So seen as I had my heart stomped on this week and broken, I was wondering out of those with this experience what do you to to recover from this? Any songs you play? Things you do? Thoughts you have?

Use me as a rebound :)
I have always found that distance is the first step to getting over someone. You dont want thinkgs around you that remind you of the person. Secondly find something that can completely take your mind somewhere else, whether its a TV show, a movie, or a book. You also have to make sure you know that you cannot blame yourself.

^

I agree.

My advice? Ignore it. Try to focus on something else. If you're not thinking about it, it can't affect you. Seeing as how I just had somone turn me down for a date a few weeks ago, I know how you're feeling. It'll get better 🙂

Mostly just time and distraction! And, as you know me, sad country break-up songs. 😀 Stick anything that reminds you of him in a box and stash it somewhere for now.

Go see a movie, or go shopping, lunch with friends are all things good to escape thoughts. But eventually you need to get what's inside, out. Try expressing it thru writing or artwork 🙁

I'd suggest taking a new class or lessons of some sort; you can sign up for a short term 6-10 week cooking, sewing, music or workout class.....anything really. Just get involved in something new. That way you have a new hobby or interest to learn about (you may find something you love); you will meet new people and you're bettering yourself all at the same time.

Everyone is giving pretty sound advice, Nix, Nixxy, Nix-a-roni, Nix-a-tine. Turning your mind towards other things and activities and giving yourself plenty of "Me" time is always the way to go. And make sure you do things that YOU enjoy doing, even find NEW things that interest you.

I don't mean to sound unfeeling, but it may have been best that this happened, and around the time it did. I mean, if this is the way this person rolls, being in a relationship with them would have turned into a pretty unhealthy one if it had managed to go any further. You don't need that nonsense in your life, kiddo. You deserve a relationship, not a relationSHIT.

And for corn sakes, don't put yourself back out there too early. Heal that wound and recharge that battery above all. Another person will only be a transitional replacement and you are ultimately wanting a real relationship with someone.

And always take full advantage of the support of your friends, as they are there for you and want to help you make it past this unpleasant time. You are not alone.

In other words, Nixxy, forget that bum and go COOOOONNNGAAAAAA!!!!! 😀
Get down with your bad self! Shake what your momma gave ya! It will be all right, kiddo, I promise you.

Thanks for all the advice.....at least I have Halloween then Christmas coming up to keep me busy 😀 Hmmm will think about a new hobby....wonder what i'm capable of lol...

I'm so sorry, Nix... 🙁 My only advice is to distract yourself. If you take time doing things that take your mind of feeling so sad, then it helps a lot. I used this technique a lot when my husband was deployed, to keep myself from missing him so much, and it worked like a charm. Sooner than you think, you'll wake up one day and realize life goes on and you will be ok. God doesn't give us anything more than we can handle, and there's a reason for everything... You may not see it now, but this happened so you can meet and fall in love with the man who you were meant to fall in love with. 🙂

Here's a song for you...

It may sound silly but sometimes a good cry helps. I find if I have a really good sob and get it out there I can begin to formulate a plan. In the past when this has happened to me I have always 'reinvented' myself whether its a new haircut or colour, some nice new clothes or just some really decent nights out with your friends. I make sure I'm having fun, even if I'm broken inside, because I don't think theres anything worse than letting a person know they've upset you. I'm sorry things haven't turned out the way you wanted it to but sometimes things just happen for a reason, Mr Right could be right round that corner.

The girls are right, Nixxy. For those who believe in amor, in "meant to be".....I don't care who you are or what your personal beliefs are....there is definitely someone out there for everyone.
It's a hard slog through the muck to find that one person who will make us the happiest in the universe. Lots of encounters with those pesky heartaches. But in the end, it's worth it....because you will eventually meet the one you are supposed to be with. Mock if you want, folks, I don't give a rat's ass.

I went through the years with my own seemingly fruitless search...until I found my beautiful wife. And it will happen for you too, Nixxy. I know it will.
Until then, shake. What. Yo. Mama. Gave. Ya. It's all good. 🙂

I'm really sorry to hear that you're having a rough time. Heartache stuff is no fun. There was a thread a few months back that I posted in, and people seemed to like what I said. This was it:

When things get tough in my own life, I can honestly say I've never found a better therapy than Buffy. There's something about the show, maybe how much I connect with Buffy (and to a lesser extent Angel) that just...helps when the tough stuff comes around.

I'm really sorry. Going through heartbreak and the ensuing heartache are never, ever fun. You get this gaping hole in your chest that feels like it's never going to go away, and it's all you can think about. It's consuming, messy and brings out just about all the emotions we like to steer clear of. Unfortunately, everyone deals in their own way. There isn't any sure-fire method of making yourself feel better. Generally, I get angry, really angry. I'm talking fire-in-your-soul rage. I know it's not healthy, but for me, focusing anger on something is better than grief.

But anger only goes so far, and it's impossible to keep going. There are always going to be moments when it ebbs away and that empty hole comes back. I hate that. The last couple of years, things have been bad for me. Like, really bad. But like you said, Buffy has always been there, which is a big reason why it's so special to me. Watching Buffy, seeing a character(s) who I just click with so much, is incredibly comforting for me. Here are some of the episodes I always watch when things in real life get crappy:

Welcome to the Hellmouth: Love this episode. Buffy arrives in a new school, doesn't know anyone, has no friends and isn't coming from somewhere good. She's alone with a ton of baggage. But she meets Willow, Xander, Angel and Giles, and the seeds are sown that things will get better. Plus, there's the great feeling of knowing there's 12 more seasons to come.

