I surprised that Gen Z'ers even know how to tie their own shoelaces.......oh wait, maybe they don't. Have you seen the new Skechers "slip-in's" commercial? Humm?

And older folks get slip-ons so they don't have to bend over. Does anyone think of the poor shoelace factory workers and the hungry mouths at home?

Mattel has done some research and found that younger, Gen Z people don't like the "competitive nature" of the game. So the new version will be "easier" and "more inclusive."

Sounds like pretty lousy research to me. Have you seen how competitive online shooters are? Or sports? In what world do they think people, of any age, don't like competition in games?

Such an odd change. Of all the games one could play, Scrabble would never have topped my list of those that are "too competitive." Oh no, slow down there, Grandma. No need to unleash your triple point exotic vocabulary on me. It's only a game! We might lose our friendship over crosswords, next!

More than likely this is marketing speak to dress up a completely banal change that nobody would care about. Companies love to target their product to whichever generation happens to be in their teens/20s right now. Invent a justification for why you speak to them.

First off, thanks for the correction! I don't think I recall reading this info in all my years (or I'd forgotten about it), so thanks!

Guess we can blame the Olympics for needing to provide everyone with a medal (or participation medal, more accurately) so everyone feels like a winner! Even in Scrabble. 😂😉

To be fair, if you're literally competing in the Olympics, even making it that far is worthy of laurels.

But I think that is it exactly. I am reminded of that scene in Sopranos where Meadow and Jackie Jr are playing Scrabble and he's making three-letter words. Competitive is just the code word for hard, hence following it up with words like easy and inclusive. That's why Words with Friends works, because it's designed that smaller words can still have a large value whereas with Scrabble the larger the word, generally, the bigger the value. Words with Friends is considered quick and easy to play whereas Scrabble is something that's thought of as harder and longer to play.

Ah yes, I remember those hard-arse competitive Scrabble-players from back in the day, terrifying people with their random verbosity and getting into dangerous 'street scrabble' competitions that left so many hospitalized.


I agree with @Spanky that this is just code for hard so they cop-out and say 'inclusive';
'please play scrabble, pretty please, it's super-easy, you don't have to know hard words or nothin'; Mattel probably.


If people don't want competitive board-games then they should try many of the awesome TTRPG's out there. Us role-players like to think that round a gaming table rolling dice there are no winners...only a whole bunch of losers.

Haha my experience of Monopoly was always the opposite. Everybody starts off excited to play and as it drags on and on everybody gets bored and it just peters out !

You may not have been around when the Cuyahoga river caught fire and burned down to the waterline.

The Kent State shootings by the National Guard happened there. I used to work with a guy who was there for both events.
