We know that Spike will be in Buffy's magazine for Season 9, so they are obviously going to have some sort of relationship, whether it be just as fighting buddies, friends, best buds and drinking companions, lovers, or something else that completely defies description. So, what do you think, given what we know at this time, that relationship will actually be? And just to be sure that you know what I'm asking, this is what you actually think will take place, not just what you WISH would happen.

Personally, I think that the "best buds and drinking companions" category just might be what we see. If, as seems to be the case from what we saw in #40 holds true, basically neither the Slayer Army nor the Scoobies are going to be working on a full time basis, so Spike is quite likely to be the single member of the old Sunnydale gang that Buffy sees on a regular basis, and, knowing Spike, the suggestion of a few cold ones to unwind after a hard night of patrolling is pretty much a given. It's been long enough since "Beer Bad" for Buffy to be pretty much over those bad memories. If Season 9 is supposed to be more about the relationships and interaction, a quiet corner in an uncrowded bar might just provide the perfect setting.

Whether or not Buffy and Spike ever become lovers this season, I'm not really as concerned about as I am that they become closer friends. That doesn't mean that I don't hope "it" happens, of course. I just want it to be under better circumstances and with better results than the last time.

I think Spike will be there to pick her up from where she left off in S8. With many of the slayers hating her for the events of Twilight and obviously with one of the most important people in Buffy's life gone, I think he'll be there in an ally/friend capacity to keep her from wallowing too much maybe.

I honestly don't expect them to spend that much time together. Not after the announcement that Dru and Illyria will feature. They are two characters directly tied to Spike and his story, and in lieu of what is happening his IDW miniseries, I expect his story to focus on them.

I'm sure they will talk and continue a friendship of sorts, I just don't know how close it will really be. Buffy kept him at arms length in 40, refusing to let him into her room or share her feelings with him. She was very closed off. I don't expect to see a massive change in that behaviour. At least not for quite some time.

I think (and hope) that they'll stay snarking buddies -- and a lot of UST will be emanating from their interactions.

(Joss had turned me into a paranoiac: I dread sex between my favorite characters, because the punishment will be terrible. I'd better have Spuffy sex in fanfiction. Hopefully season 9 will be a great source of inspiration for ficwriters. 🙂

I think they'll be spending a lot of time together in a mutual mission type situation (and I don't mean that in a sex way either😉) - I think that they will be actively working together against whom ever is the Big Bad and it will be good. I don't think Dru and Illyria will be constant features of the book - just guesties in a limited number of issues.

Well, technically, it was Xander and Dawn's apartment, not hers, and she might have not invited him in out of respect for their privacy. Quite possibly, also, being only a guest there, not the permanent resident, she wasn't able to invite him in. That has held true throughout both series with one single exception, the case of Andrew, supposedly a guest in the fake Buffy's apartment in Rome, invited Spike and Angel in. With what we know now about that situation, it becomes quite possible that was actually his apartment with pseudo-Buffy being the actual guest.

Anyhow, as for the invitation thing, in Season 9, we might see Spike as a welcome guest in Buffy's own apartment, if we don't see her moving into Spike's ship with her own cabin. Come to think of it, that ship would make a great platform of operations for a Slayer and a select group of fighters to patrol on a world wide, or even interdimensional, scale. Just imagine Spike and Buffy having a Mal/Inara relationship aboard their own version of "Serenity." Going even further, imagine Dru as River, the mentally challenged psychic super soldier; Xander and Dawn as Wash and Cloe, the married couple; Willow as Book, the intellectual and spiritual leader; Illyria as Jayne, the muscle; and Andrew as the doctor)

(Joss, if you're reading this, feel free to use it, no royalties expected.)

Did you hear what Allie said recently about Spike/Buffy S9? Something about how he won't spoil it for us, "it's worth waiting for."

Sounds promising, eh?

What do I think will take place? What will their relationship be? I agree wihth you. Spike and Buffy have been to Hell and back together, they've been each other's enemies, allies, friends, and lovers - where else is there to go? I believe that they will continue to play this little dance that they've always done - where they pretend to be "just friends" when it's clear they have feelings for each other. Why? Because both are to scared to risk the friendship they'd recently ressurected.

Yet, there will always be a fire between them. I can definitely see a kiss happening, maybe after a little to much to drink one night. We know that Buffy dreams of kissing him - but he'll never make the first move. From what we've seen, he's clearly treading lightly around her. He's probably enjoying the friendship they finally have again and scared of giving her the wrong impression.

Regardless if they become lovers again, Spike will remain an important part of her life. He's her friend, her counterpart, and he'll always have her back.

