

S3
Best: Buffy.
Although I really enjoyed Oz, Giles and Faith this season as well, Buffy carries the entire thing the whole way through. It's really her story.
Worst: Xander. I don't hate the guy; his behavior this season was just really annoying.

S4
Best: Willow.
Although I adored her before, this is the season where she really came into her own (and also was not cheating on the wonderful Oz with...ugh, S3 Xander).
Worst: Adam. Worst. Big Bad. Ever. Anyone and everyone associated with The Initiative, come to think of it.

S5
Best: Giles.
He becomes spectacularly relevant again after S4's "oh-no-the-Scoobies-are-growing-up-and-I-don't-have-a-role-with-them-anymore" mid-life crisis. He wins this season just for his final moment with Ben.
Worst: Dawn. I know it wasn't really her fault that some monks made this blob of energy into a human girl, but my word she was annoying. I still can't hear "Get out! Get out! Get out!" without wincing. Riley is a close second, if only for sticking around way too long.

S6
Best:
Can I say nobody?
Worst: Spike. Buffy may have gotten over the rape attempt, but I never will. I will also never get over how he spent the entire season telling Buffy she "came back wrong" and furthering her isolation from everybody but himself. And then scurrying off to get his soul for "that bitch"? How is any of that romantic? Nobody else comes close this season, although I would like to name Warren as a distant second because of what he did to Tara.

S7
Best: Anya
, which isn't saying a lot, only that nobody really stood out this season. I liked her brief return to demonhood, and her viking flashbacks. Also, R.I.P.
Worst: Buffy. It pains me to say it because she was my favorite character in the earlier seasons. In S7 she just became out of control bossy and arrogant. Spike is a close second, if only for, once again (albeit perhaps not as directly or intentionally this season), pulling Buffy away from her friends and allies and serving as a useless, indefatigable yes-man.

ATS:

S1
Best: Doyle.
R.I.P.
Worst: Nobody.

S2
Best: Angel.
We have never seen his character go through such a range of emotions, motives, and actions before. Angel killed it this season, and he made time to go see Buffy some time after her mom died (ok technically that scene happened on BTVS but it happened on the same timeline so I'm counting it as part of his character this season).
Worst: Lindsey. Something about him just really annoyed me. I think maybe it's that he always acted like he and Angel were these great rivals, even though he could never really touch Angel. Or maybe it was his smarmy voice. Or his unctuous obsession with Darla. I don't know. Just everything about him. (I did like his "evil hand" rant though.)

S3
Best: Wesley.
He may have alienated himself from his friends, but he made himself the single most interesting man on the show in the process. Second is Darla. How many characters have gotten as great an arc as she had with the whole pregnant vampire thing?
Worst: Justine. Her blind loyalty to Holtz utterly baffled me.

S4
Best: Wesley.
Bestley. (Faith makes an awesome return as well, but Wesley is just great for the entire season.)
Worst: Jasmine (including when she was posing as Cordelia), and Connor. These two just go hand in hand this season. Everything about them was a joke. A terrible, terrible joke.

S5
Best: Angel.
He was a bloody puppet for crying out loud! But in all seriousness, I really enjoyed that he regained his sense of purpose this season. Illyria would've been my first choice, but Angel edges her out because he is, after all, the title character. I will say this though: if you're going to sacrifice one of your most beloved characters in order to make room for another to be played by the same actress, Illyria is the right way to do it (I'm looking at you, Jasmine).
Worst: Buffy. Ok, ok, so she doesn't actually appear, (although we get two episodes with laughably bad stand-ins who cover their faces with their generic blond hair. No. Thank you). But if this answer doesn't count, then I'll have to go with Knox, simply for his annoying attempts to woo Fred and then, um, yeah. Getting her killed.

Buffy TVS
Season 1-
Best: Buffy (classic slayer wit and Buffy bad-assery) .
Worst: The Anointed One (never understood the point of him)

Season 2-
Best: Angelus (Do I really need to explain this?)
Worst: Hmm... Kendra I guess. It's a good season for the vast majority of the characters IMO, but yeah I'll go with Kendra. The first slayer other than Buffy really should've been more interesting.

Season 3-
Best: Faith and Mayor Wilkins (a big part of why season 3 is my fav)
Worst: Xander (Far too many unlikable moments for me this season.)

Season 4-
Best: Willow
Worst: Any character to come out of the Initiative. They kind of blur into a big, obnoxious, mass of grandiosity to me.

Season 5-
Best: Torn between Giles and Spike.
Worst: Riley (was glad to see that helicopter fly)

Season 6-
Best: Tara (she really learns to stand her own ground and toughen up)
Worst: Oh boy, there's a lot of competition for this one. I'm going to go with Xander. Yeah I know, I know, yellow crayon... but "Hell's Bells", "Entropy" and his subsequent "Oh how sorry I feel for myself" parade are fresh in my memory.

Season 7-
Best: Dawn (I was surprised by how much I liked her.)
Worst: Andrew (I don't find him remotely funny) and Buffy (I jumped to her defense a lot when s7 first aired. But having rewatched season 7 recently, I found myself warm with fury at her. She's an asshole this season). But as with season 6, there's some stiff competition.

