Buffy Crossover [spoilers for issues #16+]

The preview pages are very tantalising. I love how Karl Moline's style fits right in with the previous artists. Too bad he's not doing any covers.
 
I love how the opening two page spread is a complete homage to Fray—with Buffy in Fray's original pose, falling down to the street. Sweet. Plus the "bad day" quip. Love it.

Looks like Karl has refined his style a little over the years, or he was trying to capture some of that Jeanty flavor. Plus, still the same inker and colorist. I want Moline on this book forever! Or just a tag team of Jeanty/Moline.

And I guess the scythe's look is irrelevent...

I noticed that too. Would one call the original more stylistic, or less refined? Either way I loved the way it flowed, handled the action, and delivered those big emotional punches.

That's a great preview though. Might be the best so far. The Dawn image is perfect. Ouch, I feel her pain. And I love his new Fray.

Spoil away...I don't mind...just gives me more of a reason to look forward to reading fray
I am so excited for this arc! It's gonna be awesome.

I also love Moline's artwork. He's gonna be great for these 4 issues.

I think I may actually prefer the more stylized, comic booky original. I can't tell yet. The shading, coloring is so airbrush perfect in Buffy 8. But that's not Moline's doing. Love the way he draws Buffy. This is gonna be a brilliant arc, no matter what.

Ok, love, love, LOVE the art work. (I feel bad saying that. I'm such a huge Georges fan)

I really loved Buffy's opening line. It's just a really cool thing to do.
 
So, on the issue of the scythe -- is it possible that there's more than one? In the preview pages it looks like Buffy's just teleported in -- look right above her head. It's all sparkly and stuff... Maybe when Will and Buf go to Manhattan they find a new scythe? I dunno, it's an idea.
 
This has nothing much to do with anything, but Fray would make a great Halloween costume. Note to self: next Halloween advise someone to go as Fray.

The Scythe: There is only one. Buffy apparently teleported into the future while holding hers, and bumped into Fray wielding the same Scythe, the one she later got in the comics.
Also, the differences between Fray's Scythe and the TV show's are now officially chalked up as artistic license. They are the exact same in these new pics, and presumably always have been.

The Sparkly: I'm pretty sure it's not sparkling over Buffy's head. More likely, they're lights from an incoming flying car emerging from the shadow of the building (see how they're symetrical).

Something just occurred to me: unless there are, in fact, two scythes, wouldn't the whole thing get into the paradox about an oblect occupying two places at the same time?

Why would that be a problem... normally it occupies a place at two different times, in fact it occupies different place on a lot of points on the time-dimension.
Hi, haven't read all the previous posts, but am I right to assume that the slayer who ends all magics and banishes all the demons is Buffy? Tichajt says it in 'Anywhere But Home' and now we're getting a Fray/Buffy crossover. Obviously, this (end of magics and demons) can't happen (Joss is planning season 9 already). So will it come down to Buffy travelling to the future, then coming back and changing the course of events leading up to 'Fray' and all the Frayverse will be changed? Sounds like a paradox, but then again every time-travelling story includes paradoxes.
 
On Buffy being the slayer we see in the final battle portrayed in Fray, that's one of the questions concerning the Buffy-Fray connection Joss will hopefully answer.

There's a lot of speculation on that one. Here's an old interview with David Fury.

JOZIC: I know a lot of people, especially after reading the Fray mini-series where Joss alludes to the last slayer before Fray come into the picture 200 years later, who thought that Buffy was going to die at the end of season 7. I asked Jane Espenson about it and she said that, as far as she knew, there wasn't any plan to have Buffy die - that it wasn't in Joss' plan.

FURY: No, and I'm not really sure that in the Fray series it indicated that the slayer did die.

JOZIC: There was a big portal, or something, and all the demons were coming out - very much like the end of Angel"¦

FURY: Right.

JOZIC: "¦but basically, the slayer pushed all the demons back and followed them in, sealing the thing off...

FURY: Interesting. I didn't remember that.

JOZIC: "¦and then there was no slayer for the next 200 years.

FURY: All I do remember was that there was a definitive story.

One can only suspect that that story has yet to be told for Buffy.

JOZIC: I know Joss also said that the slayer mythology had kind of grown over the year or two that he was writing Fray, so"¦

FURY: Yeah, the last season did require a lot of rethinking in terms of the potential slayers. You know, Joss' thing, and rightly so, is that he allowed the mythology to serve whatever story he wanted to tell so he didn't lock himself into a concrete mythology that would limit him. If he had a story he wanted to tell, he would adjust the mythology accordingly. A lot of people had their own ideas about how slayers were called, or if they knew they were going to be called, or if they go through life blindly or do they have watchers all their life like Kendra did or does a watcher come to them in the last second like it did for Buffy at the point where they were about to be called? Those are things which just kind of"¦whatever fits the correct way to tell a story of all girls and about all the potential they have to be heroes. So, yeah, he certainly adjusted it accordingly.

As far as Buffy [being] sealed up inside, it's very possible that Joss had the idea"¦well, I will say this. Very early in the season, the finale was going to be Buffy having to force the Hellmouth open. I don't remember it being so much about being in cave spaces, it might have been, but the point of it was they were trying so hard to keep the Hellmouth closed that she realized that the only way to do this is to open the Hellmouth. It was one of those ways of thinking that we were going to figure out later but to defeat them you have to open the Hellmouth wide. Probably at some point when Joss was writing Fray he thought that, when that happens, Willow casts this spell which creates sort of a vacuum effect and that Buffy would be sealed inside, but I think ultimately he decided that wasn't the way to end the series - for Buffy to be potentially dead.

JOZIC: He also never specified that the last slayer was Buffy"¦

FURY: I talked to him about it when he was writing Fray and I think that he always had the sense that it was Buffy. But the fact that it's left vague in the comics makes it open for interpretation. People can decide whatever they want and Joss can certainly decide it's not Buffy, but at the time he wrote it he believed that it was Buffy. That she was the last slayer before Fray was called. I think it gave Buffy a greater stake in the mythology to know that she was the last one before Fray was called.

But, like I said, that's a story yet to be told.

Anyone have a guess who the girl with the black hair is? Fray has pink at the end of hers?

I'm pretty sure that it's Willow, Buffy, Vi and Kennedy on the cover.

I would have thought Fray woulda been on the cover, after all, she is kinda vital to the arc =P

Me too but this cover looks like before Fray enters the picture, or technically before Buffy enters Fray's world.
 
It's gonna be cool seeing those guys tramping around the Big Apple...until the big time shift thing or whatever happens.
 
Okay, seeing Georges' cover has left me confused. Obviously, Fray's in this issue, as she's on the cover and in the preview pages...unless the preview pages are actually from #17? And Buffy gets transported to Fray's world at the end of #16?
 
Hey, Willow has an ipod. Haha. Good to know she's a Wicca who Thinkas. Gotta have a good soundtrack when you're off to battle Evil. Plus, I'm glad we get to see Vi again- she was one of the Potentials I actually liked. Haha.