I think the Spuffy relationship is dead, I feel it's obvious they don't belong together (oh, God, I think I might regret saying that lol). I love both Spike and Buffy, just not in a relationship. I expect them to become a strong team though, He will be Buffy's crime fighting friend

I would be quite happy with that. 🙂

Spuffy doesn't interest me at all. That's not to say it can't be good, but it just doesn't interest me. I think their romantic relationship should be over but they could make a good team.

The motion comic is freaking epic. That's how I got the first ten issues... now I'm just reading it when I can get it from the local library (which is now under renovations, grrr...)

I don't ship Spike/Buffy, and never will, but I will certainly respect their relationship if it is built on mutual respect verse mutual destruction. That being said, I think that Spike and Buffy will act as more of a crime fighting team than anything else right now. Yes it's true that Buffy desires Spike, but I hope that she's learned enough to know that jumping into bed with him at the start of season 9 would be a bad idea. As for how Spike feels, I think he'd be content to act as Buffy's friend for now, since that's what she needs most. Plus if Illyria and Dru are going to be hanging around, he will have some inter conflict that can't be hand waved away.

Anyone know where I can read season 8 & 9 online? Cause I haven't read them yet and I know nothing about them.

Check out your local library for season 8- that's how I started reading them. Although the TPBs (trade paperbacks) are not very expensive on Amazon. Season 9 won't be out until the fall (right?).

I said this on a season 8 thread, but in some ways I hope for Spike's sake that he and Buffy don't get that involved. Buffy's guys didn't fare well in season 8: Angel turned into Twilight (death & destruced ensued), Riley was practically ready to leave his life with Sam in order to help Buffy. What would Buffy-love do to Spike?

I agree, WA. I think this is probably the more likely way we'll see Spike and Buffy "together". And that is fine... I always thought they were better together when we saw the moments of their friendship shining through, like the time Spike took her out drinking and playing kitten poker.

aww I love that episode!!
I don't see anything bad if it was Buffy and Spike having a real, mature, romantic relationship in season 9. It seems to me that Bangels think we Spuffies liked the destructive relationship they had in season 6. But as much as I find them more interesting in season 6 than the Bangelness in season 3, I don't wish them that (season 6 relationship) again. However, if it was a romantic, yet not boring and cheesy relationship, I think that would be great for them together idea in season 9. I just don't see anything wrong with that. Yes, they're great as friends, as buddies, like we saw in season 7. That was very nice to watch. But add it a little romance, it would be really great and I would love to see that!

I think Buffy and Spike should just stay friends in season 9, and hopefully Spike won't regress to the yes-man he was in season 7. The one pet peeve I have with their relationship is Spike tends to insult anyone who doesn't agree with Buffy like he did in season 7, I hope he can grow from that. It also would be nice to have him more of his own person and not regress back to who he was in season 7 considering his progress iin ATS, he's much better off as his own man I think. It would be nice for Spike to show sympathy to the people Buffy hurt as a result of the betrayal, issue#40 kinda worries me he might be the character used to gloss over the betrayal when the said ripples start coming back at Buffy through others that she hurt, issue#40 just left me with the feeling Spike was trying to be sympathetic to Buffy but he also tended to be insulting to anyone who wouldn't agree with Buffy's actions. Maybe I'm in the minority but Spike gets on my nerves when he says he's the only watching her back or when he's trying to be supportive to Buffy and insults others in the process.

Well for me at least I wasn't very impressed with how Buffy's attitude towards Spike was handled, or vice versa for that matter, so I'm not holding my breath for any meaningful communication between these two. Sad I know. 🙁

For the moment, I'm really optimistic about what we could expect for them in season 9. They have a lot of stuff they need to fix, and the romantic feelings are still there for both Buffy and Spike (even if it's less obvious in Spike's side) in my opinion. And the way they left each other in Chosen was all about romance, I don't think they can forget that like if nothing happened... Buffy's fantasy in #37 was definitely a set up for a future development in my opinion (like the moment where Spike thinks she's distracted by thoughts about Angel, whereas she's fantasizing about *him*), and we know that Spike will definitely be a part of her life in season 9, according to Andrew Chambliss, the new writer. I really loved the way they wrote them and their relationship in season 8. "Look how much I don't care about you" 😛 Typical and perfectly in character. Buffy being sarcastic, angry and defensive is exactly the proof that she does care about him. If she wasn't hurt by his attitude (the fact that he didn't tell her he was back), she wouldn't act like that. In season 8 ? She's everything but indifferent. And their scene in #40 ? Priceless. I expect to see more tension and more development. I don't think they will jump into a romantic relationship in season 9 (mostly because I think Buffy needs to find herself first), but they will be side by side I think, and well, knowing them, I think we'll get a lot of great scenes. The kind of scenes where there's a lot more under the surface. And romance has a lot of chance to be a part of it. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's how I feel for the moment.

