Brexit and Boris

Proportional representation.......... We did at the referendum
Except it was rigged - the most complicated and shitty system got proposed and then the propanganda that PR was complicated and shitty kicked in. It wasn't really a fair fight. Also you are consistenly fighting against a baised media.

The media was certainly bias , I attended the Brexit march into London the police made rout changes because of the large gatherings of left wing anarchism was waiting for it along the original rout
I stood in Parliament square with Farage stage about 80 yds to my left and Tommy robinson stage to my right the same sort a distance , there was no problems , no racism , no fighting ,nothing every body wes in good spirits I stayed to the very end when everybody had dispersed , about 7.30pm' getting home a couple of hours later and watching Channel 4 news , it was nothing like what had happened , showing police in riot gear , yobs chanting , it did not happen , all bull shit , total lies , I was there !
Personally the BBC coverage of Brexit was so pro Remain that they should no longer have the right to be funded by the very people they obviously think are stupid and there should be an enquiry as to the political bias

Yet again we disagree. I find it ok that Tommy effing Robinson or Yaxley Lennon as he was born as was preaching at an event you were at - you know a literal fascist and you see nothing wrong with this.

Fascist = against democracy....part of democracy is the freedom of speech , you may or may not agree with what Tommy Robinson says but he has the right to say it
But again you ignore my point and it was that the media was lying and bias , I was there and it was nothing like that was shown on Channel four news

Presumably you were there for a short period. Also you think a news channel has less cred than you who has proved you have a percularly unique take on everything. Yes Robinson (or Yaxley Lennon) has a right to his opinion but he doesn't have the right to a platform for it or for it to be unchallenged and yes call me whatever but being part of a far right group the English Defence League is definitely fascist. Even Farage knew it was bad optics and had former members of the EDL barred from UKIP. Robinson stood as an independent, lost his deposit and was laughed at when the pathetic amount of votes he got was called. He's also been imprisoned.

Freedom of Speech doesn't mean you can say anything and everything:

"Under Article 10 of the Human Rights Act 1998, “everyone has the right to freedom of expression” in the UK. But the law states that this freedom “may be subject to formalities, conditions, restrictions or penalties as are prescribed by law and are necessary in a democratic society”.

Those restrictions may be “in the interests of national security, territorial integrity or public safety, for the prevention of disorder or crime, for the protection of health or morals, for the protection of the reputation or rights of others, for preventing the disclosure of information received in confidence, or for maintaining the authority and impartiality of the judiciary”.

What is the law on hate speech?
A number of different UK laws outlaw hate speech. Among them is Section 4 of the Public Order Act 1986 (POA), which makes it an offence for a person to use “threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour that causes, or is likely to cause, another person harassment, alarm or distress”. This law has been revised over the years to include language that is deemed to incite “racial and religious hatred”, as well as “hatred on the grounds of sexual orientation” and language that “encourages terrorism”. Hate speech vs. free speech: the UK laws

That aside, no sensible person disputes the concept of media bias (the exception being - perhaps - Reuters briefs). The nature of language makes it difficult to avoid; the fact that news is only ever a partial picture; dominant, emerging and residual ideologies etc. Sometimes it's unconscious bias, sometimes it isn't. One could argue that Farage was given way too much coverage during the Brexit campaign and after. The point is, @katmobile was discussing bias in the 2011 Alternative Vote Referendum. You're discussing the 2016 Referendum on Europe. You're making an "apples are the same as pears" argument.

One could argue that Farage was given way too much coverage during the Brexit campaign and after.
One would struggle to argue otherwise since he's now being asked on Newsnight to give his take on Covid-19. Despite not being an MP or MEP and having zero expertise. There's just a minimum amount of Farage that must be broadcast to the nation.

They used to give castor oil to kids on a regular basis. Farage has a similar effect on me. :)
There is no need to be rude to another member just because you disagree.
Ok I do try not be but it can hard if someone is seeing things their own filter so much that I geuninely think they don't live in the same reality as the rest of us and still meet standards of politeness around here but I'll try.

Wrong again Kat I was there very early as we intended to join them in the march through London , but as the police had to move the march rout away from waiting yobs , so with are very little knowledge of London, we went to Parliament square instead and I was one of the last to leave to let the crowds get away
As for Tommy Robinson he has never been arrested or charged for anything to do with racism
And I can only say what I saw , and it was nothing like the lies that channel four news reported , no police in riot gear, no police fighting with Brexiteers it was all peaceful......maybe it was those looney lefty's venting their anger on the police for diverting the march away from their pre arranged ambushes? Whatever did or did not happen that evening it had nothing to do with the Brexit rally or Tommy Robinson
My Dad always said Kat....don't believe what you read and only half of what you see
As for me being biased because my views on politics and Spuffy are not the same as yours ? Sorry but its called free speech

Dora, there is also no need to have a go back at katmobile.

If the two of you can’t have a civil discussion on this or any topic, then refrain from commenting on each other.

Ok but it seems I can't even say that someone is biased.

Saying someone is biased is very different from saying someone doesn’t live in the same reality as everyone else. I’m not going to tell you again.

Well as expected Starmer is the new Labour leader. I've already seen the knives are out for him on social media, calling him a Blairite, taxdodger and even someone saying the Election was rigged to to move the party back to the center etc.. (which sounds far fetched to me). He wouldn't have been my choice I would have gone with Nandy. But I think her day may well still come. I'm relieved RLB didn't get in. I'm willing to give Starmer a chance.

One good bit of news at least is Angela Rayner getting in as Deputy leader. Very well deserved.

Me too. I hope he's tricked all the "centrist" goons into backing him and will actually continue to pursue the majority of Corbyns ideas to make the country better. Unfortunately that's a million to one shot. More likely he'll meet with the Board of Deputies and then start purging anyone on the left with false anti-semitism accusations used as an excuse.

We don't need another thread on UK politics so I'll put this here for those who are interested. Article explains a significant proportion of Labour MPs worked against the party and sabotaged attempts to deal with antisemitism investigations because of their partisan hatred of Corbyn.

Also the hard right propaganda rag The Jewish Chronicle to be closed after being sued repeatedly for their lies.

Essentially the whole antisemitism crisis was manufactured bullshit. Don't expect to see this given rolling coverage for the next 5 years.
