Buffy cleared of all murder charges - how?

In early season 3, Buffy's mom tells her that she's been cleared of all murder charges for Kendra's death. So how did that happen, exactly? It's not like the sunnydale police found the real killer, who (a) was a vampire and (b) left the continent. So did they just believe Buffy's mother saying 'my daughter didn't do it', even though she couldn't explain anything about Buffy's activities to them? They didn't find any other suspects, presumably. So why did they dismiss the charges exactly?
 
No proof that she did do it? Testimony from Xander, Willow, Giles, etc. saying she wasn't even there when it happened? That's my guess.
 
Plus the Sunnydale PD were aware of Vampires and I am sure that an autopsy would have confirmed how she died.

What doesn't make sense is that the Mayor lets this happen.

Surely it is better for him to pin the murder on Buffy (which with his resources, he could do) and keep her out of the way for his Ascension!

I'm not so sure of that. After all, she didn't die by the classic vamp-biting, her throat was slit. That might have been caused by a weapon of some kind, and with all of these weapons in the library...

But I tend to agree with Blondie Bear with all the testimony from everyone.

I was going to say that too, I don't think the Police knew a thing. They were always so confused and useless..
i'm thinkin all kinds of csi stuff. none of her prints anywhere. by determine how long she was dead and then buffy's mom saying that she was elsewhere as well as the rest of the scoobies. i think they had enough evidence to clear her of the charges, it just wasn't elaborated upon.
 
It seems to me that the Sunnydale police wouldn't really do the most thorough investigation since people die there all the time. They were probably willing to accept the testimony of Buffy's friends because doing so would allow them time to grab a donut before the next murder.

I'm not sure about the autopsy thing. Drusilla didn't bite Kendra. She just cut her throat with her fingernail.

Good point about the Mayor.

Maybe they can tell the difference between a knfie cut and a not-knife cut? She was wearing red polish and Buffy wasn't. Some of it could have left residue.
 
now that i think of it buffys been questioned about 3 murders that guy that faith killed, ted and kendra so it must have been the scoobys evidence of some sort prooving her innocence other than that she would be locked up

LOL - excellent point. Yeah, that's the thing about Buffy - the police already suspect her for things, due to her "history of violence" that one of the officers mentions. I guess if some of the other injured people (Willow, et al.) testified on her behalf to the police that would help.
 
I think it was just a plot that needed to get resolved and they thought it would be funny saying, "Oh, by the way. You're not wanted for murder anymore." And her responding with, "Good. That was such a drag." Or something to that effect. I don't believe it actually has a definititive resolution.

Other than that, it must have been the rather lazy nature of the Sunnydale police force. They don't seem to investigate much, really.
What I also don't really understand is why the mayor let it happen. Maybe he hoped to get to Buffy himself, we all know that killing a slayer is quite a big ego boost in the circles he moved in.

The truth is as much as principle Snyder would have loved to see Buffy fall for the death of Kendra, The mayor is hell bent on keeping the knowledge of vampires and demons under the radar. So by Buffy taking the blame for the death of Kendra, They would have had to have a court case with official autopsy reports saying there were two bite marks on the victims kneck. Snyder's job is not only to be the principle of sunnydale high but to keep "supernatural" deaths as hush hush as possible. Hense the "gas leak" explination in Bad Eggs. Sunnydale wouldn't have benefited from Buffy being prosecuted. There's no way in hell that the mayor would take a chance on people finding out the truth about sunnydale. He doesn't want people knowing their living on a hell mouth.

Basically, It was a cover up. Done by the mayor and those who work for him. They called it an accident, Probably came up with a false suspect and poof closed case.
 
I agree, there was no proof that she had done it. They wouldn't even have had enough evidence for a court approved warrant to search her home. There were witnesses to state it hadn't been Buffy, no murder weapon, no motive, nothing.

Dru didn't bite her, she cut her throat.

Why didn't Dru bite her?
 
I was going to say they could examine the wound and find part of Drusilla's fingernail but then I wondered if vampires still leave prints or DNA or stuff :S I think its possibly just Willow etc saying that she wasn't the one responsible.