Some references to Spuffy in Q/A & Interviews, concerning the season 9 :

From a Buffyfest interview :

What about a character that you're disappointed you won't get to write with Giles dead, Spike off in his Bug ship and Angel and Faith moving over to the Angel title?
Andrew Chambliss:
Of course, I'm disappointed that I won't get to write Giles. If I learned anything from writing Adelle on Dollhouse, it's that British characters are fun to write. Maybe it's because you can add completely unnecessary letters to their dialogue, in words like “colour” or “aluminium”. Speaking of British accents, I can safely say that Spike won't be on his bug ship for very long. He'll definitely be a part of Buffy's Season 9 life.

From a Q/A in another forum :

All the announcements today were really exciting! I'm happy to hear Spike will be in season 9. Will he be having much interaction with characters other than Buffy?

Scott:
Yes. I think some Spike fans will be disappointed to hear he's not getting his own series, but I think they should be happy to hear that he'll be getting an appropriate and significant role in Buffy's book. And dealing with more than just the girl herself.

Could you give us a hint of what to expect between Buffy and Spike in season nine?

Scott:
Sorry, no ... I know this is one of the things people most want to know, but that's because it's worth waiting for.

I'm a Spike girl, and he is "my guy". Last summer Mr Whedon said that Spike is his most developed character. Spike wasn't around enough (for me) in season 8 and I read that he will now be around Buffy. I would like to know about his arc, meaning I don't want to see him regressing but I want him to become even more of a man of his own, somebody that makes us proud. So what about his journey in season 9? Will he continue making us proud and developping even more? Or should we expect dark sides of his character coming back and maybe regressing him to previous or not so good stages?

Scott:
As with everyone, there'll probably be a bit of a mix, of him making his fans proud, and of him being an imperfect character with failings that help to define him. Maybe being around Buffy will cause him to regress a little bit, or maybe he'll keep growing despite her being back in his face.

And from Herocomplex : http://herocomplex.latimes.com/2011/04/05/buffy-season-9-writer-hails-from-another-vampire-camp/

JP: So, any particular characters, beside the main ones, that we can expect to see? Any favorites for you?

Andrew Chambliss:
There are a couple that I can’t mention cause I don’t want to give away any big reveals that are coming down the line. At the end of the day, I’m just excited to write Buffy and where she is in her journey as a character coming off Season 8 where she was running this huge army and it literally was “the world’s going to end.” She ends the season potentially saving the world but destroying magic. She always thought she was going to die, but now she has to answer all of these questions that hit when you normally enter your 20s. Who am I? What am I going to do? Will I be a slayer all of my life? At the same time, you have Willow facing similar questions. She’s been cut off from magic, so how much of her identity was wrapped up in being a witch? It’s interesting. … I’m discovering Buffy as a writer while she is on this path of trying to figure out who she is. Also excited to be writing Spike. He’s definitely a character that I’ve enjoyed.

Andrew Chambliss seems to be a fan of Buffy and Spike, it's nice to know 🙂 In another interview, he said that season 6 is his favourite season, and the Buffy & Spike relationship is the first thing he mentions as something he liked. He will be the co-writer of season 9 with Joss, so I think that's a good thing for Buffy and Spike (the characters and their relationship). We'll see...

Really enjoyed your post, and thanks so much for the quotes! You made my day as a Spuffy fan!
I balk at the idea of Spuffy in S9. Its setup is far, far too similar to that of S6 for my liking. Even Joss self-references it with the jab at clinical depression in 40. He's already laid the groundwork for the dependence with Spike knowing something important about her that no one else does.

Buffy is lost in life, wandering through a world she has no place or direction in, has a crappy job just to pay the rent, carrying around a lot of guilt and anger and her only friend is Spike. S6 all over again there.

Spike is her confidant again and the only one she can trust because he knows the truth about what happened with Twilight and isn't in England or crazy.

Sex sells. There will be sex in S9 whether it makes sense or not. Whether it's Buffy and Spike or Buffy and Hunky Demon, which will drive a wedge between them, there's going to be some. Joss's proclivities when it comes to sex with characters who aren't fanboy avatars are well established. It won't end well.

I don't have high hopes for good Spuffy in S9, especially since there is going to be a S10. Allie can say what he wants. He also said their relationship would be respected in Last Gleaming. Maybe I'll be proven wrong, but I don't see much positivity in the setup for S9 we saw in issue 40.

haven't read the issue in a while, but doesn't Buffy explicitly say that she's *not* clinically depressed this time?
