Book Recommendations

Hello all!
So I need some book recommendations. I'm not an avid reader whatsoever. I pretty much just watch tv in my spare time, but I would like to get into reading.
I think the genres I would like would be:
1) Mystery
2) Fiction involving a love story
3) Fiction involving some sort of supernatural elements (i.e. why I love BtVS so much)

I am open to other suggestions.

Have you ever read the Buffy novels? These are easily accessible on Kindle and you can often find them for cheap on eBay.
I could recommend literally everyone of those.

For mysteries, I really of Kathy Reich's Temperance Brennan series. I started reading her books because of Bones, but they are so much better than the show. Tempe is full of whit and she has a knack of getting herself into precarious situations. All of her books are twists and turns. You can't go wrong with Kathy.

I'm not really into love stories, so I can't help you there.

I’m going to throw out a recommendation that fulfills two (possibly all three) of the three requirements you have here 🙂

The 7 & 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle

A man is tasked with solving a murder, but there’s a bit of a catch involved! There’s some serious supernatural elements and the mystery itself is genuinely good. The book may be a little difficult to get into at first, but once it clicks, I’m telling you, it clicks. I couldn’t put it down after the 50/75 page point.

Another one that I consider a must-read is Stephen King’s The Dead Zone.

Not a horror book like most of his catalogue, but rather a gripping drama about a man cursed to see the future. There’s a tragic love story at the core of the book and the story of Johnny Smith is captivating. Plus, it’s one of King’s shorter books, clocking in below 400 pages.

Last one would be The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue.

A girl makes a deal with a supernatural entity, and things naturally don’t turn out well. The story of Addie is interesting and eventually evolves into a quest for love in a world where nobody remembers you. V.E. Schwab’s writing is always compulsively readable to me and I can never put her books down.

Been awhile since I read Barbara Hambly, but she often puts all those in. I think only Search the Seven Hills is devoid of supernatural elements, though there is still a bit of mysticism to it (and a fascinating, complex story of Ancient Rome with a twist ending). One featuring vampires that I liked (though don't recall too much of it now) is Those Who Hunt the Night.

What are you reading?

Since I haven't finished a book in a while to post in the rate the last book thread, I figured I'd start a new what are you reading one. Always have several on the go, so currently reading the illustrated version of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and also the Earthshot book.

I did mention the romance...if you NEED "romance" to be angst-filled teen drama (as is too often in the Whedonverse, and too much media aimed at adult audiences these days, like the extremely cringeworthy and nonprofessional Uhura-Spock arguments of the new Star Trek movies) then you may not like it. But I found the mature romantic relationships (some a bit more complicated than that) to make the story more compelling rather than irritating, and didn't make me think, "Wait, the world is ending, and you want to have a lover's quarrel over THAT?" The end of the world definitely impacted their relationships, but in a way that both drew me further into the story and care about their relationships rather than making me think these people deserved to die.

Im currently watching the Buffy tv show and know there are comics, but I'm really more of a book person. I've seen that there are quite a few books and comics about angel, buffy etc... but I have only really seen people talk about the comics. Are the books worth reading or not? also if they are...
