Buffy and Angel Episode Club

We should put the title of the episode we're discussing in our reply like I have here. That way people can keep track of what eppie we're talking about.

Okie doke. I thought we were going to start a new thread, but this makes more sense!

And I don't mind, Ashsan!

Welcome to the Hellmouth

Here is my little detail-induced description:

Theme of ep: Irony

First scene:
Notice the music. It is very typical of Dracula style old movies. Gothic sounding. I checked the credits and the composer is Walter Murphy.

Also, note that the scene is a stereotypical setup of an innocent girl getting killed.

Darla's outfit is that of a school girl's uniform. Plaid miniskirt, stockings (I think), cardigan, collared blouse. Her hair is blonde. All of her look points to her being the victim.

The guy is wearing a leather jacket which seems more threatening than Darla's apparall.

As we see, the situation switches to the biy being the victim, when we find out Darla is a vampire.

When the credits roll, notice the font in which "Buffy" is written. It is in the style of papyrus or something like papyrus...maybe Little Richard. In season two and on, "Buffy" is written in Gothic style font.

When we first see Buffy, she is in bed and having nightmares. Some of these dreams depict later episodes. Also, Giles later asks her if she has been having nightmares - this being an indication of her as a Slayer and the fact that they are positioned on a Hellmouth.

The prinicpal at Sunnydale High (for the first few episodes) is Principal Flutie, the same one from the Buffy movie.

During Flutie's and Buffy's discussion of her previous school, Buffy mentions:

"You're not seeing the big picture here. That gym was full of vamp- asbestos."

This may be an allusion to the movie, as the last scene of it was the gym being overrun by vampires, but also a good message. This is the first time we here the mention of "The big picture" which I think is a big theme throughout the show's running.

As the day starts out, notice Buffy's outfit compared to everyone else's. It's trendy, valley, and preppy. Most other people's clothes aren't as nice. This may be because of Buffy desperatley wanting to fit in and find friends.

In Buffy's first class, the first thing we see is a chalkboard with the word "Death" written on it. The teacher talks about the Black Death that killed many. But, oh, the irony.

Also, on the backboard are written:
"What, if anything, was gained scientifically?" and
"What were the repercussions?"
I know it's just a coincdence, but those seem to be big themes in season four.

Cordy is introduced and one of her first lines is "I'd kill to live in LA". An ironic statement being that she does ending up living in LA and killing things there.

When Buffy heads into the library, she is greeted by Giles with a book entitled "Vampyr". This is the first and possible last time we see this spelling of the word. I believe it is the older of the two spellings.

When Ora finds the dead body in her locker, why couldn't she smell him? Don't even bitten and sucked dry bodies leave an odor?

After Cor's mean comment to Willow, Buffy tracks her down. This isn't only another display of Buffy trying to make friends, but also that Buffy is a very nice person.

Xander and Jesse shortly follow after Buffy's arrival. Xander's comment "Well not much goes on in Sunnydale" is yet another example of irony and how very much goes on in the town.

This is just my opinion, but in the way Giles describes Sunnydale and how it attracts "mystical whozits", seems to be very similar to the occurances on ley lines.

Buffy makes her first speech on how hard being a Slayer is. not the physical training/endurance aspect, but the fact that she can never have any contacts or relationships to that of her Watcher. That she can't have friend's or family who know of her identity, because she might endanger them. She states that nothing, not even her Watcher, could prepare her for that.

Luke, the lead vampire, the strongest on so far, makes a prayer (A vamp prayin? Irony) during his revival of the Master:

"The world will bleed." Note the line in Restless (and possible other episodes) "The bloody cry. The penetrating wound." Similar in that both depict visions of blood and pain, yet one describes vamps and the other - a Slayer.

When Angel and Buffy first meet, he throws off any sign of him being evil. Or even a vampire. "I don't bite" and giving her a cross.

Angel: "You're pretty spry though." This line came shortly after Buffy was doing a handstand on a bar. In OMWF, season six, Buffy says "I'm pretty spry for a corpse" after doing a handstand on a vault.

Take in consideration that Angel seems to know about the Hellmouth, it's title and form, ("You're standing at the mouth of Hell") and yet Giles doesn't yet have a name for what it is.

At the Bronze, Buffy seems flirtatious and witty, always chock full of puns. This would tie in with Buffy's strength. (In Helpless, Buffy makes the comment during her lack of skills "If I was still the Slayer, I'd be punning it right about now") Yet Willow has no puns, no jokes, only vowel sounds. Her strength in correlation, seems to be lacking.

Buffy says to Willow: "Sieze the moment. Cause tomorrow you might be dead." Note to Jesse.

Buffy and Giles meet up. Giles desperately tries to make Buffy "see" vamps with Slayer skills - the "right" way. Buffy uses her own logic; this later results in B accidentally attacking Cordy.

Sidenote: Xander had earlier called Buff's wooden utensil a "stake" yet Cor called it a "stick".

In the masoleum, we see the first dusting of a vampire. Also, in this scene, Luke makes the comment "You have no idea what you're dealing with" which in later seasons becomes a line for Buffy to use.

Luke recites a prohecy that Hell will reign on Earth. This is what we will eventually see when the Hellmouth opens.

