Nothing in the Buffyverse is canon without Joss.

But this isn't happening. Fox owns the copyrights and trademarks, and Fox works with Joss on Buffy-related projects. They know what would happen if they tried to take JW's creation away from him.

"Not gonna happen," Whedon told reporters in Hollywood on Wednesday. "Not gonna happen. Until I gather the press and make a public announcement myself that it's going to happen, never believe anything."
so im sure he has something up his sleeve. I bet we'll all be laugthing about this in a couple of years when weve all just come out of the cinema from joss's own buffy movie with the cast all there. yet incase this does go on im just saying im ready to do what it takes to stop this and i hope the other fans will join me in closing this hellmouth of bad ideas

Boycotts almost never work. The thing to do is to let the people involved... Fox, Vertigo, Joss, the Kuzuis... know in no uncertain terms how overwhelmingly negative the Buffy fandom's reception is to this notion, and how passionate about it we are. It may be that when they see the hornet's nest this has stirred up, Vertigo will decide it's not worth it. (And they'd be right, both subjectively and objectively.)

If that doesn't work, then it becomes a matter for Fox's legal department to deal with. Remember Fox's legal department? Warner Bros. does. (See: "Watchmen"). And Vertigo and the Kuzuis are not Warner Bros.

The Hollywood Reporter says that Buffy the Vampire Slayer could be returning to the big screen. Creator Joss Whedon isn't involved and it's not set up at a studio, but Roy Lee and Doug Davison of Vertigo Entertainment are working with original movie director Fran Rubel Kuzui and her husband, Kaz Kuzui, on what is being labeled a remake or relaunch.

The trade adds that Kuzui and her Kuzui Enterprises have held onto the rights since the beginning, when she discovered the "Buffy" script from Whedon. She developed the script while her husband put together the financing to make the 1992 Fox movie.

Kuzui later teamed with Gail Berman in bringing back Whedon to make the TV series, which was produced by Fox TV and launched on the WB in 1997.

The new film, however, would have no connection to the TV series, nor would it use popular supporting characters like Angel, Willow, Xander or Spike. Vertigo and Kuzui are looking to restart the story line without trampling on the beloved existing universe created by Whedon.

One of the underlying ideas of "Buffy" allows Vertigo and Kuzui to do just that: that each generation has its own vampire slayer to protect it. The goal would be to make a darker, event-sized movie.

The parties are meeting with writers and hearing takes, and later will look for a home for the project. The producers do not rule out Whedon's involvement but have not yet reached out to him.

What do you think, I think it might be a pretty cool idea and my interest is piqued. How about anyone else reading this. Lets discuss.

A new incarnation of Buffy the Vampire Slayer is being developed for the big screen, but don't get too excited, Buffy fans: This version wouldn't involve series creator Joss Whedon, would have no connection to the beloved TV show and wouldn't make use of such characters as Angel, Willow, Xander or Spike.

OMG. NO. If Joss isn't going to be involved it won't be the same BTVS. They'll just end up tarnishing the world we all love. Even if Joss was somehow involved if it's not all the same cast, especially SMG....it just won't work. Hasn't SMG said before she would never do it? It's just not possible. The only way they could even have a chance would be to make it a different slayers story.

I just couldn't see something that would change the way I feel about the series now. I mean, come on the original movie sucked! NOOOOOOO!!!!!!! :bite-cha::fighting1:iamwithst
 
If the new Buffy movie is going to made without the original cast...what is the bloody point? Buffy fans won't stand for it (at least I won't be) and we should all boycott it!

Nothing in the Buffyverse is considered canon without Joss's involvement. The complete list of canon:

* The Buffy TV series
* The Angel TV series
* The Buffy Season 8 comics
* The Angel: After the Fall comics (issues 1-17 and 23)
* The Spike: After the Fall comics
* The Fray comics/graphic novel
* The Tales of the Slayers comics
* The Tales of the Vampires comics
* The Buffy: The Origin comic

The 1992 movie isn't canon, and this new movie wouldn't be either. (The 1992 movie was originally written by Joss, but the producers butchered his script to the point where it wasn't his story anymore... the Origin comic supersedes it.)
 
I think that the success of the new "Star Trek" movie, which seemed to ignore canon whenever it would have interfered with the current storyline (okay, they used the old "parallel universe/alternate reality" crutch), and the new "Terminator" movie, which stayed fairly close to canon but without Spielberg having any association with its storyline, are going to go a long way in convincing the producers that rebooting Buffy can indeed be a financial success.

