Blu-Ray or DVD?

Do you have a Blu-Ray player, or are you still using DVDs? I have a DVD player installed in my TV, but I've noticed that it's next to impossible to find current movies that come out ONLY on DVD. Most of the time you have to buy the Blu-Ray/DVD combo packs. 🙁
I have to wonder how much better the viewing is on a Blu-Ray? I am thinking of getting one for our family for Christmas.
 
I hate that they came out with Blu-Ray cause it's replacing DVDs and you have to buy a new player! It's just really annoying. It's like everytime they come out with a new ipod, they're just trying to one up themselves.

I've just always felt getting a Blu-Ray was a waste of money. I mean the players and actual disks are so much more expensive and for what? The quality's not THAT much better. My guess, they'll fade out when the next big thing comes. They won't replace DVDs. They'll be like 8-tracks... which I've heard didn't replace the record and faded out quickly. (I don't know for sure because I wasn't alive)

I was "alive," and 8 tracks were replaced by cassettes just as quickly as possible. 8 tracks were terrible. You couldn't rewind them, and they were always fouling up.
I still don't have a Blu-ray player. I have a large DVD collection, but I'm not that torn about it. I'll eventually get a blu-ray player because you can still play regular DVD's on it and it kind of up-converts the picture on it, which is sweet.

I watch movies on Blu-ray all the time at work, and let me just say that it is AMAZING. I can't wait to get mine.
 
If I can still watch my DVDs on it, it seems worth it to go ahead and get one. I just hate paying $30 per movie. 🙁
 
I cannot say I agree with anything anyone has said here at all in terms of the negatives mentioned.

I have both a PS3 and a standalone Blu-ray player. The quality is indeed THAT much better. It's night and day. As long as expectations are realistic - movies are not, I repeat NOT supposed to look like Pixar animated digital perfection.

Blu-ray is the next best thing to recreating the true theatrical experience.

The purpose of all the Blu-ray / DVD combo packs is to "future-proof" a collection, and give a variety of viewing options depending on one's situation.

Blu-ray is here to stay, and I've noticed over the years that those who knock it do so out of misinformation, and sometimes stubbornness for a variety of reasons. Does it outright replace my DVD collection? No. It doesn't need to unless I want it to...that's entirely up to the user. One doesn't render the other useless.

Home theater is one of my passions, and I'm actually wrong guy to have that kind of interest given how piss-poor I am, but I manage. I wholeheartedly recommend a Blu-ray player. The prices have come down dramatically, the technology is much improved, and it makes your existing DVDs look even better, not obsolete. There are only gains to be had here, no losses.
 
I found a Blu-Ray player on the Wal-Mart website for $140, and it says you can stream Netflix through it... 🙂 If I can do that, then I'll let my kids take the Wii to their bedroom and keep the Blu-Ray down here. 😀

yes do that! although, if you have one nearby, there are Blockbuster stores that have Blu-ray players that have Blockbuster on demand AND Netflix instant streaming on it for only $50 and they are top quality players, like Samsung and Sony.

I'm Still Using My DVD Player, I Don't Like The Blue-Ray It's Like $30 for a movie, But It Will Probably Be Like The VHS'S, Soon Everyone Will Have A Blue-Ray

Nope. The only console that plays Blu-ray discs is PS3.

It's still pretty much the best Blu-ray player out there that'll handle anything.

There is some competition from a few stand-alones, but for reliability and speed it's fantastic.

Negative miss. The only vi-system that plays blu-ray is the PS3. Although, Microsoft is coming up with an external blu-ray player for the X360 soon.

Wii, unfortunately, will never play Blu-ray. That kind of technology is far too advanced for Nintendo.

I wouldn't count on that. Microsoft still keeps up the bitterness of HD-DVD failing and is always saying "who needs Blu-ray anyway?".

I got my PS3 for Blu-ray, not for gaming. Not a gamer at all, really but all the features - the video / music / photo playback, the streaming, the online store (and yes it does have Netflix)...it's the best piece of technology I've ever had.

you're got a point there. Microsoft keeps lying to me!! lol

Also, If you're looking for JUST a Blu-ray player, maybe the PS3 isn't the best way to go, since that system is $300. I'd stick with a $50 Sony Blu-ray player.

But if you do want all the extra goodies of a PS3 (web browsing, file storing,etc) then go for it! it's like a mini computer!!!

Well I hate that they always come out with new things to replace out ones it could just be me. But I'm perfectly happy with my PS2 and DVD player for now.

Very true. 🙂

That's great though - a Sony player that affordable. I got my standalone (also a Sony) for $99 on Christmas Day of last year when Blockbuster had a special for that day. To think it's even more affordable now and THAT fast - DVD players didn't come down in price remotely as fast!
 
I never even thought about upgrading to a Blu-Ray til my daughter got her "Beauty and the Beast" DVD/Blu-Ray combo pack for her birthday and there's a zillion special features on the Blu-Ray that aren't available to watch on the regular DVD. That kind of thing pisses me off... But like I said before, if I can still watch all my DVDs on the player we may still end up getting one.
