Better final season and series finale: Buffy Season 7 or Angel Season 5

I'm pretty sure when it ended they were all assuming Angel was returning to television. Joss had pushed for an answer and got a "No" (I'm sure somebody will have more details or a source about this, I'm going by memory from an interview).

Which is why if I had the choice of Buffy or Angel returning for a series, I'd choose Angel.

No doubt I think seven seasons was enough for Buffy whereas Angel was on a roll at the time and could have gotten at least another season. You maybe right, but its not
the impression I got from what I've heard. To me the ending is very symbolic and I never thought of it as being something left open to return to in TV form at least.

On February 14, 2004, the WB Network announced that Angel would not be brought back for a sixth season. The one-paragraph statement indicated that the news, which had been reported by an Internet site the previous day, had been leaked well before the network intended to make its announcement.[28] Joss Whedon posted a message on a popular fan site, The Bronze: Beta, in which he expressed his dismay and surprise, saying he was "heartbroken"[29] and compared it to a "healthy guy falling dead from a heart attack."[30] Fan reaction was to organize letter-writing campaigns, online petitions, blood and food drives, advertisements in trade magazines and via mobile billboards, and attempts to lobby other networks (UPN was a favorite target, as it had already picked up Buffy). Outrage for the cancellation focused on Jordan Levin, WB's Head of Entertainment. It was the second highest-rated program to be canceled on the WB.[31]

Head writer David Fury "guaranteed" that if Joss Whedon had not requested an early renewal, Angel would have been back for a Season 6:

The only reason that Angel didn't come back...it's a very simple thing. Because our ratings were up, because of our critical attention, Joss specifically asked Jordan Levin, who was the head of The WB at the time, to give us an early pick-up because every year they [would] wait so long to giveAngel a pick-up [and] a lot of us [would] turn down jobs hoping that Angel will continue– he [Joss] didn't want that to happen. So, he was feeling very confident and he [Joss] just asked Jordan, "Like, make your decision now whether you're going to pick us up or not," and Jordan, sort of with his hands tied, with his back up against the wall, called him the next day and said, "Okay, we're cancelling you." Jordan's no longer there and The WB has since recognized...I believe Garth Ancier at The WB said that it was a big mistake to cancel Angel. There was a power play that happened that just didn't fall out the way they wanted it to. We wanted to get an early pick-up, we didn't. In fact we forced them [the WB] to make a decision, and with his hand forced he [Levin] made the decision to cancel us.

I guarantee that, if we waited as we normally did, by the time May had come around they would have picked up Angel. I can guarantee that.[32]

So, yeah I think it's safe to say it was intended to come back.

Maybe. Its hard to say. It would have worked visually good I'm sure but weather it would have been worth it storyline wise I don't know. The best thing they could had done was to have made it a different case each week I think. But comic book form is different because of it being a different discipline and the difference in how you consume it.

Angel season 5 is more consistent and filled with better episodes for the most part, over Buffy season 7. 'Destiny', 'Damage', 'You're Welcome', 'Smile Time', 'A Hole in the World' and 'Not Fade Away' ('A Hole in the World' for me especially; it's my favorite Angel episode). Just blows Buffy season 7 off the stage. I do really like Buffy season 7, but it is probably my second to least favorite BTVS season, with season 1 being even weaker. But hey, every season of Buffy (and Angel) is good. And at least there's 'Lessons', 'Conversations with Dead People', 'Storyteller', 'Lies My Parents Told Me' and 'Chosen', all solid eps in my opinion. But even the best of season 7 ('Conversations...') still can't compare with those Angel season 5 episodes I listed above. For me, anyway.

I still think Buffy S7 on the whole is the more consistent season, but that maybe there were more stand out episodes from the last season of Angel. There were a couple of weaker ones too though I thought.

I agree with a lot of the arguments already made.

Buffy s7 was probably my least favorite of BtVS, but Chosen was epic. Sure, the plan was awful, and the amulet thing almost stupid. But if you don't concentrate too much on these things, the finale was not only epic, but SO, SO satisfying. When I first watched it I had to pick my jaw up from the floor, it just felt so dam good. Sure some characters died, but as people already said, it's so hopeful. It's such a great end, finally, after 7 years, Buffy gets to be free. She changed the rules and now she will finally be able to live her life. It was just a great ending the that show, because through out everything, the main theme was Buffy being the one girl in all the world, but at the same time the theme was also about building a family, and how for the first time a slayer worked with a team, and it's pretty safe to say Buffy exceeded her life expectancy. Buffy was doomed to die from the start, which is also why the Gift is a great episode, but Chosen is amazing exactly because it changes those rules. A show like Buffy needed a hopeful ending.

But as said, the comics do ruin this.

AtS s5 is a different beast, overall the season was very strong. And NFA was also a great episode. I think it suited Angel. Whereas BtVS was more suited for the ending being about ending the fight for good, AtS was more suited for the fight to be never ending. The main theme was always redemption, and by s5 we finally understand that redemption is not something you can win, or gain, it is something that you have to work for every. In the end, Angel will die seeking redemption. Not only Angel, but it's also relevant to the other characters. Illyria is learning to fight for something that she would have destroyed when she first appeared, Wes finally obtain the peace he deserves, Gunn does the only thing he's ever known by protecting his family and fighting alongside the team, Spike finally fights for something he believes in and not just for someone else's cause, Lorne makes a huge sacrifice to help out his friend and then decides to step away finally doing something for himself. The finale just makes a whole lot of sense for everyone.

Overall, they were equally fitting for each show, but I do think I like NFA a tiny bit more overall. Actually, I'd rather watch Chosen, but NFA was superior in quality (not just for that ep, but for what fallowed and also what came before the ep).

Now looking back at both shows, I can say I enjoyed 'Not Fade Away' much more. (especially after reading the Angel comic 'After the Fall'). What really hit the homerun for me were the major characters being all bad$$ and the last scene of Angel. It left the such a great open ending. Plus the last bits of dialogue made me pop.
