Buffy Canon Comic Book (Season Eight): Spoilers

I've not read this entire thread cause, well its not an area i'm interested in, BUT i thought i'd tell you something I read in Buffy Mag today Incase its not been said....if it has, forgive me.

Joss Whedon apparently said on WizardUniverse.com that there really aren't any plans for any TV spin offs or Movies SO characters that he purposefully held back from the Shows are going to be introduced in this coming season.
They were held back from the show because he had hoped to add them to future films for the purposes of Spin Offs.

This suggests to me that because he can't get them on TV, there is a possibility he is planning Spin Off comics for these characters if he has so many ideas for them.

When people talk movie right now, they talk "based on the tv series". What if somewhere down the road studios start talking a Buffyverse movie based on the comics?

Joss should create his own comics company.

I think we all have accepted the reality that it will be a very long time (if ever) before we see any new televised slayerverse adventures so I really hope that all the characters can be explored in the canon comic series.

I'm a little worried that certain characters are going to be missed out becuase they are tied up over at IDW (Angel, Spike, Illyria and so on) but until the Buffy season 8 comics are done then I guess it doesn't matter. Assuming that it is meant to happen alongside Angel season 5 then we already know what is going on over in LA.

Fingers crossed that by the time the Buffy story catches up with Not Fade Away the rights for Angel comic books will have passed back to Dark Horse.
 
Something to think about. If Joss had his own comics company Buffy, Angel, and Serenity comics would all be canon.

Works for me. It would also help to avoid some of the awful Buffy and Angel comics I've suffered over the years.

Whatcha guys think? It looks very retro"”almost art nouveau, art deco, pulpy magazine cover stuff. Willow looks like she's decked out in pancake makeup, getting ready for her silent movie debut, heh. I dunno, it's weird, but strangely appealing to me.
 
I like Buffy and Xander, Willow is alright, but Dawn looks like those stupid little similes you get on sites, you know the one that are the same person in like 50 different cloths but in the same stance, anyone know what I mean?
 
Yeah, Georges was right when he said he doesn't know how to draw Dawn yet. Hopefully he'll get her down at some point.
 
I don't know. I get what you're saying - the retro look, and all. I like it at first glance. He's really got their looks down, but there seems to be a danger, especially in the ones below, of going with too much of a video game feel, or something. Or maybe it's what BEG is getting at. Like an avatar.
 
Yeah, it's hard to tell from a promo like that. In a lot of modern comics, there's excessive airbrushing, blending of the skin tones. Kinda destroys the graphic effect.

Just so you guys know, these pieces of art they're posting are nifty, but they don't come close to what Georges is actually doing on the book. I've seen most of issue one and it's dynamic and exciting and the likenesses are great -- but not so slavishly accurate that it stops being a comic. Georges really gets the spirit of the piece (his nerd-cred is apparent to me) and walks the line between what was and what needs to follow really well. I'm having a blast writing this. And eventually I'll get to announce the writers who are working with me on this project... It gives me a happy. Just wait. Just you wait.

I don't know enough about Jeph Loeb to have an opinion about this, but...

JEPH LOEB TO WRITE BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER

Jeph Loeb will be writing an arc of Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 8, the new Dark Horse Comics series picking up from where the television show ended, The Continuum has learned.

Loeb remains exclusive with Marvel Comics, but will be allowed to work on the project.

Loeb is friends with Buffy creator Joss Whedon and at one time was was working with Whedon on development of a Buffy animated series for Fox Kids.

Buffy is scheduled to launch in March and will run 23-26 issues. Whedon is writing the first four issues and will also likely write the last arc. Loeb is one of several high-profile writers who will be contributing.

Georges Jeanty is drawing the first arc, with Jo Chen providing covers.

Also look for a Buffy Omnibus from Dark Horse next year.

Well I know he was working on the Buffy animated project, has something to do with Heroes, and has written comics before, but I've never actually read his comics. They're good, are they?
 
Well, I can only judge his Marvel work because I've read nothing of what he has done for DC. His series of "flashback" titles (Spider-Man: Blue, Daredevil: Yellow and Hulk: Gray) were fantastic, particularly the Daredevil one. The rest of his more regular Marvel work, including runs on X-Force and Fantastic Four, were also very good.

Unfortunately he seems to get judged a lot on his DC work which, according to popular opinion, isn't as good but not having read it I really cannot say. Maybe he just has more of a flare for Marvel characters?

But yeah, to answer your question, I think the work of his that I have read has been very good indeed.

It's not a precise likeness exactly, but she's got character, toughness. She looks older.

where does the comic find her?

Whedon had once discussed the idea of a spin-off TV series unofficially titled Slayer School, and he says the comic will include some of those ideas. ''There will be some new slayers that you'll meet, and by the second issue, you'll find out there are different camps across the world being run by various characters that fans will know. The comic focuses a lot on this new generation of slayers "” the problems they will face, and the problems they will cause.''

And yes, Buffy fans, the supporting cast "” the Scooby Gang! "” will factor into the epic as well. ''All the old pals, getting wacky! I'm bringing them in slowly, because there's a lot. Remember, I wrote Serenity,'' says Whedon, citing his feature film spin-off of his TV series Firefly. ''I had to introduce 10 people in two minutes. I'm not doing that again. I'd like to give everyone the entrance they deserve. Over the course of my four-issue arc, you'll get a sense of where most of our major supporting characters are now.''

How's Xander doing with his one eye? ''He's still got one, and if he can hold onto that one, he's golden. '' Will he be dealing with the ramifications of the death in the series finale of gal pal Anya? ''Well, yes, but not in the way you think. It is not the next day. A lot of time has passed for the fans, a lot of time has passed for me, and you can't pretend that no time has passed for the characters. We're keeping with the original mandate of the series: The audience has to identify with the characters. And time has passed. So we find them anew and have to relearn them. Buffy is in an odd place at a different part of her life. It's like we're sitting down to chat for the first time in a long while. There's a lot to catch up on.''