And as far as any new movie adhering strictly to canon goes, none of the Buffy/Angel novelizations, with the exception of "Chosen" really were considered canon, and quite a few people here really seemed to like them. And what about fan fiction? Sure, the basic characters are there, and they're usually either in or have come from from a place called Sunnydale, but some of it, in fact a LOT of it, varies significantly from anything that Whedon ever either wrote or even implied, and nobody has tried to boycott even the most outlandish examples.

I say, give the movie, assuming that there ever is a movie, a chance to succeed or fail on its own merits. There are writers available who are as good or better than Joss ever was, and actors as good or better than Sarah, James, David, or any of the other cast members. I can remember a time when Star Trek fans threatened to boycot and movie or tv show that didn't involve Roddenberry, Shatner, and Nimoy, and a lot of those very fans are the ones praising the new movie and its cast to high Heaven. Granted, there hasn't been as much time passed between the original Buffy series as there was between the original Star Trek and its latest version, but that, to me at least, isn't that great an issue. There have been other Tarzans since Johnny Weismuller, other James Bonds since Sean Connery, other Sherlock Holmes since Basil Rathbone, other Batmen (thank God!!) than Adam West, and now, it seems, there will be more Buffys after Gellar.

My offer from before still stands. Meet me at the theater, I'll buy the popcorn.

After the movie is over and the final credits have run, we can go someplace and have a long debate over the merits of the new interpretation versus the original. But I, for one, intend to hold my judgment until after the fact. I may hate it, or I may love it, but I'm certainly gonna see it before I decide one way or the other.
 
I want joss to make the, Buffy movie not that over dude!!! 🙁 🙁 .
Joss should stand up for the show because he made the show more popular, and he should get some credit making the movie.
He wasting his money on dollhouse instead of that he should make the new Buffy movie 🙂 with all the cast involved.
If he does that he be richer then the queen lol

If this movie got made and was any sort of a success... the problem would be with new fans. Ones who don't really remember the TV series. They would simply assume a big splashy Hollywood movie represented THE Buffy the Vampire Slayer... that would be their canon, not that TV show their parents watched. It would split the fandom along generational lines, and eventually the Kuzui canon would displace Joss's in the pop-culture mindset. And that would be terrible.

And if the movie was terrible, it would defame Joss's work as well. Most people wouldn't distinguish between Joss Buffy and non-Joss Buffy. We would be back to the situation he faced when the series first came out: people turned up their noses at it because it was based on "that crappy movie."

Anyway, I just did a trademark search at the Patents & Trademarks office database. There are 26 registered trademarks for "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." Some of them have lapsed, but ALL of them are or were held by Twentieth Century Fox. I can state that the Kuzuis own no trademarks pertaining to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. If they want to make this movie with that title or with the Buffy character, they're going to have to fight Fox's legal department. And bear in mind, Fox is still making money off the Buffy franchise. It's not something they're just going to let go.

My problem with the new movie wouldent be the movie itself it would be it would destroy any hope, even the smallest chance of them continuing on the series in film or dvd or tv show from. it would be the new buffy. it would replace everything we love. id love a new buffy movie its just im still holding onto the slightest hope of a comeback special and it would even destroy the comics
 
This sounds terrible. What I want is a Buffy movie, written and directed by Joss Whedon, with Sarah and the rest of the cast.
 
The problem is that the people involved in this new Buffy movie idea are the people who made the 1st Buffy Movie.

If it was being made by someone with a good reputation for this sort of thing I would not have as much of problem with this idea.

Although I would still prefer a continuation even if they had to re-cast some of the roles.

But then I would have preferred it if they had moved Star Trek at least 100 years forward from the TNG era with a new crew of a new Starship Enterprise.

Don't get me wrong I enjoyed the new ST movie but I don't like the lack of imagination involved in rehashing old ideas. Unless you do a BSG style complete revamp that is considerably better than the original.

Personally I doubt that the original director of the Buffy movie has the ability to do much better than the original movie let alone even approach the quality of the TV series.

Don't rewin buffy! It ended well please don't mess it up!
Don't fix somthing if it isn't broken.
Making a NEW buffy will probs be bad as people will want to
critsis it and are already willing to hate it. So don't
give it a bad name just to make your self a few $$
Unless Joss SMG and the whole cast are involved forget it please!
 
I actually could live with a Buffy that didn't have the original cast, though at least some of them would be nice. That's not always going to be possible. But it's got to have Joss or it's just posing.

If it were a good plot then I could live with it. Something along the lines of Buffy traveling to fight evil I could live with and would be ok if it didnt involve the Scoobies but anything else not so great and ofcourse Joss has to be part of it.
