I KNOW the show is called "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", the main character being, of course, Buffy, hence the title. But I think, and I may be going out on a limb here, but I think some people would agree, that the supporting cast are what holds the show together. If it was JUST Buffy, it wouldn't be much of a TV show, now would it? Don't get me wrong, Sarah Michelle Gellar does an outstanding job, Alyson Hannigan, Nick Brendon, Anthony Stewart Head and all the rest of the cast do as well, if not better. I'm not bringing down any characters. All I'm trying to get across is that the little parts, Willow, Xander, Giles, they are what MAKE the show the one we all love to watch.

BUT"¦I was watching a Season 2 episode, when I noticed "Hey, they never celebrate anyone's birthday but Buffy's." After Willow so sadly rejects Oz's request to go on a date with her, I felt so bad for her. And in season six, when Amy says "Willow, it's your birthday" and she's like "No, it's not"¦" and then right away thinks of Buffy's birthday.

All I'm really trying to get at here is that the rest of the cast seems a bit"¦under appreciated. Though there are a few special episodes that focus on each character {The Zeppo, Dopplegangland} and each character has their own story"¦well"¦I realise this was a complete waste writing this now. I just was incredibly angry that it's ALL about BUFFY"¦I never even really liked the Buffy character. Of course, this is my opinion, but she seemed dull to me. Only in S6 did she really shine. Her lengthy speeches were annoying, and sometimes, I wanted to hit her, like Ford did in "Lie To Meâ"¦*sigh* oh well"¦

Maybe it's just me...probably...

I agree with you, i always did wonder why they never had anyone else birthday's except buffys. It's true Buffy probably be dead without Xander..
Yeh sometimes I wanted to hit her aswel.. specially in S7..

I disagree. Granted, the supporting characters have provided much to the show. But to me, the character of Buffy Summers was the backbone of the series - and Sarah Michelle Gellar's portrayal of the role. She held it together. The others were great additions.

Don't mean to get anyone mad but I think wht tour saying is true. Yes the show was about buffy. But I really don't think thats what hekd it toghter. Frist off if you want to say how Buffy would be dead if it werenot For this person the list would be pretty long. I Don't want to say I dislike Buffy but she was never the best. Sara is a great actor but she did not hold the show. Thay killd he off in the gift and people still wached S6. Also Buffy tried to kill herself a lot in S6. if it were not for Spike she porb would be dead.

I agree with you totally. I mean I guess they could have mentioned occasionly that it was someones elses birthday as a side issue, but there are only so many episodes in a season so devoting one to the main char's birthday is one thing but supporting chars... I don't think so.

I agree on the birthday thing. Or, I think they could have celebrated Willow's or Xander's birthdays at least once.. Not that it is a big deal.

Of course the supporting characters are really important, it would be a very boring show if there was just one big character, and I do agree that Willow, Xander, Giles and the others are really great characters, I surtainly wouldn't like it if none of them where there.
But the show is about Buffy, I don't think it's weird that her birthday (or anything else) is more important than the others'. I think she is more important than the other characters, not cause I like her better (cause I don't like her that much), but cause it's her show and she is "the" Slayer.. and there wouldn't be a show without her, at all.

So although I would have loved it if the other characters had got more attention in the show, I don't think it's wrong the way it was done..

I kinda agree with both sides of this one. More so with Lady Lavinia though. It's called Buffy, because she WAS the focus of the show. It was SUPPOSED to be that way. Yea the others were great additions, and I agree they could have mentioned birthdays and things with them, but Buffy is what the show is supposed to be all about. You don't have to like her, but the show was about her and about her life as the slayer.

Don't forget that Tara had a birthday celebration in 5.06 Family.

Although it would've been nice to see some other parties, there isn't really any other side plots to go with the birthday one, unlike Buffy's. All of her birthdays had a bad part (17th bday = angelus, 18th bday = loss of powers, nearly killed, 19th bday = giles turned into a demon, 20th bday = dawn found out she was the key, a whole can of worms there, 21st bday = locked in the house by Halfrek), and most of those had to do with Buffy's Slayer-ness. Honestly, what could they do to make an entire episode about Xander's birthday interesting? Vampires arrive, ask to be invited in, and THEN go on a killing spree? Not very interesting. Sure, there could be something interesting with a Willow birthday with the whole Wicca part, but honestly, what could there be? A demon summoned? Spell gone wrong? I don't think it'd be as interesting.

Also, it IS called Buffy the Vampire Slayer, so why wouldn't it be about Buffy? And I do agree the characters are underrated, but oh well. They obviously aren't to us since we're discussing this

I never said that Buffy was not important to the show, because, yeah, the show is BUFFY the Vampire Slayer, not Willow the Wicca or Xander the...uh...well..you get what I mean.

Buffy's birthdays did hold importance, yes, like Angel going ARG and her losing her powers and such, but those episode could have easily have goen on without it being her birthday. And I never said having her birthday was a bad thing either. Without Buffy being shown as an important character would be a waste of film. Buffy is the backbone of the series, she is what the show is, but without the rest of the cast, nothing would happen. She would have never made love to Angel, never had to kill him. She would have never gotten killed if it weren't for Dawn...but here I am, rambling on. I'm not saying any characters are more important than the others. I'm just saying that I feel the rest of the cast didn't get as much recognition as they deserved.

Don't you trust Joss after all these years? He'd bring us something to chew on for a while...and there was an entire episode on Xander, it can't be THAT hard to write about him. I'm not bringing your point down now, hun, just stating my opinion. :dog2:

{OH and mods, I'm not sure if this is in teh right place, since its branching off frmo Buffy to all seasons. Please, could you move it if it's wrong. Thanks. {of course you'll move it if it is...its your jobs...*sigh* im too tired to be on right now...heres me babblign away...lalala}

I agree that it couldn't have been that hard to make a Xander's birthday episode (for example), of course it wouldn't have been.. And I would have liked it if they did.. But I just never felt that Xander or Willow got too little attention (except for in season 7). (Ok that isn't true, from time to time I used to wish the show was just about Willow but.. it's not like I really think it should be like that.)

Buffy is what truly brought the show together and I think she could have carried her own show.

I've been saying for a while that the Scoobs in certain ways held her back...

Watch the series closely and you'll realize something, from season three onward the supporting cast became more important. That's because after 'Becoming Parts 1 and 2' what more could be said about Buffy? She sent the love of her life to hell; that's hard to top.

Even though the show started to give the supporting characters more and more arcs, Buffy was still the central focus and the glue of the show.

If the supporting cast was more important, couldn't they have left her dead in Bargaining? No, because even though it may show Willow or Xander or Giles or Dawn or Anya, in the end, it really is all about Buffy's journey. Plus she is the title character and that garners some screen time.

As much as I like the Scoobs and their storylines, it is comprehendible that there could have been a show entirely devoted to Buffy, something along the lines of the Wishverse.

Her friends strengthened her in some ways, but maybe without them she could have found the independence that other slayers had and still been a great slayer who lived a long time.

But in the end, being with the Scoobs was the better way to go 🙂