Ok, this might not be a one and only thing, but I just noticed here that the Grr Argh monster had a shadow!!!! Hehee.

Cordelia
awesome job :D
Just wanted to say something..."Vampyr" as it says on Giles book, is the way we write "vampire" in Norwegian...just so you all know...
I'm gonna go watch the episode now, while doing my homework at the same time...not a very good idea, but i'm gonna do it anyway!

And it's fine for me the switching thing!😀

Oh yeah? Well, that is interesting. Thanks for that!

Welcome to the Hellmouth

I'm about halfway through..I stopped watching to take care of my niece...but I think that Darla and Buffy were presented as opposites...both blonde, powerful, with similar fashion sense and as we find out later, both infatuated with Angel.

Also, did anyone like it better when they stated the "Into Every Generation..." speech at the beginning of the episode??

And as much as I love her, Cordy doesn't really look like she's 15/16 as they're supposed to be at the beginning of the show.

Good one.🙂 I didn't catch that.

Yes, I always liked that. I wonder why they stopped?

How old do you think she looks like?

In my opinion it got too repetative, I was glad they started doing the "Previously on"s.

Cordelia - good catch on the Darla/Buffy as opposites!

I just finished watching - I watched both the eppy and Josh's commentary.

My thoughts:

I love how this episode plays out. If you think of it, much of what we know for the rest of the series is set-up right here.

The Characters

You can tell right off the bad that Buffy is a person of substance and good character. The expression on her face (of shock and then disgust) when Cordelia disses Willow is priceless. She immediately realized just what kind of person she's dealing with...one who's very shallow and 'fake' for lack of a better word. (Remember though I like the character of Cordelia! These are just observations).

They jump right in and set-up the Big Bad for the season within the first scene after the opening credits (Buffy's dream about the Master).

Giles' and her relationship is so odd at first...it developed into such a loving and respectful relationship...but in this episode they were practically shouting at each other sometimes.

Here we learn how important the friends are. We are introduced to the soon-to-be scoobies. Buffy had renounced her duty as the Slayer. Yet that changes later in the name of friendship. It's nice because we see just how important these people are to Buffy and in her calling as the Slayer.

The introduction of Angel - hey that's definitly a good thing! 😀

The Clothes

I just had to chuckle whilst watching. Buffy was in her typical S1 getup the first time we see her outside. Miniskirt and boots. Willow - well her outfits definitly got better. For Xander they seemed to go overboard with making him look nerdy yet cool. And Angel...well Angel was in a black velvet blazer. Go Josh! 😀

The Locations

We get to see some of the most important and prevailant locations in the very first episode. The school, the all-important library, the Bronze, the cemetary.

I love that they talk about Sunnydale being a 'one-Starbucks town' yet it's the portal to hell. Sunnydale is a town that most people can relate too, and it makes it all the more real and plausible.

The Commentary

Did any of you listen/watch it? It just reminded me how funny Josh is. He had great things to say about all of the actors. The Master is The Maestro from Seinfeld! 😀

I loved hearing about the school and how they utilized their one hallway for the entire first season - brilliant job. I loved how everything was shot in one warehouse. Hearing Joss talk about the effects was great too. I definitly get alot from his commentaries...not just 'yeah well she's walking in here..oh the first 3 times we shot that she tripped.'

I really enjoyed this re-visit to the inaugural episode!!!! 🙂

Well said!
I agree with Jenny, dodgy 90s hair and dress. Cordy seemed to be the only one who didn't change over the three years in terms of style. Xander, well he got that silly haircut cut and why was he wearing a see-through shirt? Willow, glad she got better. Darla, never liked the catholic school girl look but didn't see much of it thankfully as she looked alright in close ups.

Anwyay onto the episode, a nice introduction. They got through the exposition in an interesting way, much better they do it through Buffy and Giles arguing it out then someone saying "Into every generation a Slayer is born" so dully.

I like the way the episode worked up towards the end and left on a nice cliff hanger.

I agree. I heard that Welcome to the Hellmouth and The Harvest were Pt 1 and 2 of the same episode, but did they air together?

Totally agree with you on those. Especially Xander...he had a dark tank top on underneath.

One other thing...did you notice that Buffy was supposed to play the quintessential valley girl...but her hair was pretty dark blonde! It got much lighter as the seasons went on.

Darla looked more how you'd figure Buffy would...perhaps another one of Joss' tricks?

Welcome to the Hellmouth

A great episode to start a great show...that's what i think!
I know Willow doesn't have the best fashion sense, but i really love her clothes anyway. It makes her special!
And I love Xander's hair...lol!
Buffy looks very special, and very different to later seasons, which i like.
Cordelia is being real shallow and everything, but so funny anyway.
And Giles is being very british! :hihi:

And as I said before, "Vampyr" is Norwegian for vampire...I wonder if that means anything, if the creators knew that, or if it's a coincidence...

I think I'm gonna watch the commentary later today, maybe I'll have something more interesting to say then!

I think "Vampyr" is the classic way of spelling it, like um other words I cant think of. But yeah I think its the old English way of spelling it.

Ok. I don't have a clue, I just know that's how we spell it in Norway! lol
