Buffy And Spike In Season 9

I balk at the idea of Spuffy in S9. Its setup is far, far too similar to that of S6 for my liking. Even Joss self-references it with the jab at clinical depression in 40. He's already laid the groundwork for the dependence with Spike knowing something important about her that no one else does.

Buffy is lost in life, wandering through a world she has no place or direction in, has a crappy job just to pay the rent, carrying around a lot of guilt and anger and her only friend is Spike. S6 all over again there.

Spike is her confidant again and the only one she can trust because he knows the truth about what happened with Twilight and isn't in England or crazy.

Sex sells. There will be sex in S9 whether it makes sense or not. Whether it's Buffy and Spike or Buffy and Hunky Demon, which will drive a wedge between them, there's going to be some. Joss's proclivities when it comes to sex with characters who aren't fanboy avatars are well established. It won't end well.

I don't have high hopes for good Spuffy in S9, especially since there is going to be a S10. Allie can say what he wants. He also said their relationship would be respected in Last Gleaming. Maybe I'll be proven wrong, but I don't see much positivity in the setup for S9 we saw in issue 40.

I really really doubt it'll be like Spuffy of season 6. Buffy and Spike wouldn't go there again, the writers wouldn't go there again, and Joss wouldn't go there again. Season 6 Spuffy is in a whole other place than season 9's, especially after season 7 and all of the progression they made then.

The writer's weren't too concerned about all the character progression of Buffy and Angel when they threw all that into the mix. The weren't concerned that the sex=destruction metaphor was done numerous times before. They weren't concerned about any of it. It doesn't appear they're very concerned that the supposed stage of Buffy's life had already been covered in S6. They even made subtle jabs in the story about history lessons and high school and now they're making subtle jabs about depression.

So I don't think it's very far-fetched they'd rehash an old idea and eliminate anything the series characters learned from those events given the albeit small indications that that's what they're going to do. Could be wrong, but I think it's highly likely.

I agree with most of it. But I still doubt they'll do it to Spuffy since a whole season (6) was built around that arc. If they will though, that proves poor writing. It can happen, I just doubt it. It seems to me somehow, that they couldn't think what to do next with Bangel, especially after all that has happened lately. I could be wrong, sorry to the Bangels, for my opinion. Spuffy's story doesn't seem to be stuck though. There is more to do and tell so they wouldn't go back to what they've already done with them. Again, I could be wrong. But that's how I see it.

I think it is sort of stuck. Admittedly I'm adding my own pessimistic view of known Joss tropes here, but Buffy happy in a relationship for longer than 2 episodes? Not gonna happen, IMO. Maybe some buddy-buddy stuff for the first 2-3 arcs then something will happen and it'll fall apart. There is a lot going on--the not!slayers (which I'd bet a house will be led by Satsu) and so on--so they could span it out all through S9 and deal with it in S10.

I have no expectations about Buffy being happy with Spike for the rest of the show (or, comics....), not from season 9 anyways. Joss wouldn't let that happen so easily. I know. However, that doesn't mean Buffy and Spike can't have a couple of dates, have a short period of time together romantically, before, you know, something happens and they break up. But that's good for me too. That doesn't mean though that by the end of the series, say if it happens to end in season 10, they won't be together, that they won't end up together. Long shot, but still, if it's the end of the series, why can't Buffy be happy (finally). I don't believe they will end up together and stay together all throught season 9 and 10. It can happen at the ending, but not now. But again, they can date, without it being season 6 kind of "dating". I don't see them stuck at all, not like Buffy and Angel's story. There's a lot more that can happen to Buffy and Spike. Things they haven't done yet, feelings that weren't fulfilled yet, kinds of relationship that they haven't experienced yet. There's still a lot that can happen, and I believe will happen. It can happen in season 9, and it can happen in season 10, and it can happen in the last episode ever.

I think they'll be spending a lot of time together in a mutual mission type situation (and I don't mean that in a sex way either😉) - I think that they will be actively working together against whom ever is the Big Bad and it will be good. I don't think Dru and Illyria will be constant features of the book - just guesties in a limited number of issues.

I think you are right - I would very much like them to become equals in a working relationship. I believe that after the events of BS8 - any kind of romantic treatment would be inappropriate - too much destruction, deaths and trauma have taken place in season 8.

Buffy, IMO, really needs time to get her head and emotional life together. All the misery that happened from the Space Frak is connected to trauma from her earlier life that has never been resolved. This is the season that the character has really got to make changes in her life - how she sees herself and how being a slayer can be integrated into Buffy the woman, Buffy the Slayer and Buffy a leader.

One thing that gives me hope for the coming season is that Joss Whedon and Andrew Chambliss apparently like powerful drama and exploration of the dark side of characters - most viewers who I know that liked Season 6 also love powerful drama. Season 6 is my favorite of all the series followed by the resolution of the Buffy-Spike arc in Season 7.

I could definitely see it in Season 10, but I was trying to keep it to Season 9.