BtVS:

Season 1
Best: Buffy
Worst: Not really anybody in particular, but I disliked a lot of the one-shot students we got before the regulars like Harmony, Jonathan and Larry showed up.

Season 2
Best: Angel/Angelus. Best Big Bad ever.
Worst: Xander, only because he's kind of an asshole. He's still a superbly written character though.

Season 3
Best: Faith, no contest.
Worst: Nobody. Everybody was on fire this season.

Season 4
Best: Buffy
Worst: Spike. You're gonna be seeing a lot of him, juust FYI.

Season 5
Best: Buffy, Willow, Glory
Worst: Spike

Season 6
Best: Tara. She doesn't have much competition
Worst: Spike

Season 7
Best: Faith
Worst: Spike, Buffy, the whole damn house.

ATS

Season 1
Best: Everybody
Worst: Nobody

Season 2
Best: Angel, Darla
Worst: Dunno. Maybe Wesley's girlfriend from "Guise Will be Guise," though I find her more boring than offensive.

Season 3
Best: Lilah, Wesley
Worst: Linwood and Gavin. Piss poor substitutes for Holland and Lindsey

Season 4
Best: Faith
Worst: Jasmine-possessed Cordy

BTVS:

S1
Best: Buffy.
I fell in love with this character when I first saw this show. She was just so... Buffy. Reluctantly heroic and still a quirky, witty regular girl in so many ways.
Worst: A tie between Natalie French and The Anointed One. Both rather lame bad guys, and also - never did find out what happened to those eggs Ms. French left behind...

S2
Best: Angel, Spike and Dru
I just loved these characters, their changes, attitudes and especially any moment when they were all three together on screen.
Worst: Kendra. Just underwhelming. But I'll admit, I really can't stand that accent so that migth be my biggest gripe.

S3
Best: Slayer power. Buffy and Faith.

Worst: Joyce and Angel. Joyce because for the first time I found her really annoying and Angel because was so glad to have him back but even my big ol' Bangel heart found a lot of their drama a bit tired by now. (don't get me wrong there are also great Bangel parts that I love but it feels like they could have done... I don't know, something more with it.)

S4
Best: Spike
I know he's inbetween and kind of in an awkward phase here but he's funny and almost no one else is this season. They're all awkward and inbetween but at least Spike does it with a little bit of flare.
Worst: Professor Walsh and her beefed up boy-band, sorry I mean the Initiative of course. Speaking of which - why were there no girls in that group?

S5
Best: Buffy again.
Honorable mention to Giles. In season 4 he was kind of drifting but he comes back in force here. As does Buffy. She feels a lot more grown up very fast.
Worst: Dawn. Yeah yeah, I've said it before and I'll say it again. I might never like anything about Dawn in season 5. The general concept is good but MT is terrible and only annoying.

S6
Best:
Though one. Buffy probably. It is her struggle and SMG does heck of a job acting it (I'd get depressed working on that season too, having to live with those emotions all day long)
Worst: Spike. I'm on the same page as @Aud here... honestly, they can write circles around this and have Buffy say that "he wasn't so bad" and forgive him all she wants, but I will never ever forgive the character for that. Completely hamhanded storyline that they seem to want to be forgotten afterwards. In my book rape however is not a good 'go to' device to motivate a character into action (nope, not impressed it inspired him to get his soul).

S7
Best: The Sunnydale Sign
. Honestly to me no one really shines in this season, not even Faith.
Worst: Buffy. Watching this season, or trying to watch it again and failing, I felt that she really is the problem for me. I feel like I don't 'know' her anymore so to speak. I want to root for her like I always have but this season it is just so hard. What the hell happened?

ATS:

S1
Best: Angel.
Glad to see him on his own and making his life. Cordy comes in second. Lindsey is third.
Worst: The entire episode She.

S2
Best: Angel.
Again. Love his whole arc and love seeing him with Darla.
Worst: Kate. Sorry babe, you're just annoying now.

S3
Best: Wesley and baby Connor.
Seriously, could that kid have been cuter?
Worst: Cordy.
Put down your tar and pitchforks, please ;P This is where she started to annoy me because this is where I felt like she officially stopped being Cordy. There's evolving and there's jumping fifteen chapters ahead without further ado. Forced and painful to watch.

S4
Best: Faith, Lilah and Wesley

Worst: Angel, Cordy and the Beast. We all know the story about Charisma's pregnancy and Joss' reaction and you know what - it shows in her acting. This is a terrible season for her. Just terrible. Angel isn't all that much better either come to think of it. Kind of just... petty and meh this season.

S5
Best: Angel, Spike, Illyria
I like Angel again and I love his interactions with Spike for the most part. Illyria was just inspired. Heartbreaking and awesome storyline.
Worst: Eve. Can't stand her. Also Harmony. It was like a punishment to see her come back and to be around all the time.

I decided not to focus on any of the major players and fix my attention to the supporting cast. For best, I listed the character which I thought brought the most to the story/scene for the time they were allowed. For the worst I focused on under/undeveloped characters; the characters on my worst list could have been much better (and should have been) if they were allowed to develop a bit. The worst part is potential never realized from these characters.

Sure, rub it in. But what does that have to do with the list?

A very succint list... no motivations?
Let me say first that liked can mean the most effective character and not the one I found personally appealing. Usually it's both but sometimes it's not.
