Ok I feel like a rant.

Why oh why is it actors that get all the glamour and glory for films?

You don't see producers or directors going on chat shows or being interviews half as much as you do actors. And we all know the reason

Actors are the good-looking ones!

Ok that's not fair.

Mainstream Hollywood they are. You know the type who gets hired for their name over their talent.

And what really annoys me as a director is when people think actors make the piece to quote a recent post "He just wrote/directed this one"

Right I'm not going into which film or director that's not the point.

Writing makes the thing from nothing and directing is what stops it from being a stage play!!

Why now?

Last night Meg Ryan was on Parkinson promoting some new film. And spent the whole interview (when she wasn't evading questions and being terrified) talking about the director. There's a clue here. If we'd had said director it would have been a lot more interesting!!

Ok this probably looks like a directors pride parade. Which is I suspect partly is. But to quote Richard E Grant
"Acting's the easiest job in the world you just stand in a room and get told what to do!"

What do you guys think?

How to put this?

Do you like about projects from the actors or straight from the josses mouth??? 😀

Debate.

well i actually think joss is cute and i think that the producers and writers and directors should go on

not the raging argument i was expecting but it'll do 🙂

how about the next DVD release should read "produced by Joss Wheadon - Sex Symbol"

yes that would be quite swell, i will try to think of a good argument for you lol

You're preaching to the converted here, Faldor. Good though the actors can be, it's the director ( plus writer and crew) who make or break a film for me. I look for "A film by Ridley Scott" or "A Tarantino movie" rather than "starring Johnny Depp" - although Mr Depp's presence is always welcome 😉

the same here

Well. I guess this is where I come in. I don't have alot of time, but I'll try and make my case.

Ok sure, directors have alot of work to do, setting things up, and 'telling people what to do', but there ARE the actors.

The actors/Actresses devote they're life to the cause of movie making, television, plays, and it takes alot of work! I myself am a hope to be actor. I constently wish I could watch 'Angel' or any other shows that matter the same. But instead I;m thinking 'Oh how tough that would be to do' or 'How did they make themselves cry like that.'

Take the Matrix for example. Sure Reeves, Fishburne, and Weaving are told what to do, by trained professionals, but they are also the ones DOING it. Imagine how hard it is to force yourself to cry, when seconds before you were all 'Happy face' like SMG can do. Or in a fight scene, and stopping your fist/foot before you hit someone. Thats even more work.

Plus MOST actors/actresses have to keep themselves in shape and deal with the publicity they EARN. Directors can get fat if they want, or ditch a news crew alot easier. (yes may have to do with not being as popular), but Acting is in my opinion ALOT harder then directing.

by the way, I admit I;ve never directed and barely acted, but I don;t think many directors live in their cars, while trying to get a gig. (as some actors do).

Ok thats all I got for now, hope I said everything ok. Don't have time to edit.

in the end, directors matter more... sure, actors do all that, and alot deserve respect... but proof is easily found when you watch and compare a low budget with almost unknown actors that sometimes aren't really that good themselves, but with a good director, to a movie with a meh director with all the money and all the number one actors in the world, I mean even De Niro and the like have been in bad movies...

The films/shows needs everybody. Can't work without everybody having his/her own place. I do agree with you that I believe there should be more credit where it belongs, but I think certain movie people, say yourself, understands that and makes sure to give it to the appropriate parties often!

What it boils down to is an amazingly simple principle:

People KNOW who actors are because they recognize their faces. Directors like George Romero or Ang Lee or Ridley Scott might be brilliant geniuses, but Joe TalkShowAudience wouldn't know them if they came up and collectively bit him on the ass.

*I* think directors are interesing. Obviously many of us on BuffyBoards find the behind the scenes work and the folks who do it interesting. But most people don't, just like they don't give a **** who built their car or who designed their non-stick frying pan.

I agree that the writers/directors play the key role, and really make a movie/show what it is. I do however, also think that the actors play a huge role. For instance; I think that Buffy would be completely different without SMG Alyson Hannigan, Nick Brendon or ASH, not to mention the other important characters. Each actor brings some unique part of themselves to the role they are playing, they help to make it what it is.

So, my view: We wouldn't have the movies/shows that we love and admire without the great writers and directors, but would they still be the movies we love and admire without the actors who contribute to them?

Interesting thread. It's always been like this throughout film history. I do agree that directors and writers deserve more acknowledgement, they are really what makes a film go... but the end product is definately a team effort.

In the eyes of Hollywood it might be said that giving directors and writers the recognition they deserve could be a dangerous thing; these creators often have an axe to grind or some critique on society, politics, etc. Putting a face to an individualist in Hollywood (and in any big-money business) can ruffle feathers and make waves. Actors on the other hand are trained to read another person's words, to be pretty much passive. Sure they bring some of themselves to the part, but it's not easy to cop a plea this way and they're the safest bet when representing a film.

if i were a director or a writer...or a major person behind the camera...i wouldn't care...cause that's where the real money is made...plus...they are garenteed a job...acting is a very fluid industry...

at one moment you could be brad pit...and the next...have to much wrinkles to be a major draw at the box office...its even worst for chicks...

I agree completely with Kindred.
Directing, writing, acting, it's all hard in a different, most respectful way. But most people see the acting first. A face to the name. I think it depends on the talent. Some can write, some can direct and some can act. Then you have the ones that can do it all. But ultimately the main stream will detect the acting abilities because that is who they see. It isn't that the actors don't deserve recognition...it's just that I wish sometimes that a writer/director could get more of what they deserve...but yes, acting is extremely dificult and very huge part of what makes a movie what it should be...

Faldor, I kinda agree with u, but however not entirely.

Writers & directors, in my mind, (coz I wanna become one) haven't the aim to be very popular, coz I mean, when u see that there r million of ppl who go to see ur film, I think u r already so glad, & be able to tell urself, yep, that's men I did it, it's enough.
Of course, lots of ppl wanna be famous, but is a famous writer as good as when he is not know ?
Bloody movies with good actors do exist, so it means that the writer & director count a lot.
Myself, I'm totally admirative & astounded by Joss' work, & by some other writers & directors.

Zander8472

and directors just wake up one day and say "forget this being a newsagent lark im going to direct a film!" i think not 😉

erm your argument seems to be "actors work very hard!" which is true, i agree they should get some attention but just not all of it!

LazyDolphin

i think its like that because Joe Talkshow never invites the directors on 😉

Soulgasm

im talking from a veiwers point of veiw i want to see directors not actors going on about directors!

Frenchy Faith

your probabley right, we see so many actors cos they love shoving their face down the camera! 😀

i think its like that because Joe Talkshow never invites the directors on
The exception that proves the rule being Tarantino, of course, who was on a lot of UK TV shows a couple of weeks ago (or seemed to be, anyway🙂) after the "Kill Bill" premiere. Perhaps he got on 'cos of his acting rather than the rest of his "auteur-y" skills😉