It's the setup that makes me think there won't be any Spuffy in the romance sense or if there is, it'll be bad. I don't see Joss writing a story between someone and their only power base and it turning out well. Also to add my own wants to the mix, I don't want a story like that either.

I think the best thing I'd want, is not a romantic relationship in season 9 where they most possibly break up or die, but save it for season 10 - for the end. Where Buffy ends up with Spike and there is no danger of something bad to happen (at least we wouldn't see it, because the show ends there). That's the best way I can see it happen.

I don't see Buffy ending up with Spike at the end. At best I'd hope for another Chosen-type open ending.

I'm extremely wary about it given Season 8 where Joss threw all characterization and logic out the window just to drive home what was the original intent of the B/A relationship; a cautionary tale.

I think it's important for Spuffy fans to remember they're in the same boat. Spike and Buffy were never originally meant to be seen as a healthy relationship. He might use S9 to bury that ship as well. Going back to earlier posts, the premise for their relationship is a little too similar. I think it's a mistake to believe we're above it because Buffy's fantasy in issue 37 is every bit of a jab at Spuffies as the Bella speak to Angel in 36.

Ultimately, if Buffy's story ever does play out to an actual conclusion, I don't see Buffy ending up with either Angel or Spike, or any other current member of the cast. I think that, eventually, if it went that far, would opt for a normal family, with children and, most importantly, someone who she can grow old with, not some immortal vampire (and don't drag that Shanshu thing out again. It never was anything but a way for the Powers and the Senior Partners to manipulate Angel into doing whatever they wanted him to do, and even if that weren't true, with no more magic, magic prophesies no longer apply)

That isn't to say that Buffy doesn't love both vampires, equally, but in different ways. She does and always will. It's just that, eventually, she is going to come to the realization that there's no happy future with someone who's eventually going to wind up looking like your grandson. And, once she actually faces that fact, Prince Charming will miraculously show up.

If we're talking Joss'-decision wise, no, she wouldn't end up with anyone. I simply stated some facts, among the fact that this is what I want to happen, and what I think can happen until the ending where she'll probably choose no one.

No matter how hectic and non romantic the plot is now, Buffy will have to choose by the end of the comic series. It's just a too important aspect of the show to gloss over, and whether she'll choose her soulmate, Angel, or go the Dawson's route and have her end up with the underdog, we'll just have to wait to see.

Hmm... Interesting points.

I'm a long time Spuffy fan but I believe that they won't end up together in the end...especially if Joss has any say in the matter...which is everything! LOL.

He'll probably leave it open ended or something as cruel (i.e. that one scene in Fray with a slayer fighting alone which ended with all the demons and magic disappearing for decades)

But at least I can always fall back on my fanfiction.

I think in Season 9, Spike will be the only contact Buffy will have in terms of fighting the good fight cuz Spike is never one to just sit there and do nothing so he'll go to Buffy with some info or to check on her every once in a while but will remain apart since he wants to be his own man outside of Buffy and Angel's shadow.

I really wish Spike had his own book; even if it meant less interaction in Buffy.
Thing is Whedon is not a shipper type so to speaks, despite romance etc playing such big part in the TV series. In the comics, well to my mind not so much. In season 8 he almost seemed to go out of his way to destroy certain character/pairings and so I don't have any high hopes for poor Buffys love life If thats the way he wants to plays things.

i feel so torn over this because i think this is the most likely relationship at the moment. I think Buffy was finally ready to be with Spike by the end of season 7..season 8 was more setting the ground work to show how he is still there when she needs him..and i can see it becoming more by late season 9..and this makes me happy as I am a self confessed spuffy fan.

the down side to this is I will be ecstatic for the few issues they are happy then be mortified when Spike is horribley killed (as is the Buffy way) 🙁

I wholeheartedly agree that, if there had been a televised Season 8, and Spike hadn't moved over to "Angel," we would have seen Buffy and Spike in a real, undeniable even to the Bangels, full fledged romantic relationship. (And I'm not giving up hope for Season 9 and/or Season 10)

And as for any sort of horrible death is concerned, we're talking COMIC BOOKS here. The hero ALWAYS comes back. Superman, Batman, the entire Blackhawk team, Hal Jordan... Ol' Broody is gonna be heckled, annoyed, mocked, and generally pestered by Blondie Bear for a long time to come (that's whenever Spike can take time away from making out with his Slayer of course. Guy's gotta have his priorities straight, after all)

Wow I never realised how much of a shipper you were! Buffy loves Spike and Angel equally? Please?! She pities spike. She had a sexual ralationship with him when she was in self destruct mode and they became close friends in s7. I really hate these comics to be honest. I wish they all died in not fade away. They completely bastardised 5 years of angel in season 8 and yet i felt compelled to read it as it was 'official' however nothing like either of the series, and the characterisation was so poor. Unsurprising as the main writer hadnt even watched Angel.....

Buffy and Spike, lying in a bug ship; S H A G G I N G.

That about covers the first arc of the season I think.

😀
