Blu-Ray or DVD?

The reason for that is obvious, though - Blu-ray is the successor to DVD, and DVD sales are dropping fast. It makes perfect sense that the real bonuses are Blu-ray exclusive.

Every Blu-ray player available plays DVDs. As I said, there are no losses here, only gains.
 
Also, for those curious, Blockbuster sells used Blu-ray DVD's from between $12.99 to as low as $3.99

There is nothing wrong with them. Blu-ray is pretty much indestructible lol. They have just been previously viewed rentals.

Also, if Walmart here in Canada offers Blu-ray titles at insanely low prices often (Can't tell you how much that has pissed me off, seeing movies I did pay like $30 for suddenly on sale for as low as $14) I can only imagine the deals in American Walmart stores.
 
My kids aren't into gaming (yet) so we don't have a gaming system, so I love getting Netflix through my Samsung Blu-Ray! Although, as evidenced by comments on my Netflix thread, there do seem to be more problems with Netflix streaming on freestanding Blu-Rays than PS or Wi. The only downside is that the other players we have in the house are DVD players, so I can't watch my new Firefly discs anywhere else! 🙁

Are they really that indestructible? I am sooo tired of DVDs getting scratched up quickly on the DVD player in the van. Are there new vehicles coming out with Blu-Rays?

Yeah, really... I have had to throw away a lot of movies over the years 'cause my kids scratched them up so bad. 🙁 If the Blu-Ray discs are more scratch-resistant, sign me up.
 
Blu-ray discs themselves are indeed more scratch-resistant because they have a special hard-coat layer.

Like I said, owning a PS3 myself has absolutely nothing to do with video games at all. I use it for everything else it does.

The only way to destroy a Blu-ray disc is either by snapping it in half, which is a bit harder than you think, or if you purposely take a knife or a pair of scissors and have at it. Trust me, they are like indestructible hahahaha. I mean, you may get a scratch here and there, but it will never affect the content because the content is buried under layers upon layers of protective stuff.
 
I ordered a Blu ray player this morning with the lord of the rings trilogy Ive only ever seen Dark Knight in hi-def and oh my god it looked amazing. Cant wait for it to come!
 
DVD all the way for me - blu-ray, high-def, 3D... all that jazz is overrated in my opinion and I really can't be bothered to switch over to it unless at some point I really will have to. But even then I would be reluctant. Simply don't like the look of it.
 
I don't have a Blu-Ray player. It's pretty pointless if you don't have a hi-def TV, which I don't.

The picture quality is better with Blu-Ray, but I'm not really enough of a cinephile to care that much. It's not enough of a concern to make me pay $500 for a new TV and $200 for a new DVD player. Right now my old tube TV works perfectly well, and I won't replace it until it dies. I actually kind of like its picture better than the flatscreen hi-def TV's, which look fuzzy to me, especially up close.

Blu-Ray is awesome. But looking at any film older than 15 years and you can really notice the film grain. =/

Besides I can make my movies into Hi-Def just by wiping my glasses.

I hope you realize that film grain is supposed to be there. When it is digitally removed, the image ends up looking too digital itself - too smooth with no fine details since they've been smeared away.

CRT televisions will always make standard definition, specifically broadcast television, look better because HDTVs often reveal just how flawed the picture quality is, especially LCD TVs. An LCD will reveal every single flaw in any image. Plasmas are better for viewing SDTV.

Oh yeah, I get that. You can notice the grain even in recent releases. But it seems far less pronounced to me.

I think part of the reason may be that most films over the past 15 years have had more and more digitally composited shots, which have NO grain - because, you know, they're digital lol.


That is simply the direction that movie making has gone in. And in most cases technicians will have to go in and add grain to these shots so they don't look so out of place juxtaposed with the live action footage.

Whether its due to the quality of older film stock - or the half-assed transfers that many studio think they can get away with, the bottom line is that newer movies simply shine a lot more in Hi-Def than older movies. Just my opinion though. =)

Buy your movies on Amazon.com , new blu ray releases are the price of regular dvds at a local store. Well worth waiting for delivery!
 
I don't plan on getting a Blue-Ray player until I have the extra money. Then I don't even know if I will get one. It is a expensive price per movie.
I hear they have great vision from people and then some people say don't buy so I don't even know.

I have a question about the netflix I can stream that through my wii? Sorry I am just so lost when it comes to this stuff.

Yes you can. I think the wii is now the only console to stream Netflix via a netflix disc. Set up an account and let them know you want to stream onto your wii, and they will send you the disc that you need.

Yep! When they first started it, you had to have a Netflix disc sent to you but now all you need to do is download the Netflix channel for the Wii. 😀 I do it and it's AMAZING.
