For the moment, I'm really optimistic about what we could expect for them in season 9. They have a lot of stuff they need to fix, and the romantic feelings are still there for both Buffy and Spike (even if it's less obvious in Spike's side) in my opinion. And the way they left each other in
Chosen was all about romance, I don't think they can forget that like if nothing happened... Buffy's fantasy in #37 was definitely a set up for a future development in my opinion (like the moment where Spike thinks she's distracted by thoughts about Angel, whereas she's fantasizing about *him*), and we know that Spike will definitely be a part of her life in season 9, according to Andrew Chambliss, the new writer. I really loved the way they wrote them and their relationship in season 8. "Look how much I don't care about you"
😛 Typical and perfectly in character. Buffy being sarcastic, angry and defensive is exactly the proof that she
does care about him. If she wasn't hurt by his attitude (the fact that he didn't tell her he was back), she wouldn't act like that. In season 8 ? She's everything but indifferent. And their scene in #40 ? Priceless. I expect to see more tension and more development. I don't think they will jump into a romantic relationship in season 9 (mostly because I think Buffy needs to find herself first), but they will be side by side I think, and well, knowing them, I think we'll get a lot of great scenes. The kind of scenes where there's a lot more under the surface. And romance has a lot of chance to be a part of it. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's how I feel for the moment.
Some references to Spuffy in Q/A & Interviews, concerning the season 9 :
From a Buffyfest interview :
What about a character that you're disappointed you won't get to write with Giles dead, Spike off in his Bug ship and Angel and Faith moving over to the Angel title?
Andrew Chambliss: Of course, I'm disappointed that I won't get to write Giles. If I learned anything from writing Adelle on Dollhouse, it's that British characters are fun to write. Maybe it's because you can add completely unnecessary letters to their dialogue, in words like “colour” or “aluminium”. Speaking of British accents, I can safely say that Spike won't be on his bug ship for very long. He'll definitely be a part of Buffy's Season 9 life.
From a Q/A in another forum :
All the announcements today were really exciting! I'm happy to hear Spike will be in season 9. Will he be having much interaction with characters other than Buffy?
Scott: Yes. I think some Spike fans will be disappointed to hear he's not getting his own series, but I think they should be happy to hear that he'll be getting an appropriate and significant role in Buffy's book. And dealing with more than just the girl herself.
Could you give us a hint of what to expect between Buffy and Spike in season nine?
Scott: Sorry, no ... I know this is one of the things people most want to know, but that's because it's worth waiting for.
I'm a Spike girl, and he is "my guy". Last summer Mr Whedon said that Spike is his most developed character. Spike wasn't around enough (for me) in season 8 and I read that he will now be around Buffy. I would like to know about his arc, meaning I don't want to see him regressing but I want him to become even more of a man of his own, somebody that makes us proud. So what about his journey in season 9? Will he continue making us proud and developping even more? Or should we expect dark sides of his character coming back and maybe regressing him to previous or not so good stages?
Scott: As with everyone, there'll probably be a bit of a mix, of him making his fans proud, and of him being an imperfect character with failings that help to define him. Maybe being around Buffy will cause him to regress a little bit, or maybe he'll keep growing despite her being back in his face.
And from Herocomplex :

JP: So, any particular characters, beside the main ones, that we can expect to see? Any favorites for you?
Andrew Chambliss: There are a couple that I can’t mention cause I don’t want to give away any big reveals that are coming down the line. At the end of the day, I’m just excited to write Buffy and where she is in her journey as a character coming off Season 8 where she was running this huge army and it literally was “the world’s going to end.” She ends the season potentially saving the world but destroying magic. She always thought she was going to die, but now she has to answer all of these questions that hit when you normally enter your 20s. Who am I? What am I going to do? Will I be a slayer all of my life? At the same time, you have Willow facing similar questions. She’s been cut off from magic, so how much of her identity was wrapped up in being a witch? It’s interesting. … I’m discovering Buffy as a writer while she is on this path of trying to figure out who she is. Also excited to be writing Spike. He’s definitely a character that I’ve enjoyed.
Andrew Chambliss seems to be a fan of Buffy and Spike, it's nice to know
🙂 In another interview, he said that season 6 is his favourite season, and the Buffy & Spike relationship is the first thing he mentions as something he liked. He will be the co-writer of season 9 with Joss, so I think that's a good thing for Buffy and Spike (the characters
and their relationship). We'll see...