Hero: This episode reinforces everything good I like to take from the Buffyverse. It's a message that we should never stop fighting, that life can be unfair and it can be mean, but our true strengths are that we have the power to make it better.

Chosen: This one I just fine incredibly inspiring and uplifting. If you're looking for one single episode to pick you up when you fall, this is it. This makes me feel better every time I watch it. We all have battles to fight, but there's always a new horizon.

Not Fade Away: "Let's go to work". Like Hero, this episode has the most powerful message of either series. There's always going to be another battle, another fight, always. But maybe that's the whole point; they're worth fighting. Picking yourself back up is what counts. The world isn't a great place, there is no bigger meaning or destiny, so what we do is all that really matters. The fight is what matters.

But more than any one single episode, Buffy herself is what makes me feel better. To each his own and all that, but for me, Buffy is just perfect. How she struggles, how she tries, how she leads and picks herself up; I couldn't design a better role model if I tried. And for me, when things get rough in the heart department, thinking of Buffy always, always makes me feel better.

I hope this helps, even a little bit. I'm sorry things are going crappy. If you ever want someone to chat with, shoot me a message.

I hope things get better. I like your idea of trying a new hobby. Throwing yourself into something like that is a really good plan.

Remember the one fact about relationships that some people don't want you to know:

Relationships are run by the most insane person in the relationship.

I can rattle off lots of instances of people I know who were in a reationship and put up with a lot of crap until they finally decided enough was enough, it wasn't going to get any better, terminated the relationship and lived happily ever after.

If the fates have cleared the decks for something better to come along, looking back and wanting to make something work that doesn't is a waste of creativity. I have a hobby or restoring antique radios and I have a couple that go back to 1925 out of an inventory that I honestly haven't had time to count. Trying to make things work that are clearly broken is not the way to go, either with a relationship or a radio. Things that can't be repaired should get replaced if, in fact, they were needed at all.

Buffy and Angel are shows with a buffet of relationships terminated and restarted like a typical soap opera. They are not models to follow, but they show that even the beautiful people have unhappiness in their lives - not necessarily like Xander leaving Anya at the altar, but there are plenty of other examples. The point is, unless you know you caused the breakup, you don't carry any blame.

I'm probably in the vast minority when it comes to things like this, but finding distractions and trying to invest myself in other activities actually makes things worse, IMHO. I found out that in my experiences, the more I try to ignore what I'm feeling and forget about what happened, after the party is over, or after that class is done, and the day is finished, that pain will creep right back up and slap me in the face. My advice? Scream. Holler. Yell. Cry. Whatever your feeling, don't run away from it. That's very dangerous, and will only make matters worse. Take a minute and look yourself in the mirror. Revaluate what happened. But the sooner you deal with the pain, the quicker you will heal. You are beautiful, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. And better days are right around the corner. Stevie was right, thunder only happens when it's raining. You just have to let it loose. 🙂

I can't believe that this thread has been up for a whole day and nobody has suggested meaningless rebound sex...

...but while I can't really speak from personal experience of these sorts of things, I'd suggest spending time with the people in your life who don't need you to put a brave face on for them and can accept whatever you feel or say about what you've been through without judging you for it.

Write things down, close the book up and put it away. Have a good cry to yourself. Then spend time with friends and family 🙂

I would also recommend a good cry and some kind of wallowing, then distract yourself. Somehow the feelings need to get out and there's nothing wrong with that, then I would recommend finding some nice songs to put on your ipod to listen to on repeat - maybe Florence + the machines "Shake it out" or Katy Perry's "Part of me" ?

*hugs Nixy*

Oh Nikki *BIG HUG*

Lots of pearls of wisdom here. And I think a good mix of letting yourself really sink into the feelings - and dabs of distraction is really all you can do.

Unfortunately the big mystery about how to get over a broken heart is - time.

and it sucks but, time takes time

It will get better though, this I promise!

Umm, that song isn't about a breakup =/. But I guess it applies.

Thats where my mind went. I say put on a short skirt, some thigh highs and spend the night doing stuff you don't want your daughter to know about.

Bad advice from a bad girl
I agree with Harley. In my experience, nothing makes you forget some guy as quickly as good sex with somebody else. Although, also from experience, just don't go for random strangers. The last thing you want is to sleep with someone and all the way through think of that other person and getting even more depressed - ever since that happened to me once I've become a bit more careful about these things. Usually what does work best is picking someone who you've already been attracted to and been flirty with before but stayed away because you couldn't. Also, try to be as sober as possible (not saying a glass of wine or two would hurt, just not get wasted) if you decide to go for this, because alcohol (not to mention other substances one could feel like using) make you emotionally unstable and unpredictable and that's probably not what you want in this situation.

At least that's what would help me best, distraction, but emotionally rather than just keeping busy. But at the end of the day, people are different, and what works for one person might be poison for others. I can imagine quite some people who read this will probably cringe at my advice, but honestly, I'm not saying you should definitely do this, it's just what works for me and if you feel like this might also be your thing, why not go for it.
