Buffy movie being developed without Joss

This idea is just stupid! If they're going to revive the Buffy franchise (which still hasn't completely died, since we still have the season 8 comics), shouldn't they just wait about 20-30 years and then make a reboot movie with a new cast playing the same characters a la Star Trek? That said, I would hate to see that, too, unless it was really well done and they set it in some sort of slightly different universe (again, like Star Trek).
Word. In order to make any sense at all, this movie comes at least a decade too early.

Wow relaunching Buffy right now is just wrong. Relaunching Buffy without its core charecters is just stupid. Is nothing sacred?

Though a tiny piece of me is interested in seeing what they will do though I doubt this movie will ever get made.

Thinking about it now, they wouldnt be able to use the scoobies w/out Joss' permission since he holds the rights to those charecters while these people only have the rights to the name and concept. Another reason why this is wrong. And I doubt they will be able to prove us wrong.

Looks like Vertigo Entertainment is the company that brought us the Grudge flicks, The Lake House, The Uninvited, etc. I was surpised how short the Kuzuis' actual credit list on IMDB is too. I always thought their involvement with the show was quite minimal, if anything at all.

You just knew a remake was coming for Buffy, like everything else out there. Never thought it would be this soon though.

It was minimal, but the deal they had gave them the right to be credited even on Angel - a show they didn't pay a penny for.

This is the biggest fail in the history of failure! The Kuzuis were a huge part of why the 1992 film sucked epically. I really am not happy with them re-introducing the franchise to new and wider audience. Wonder if Joss would like to ride in his big white horse and develop his own movie to counteract this.

See, I'm worried that this pretty much sinks any chance of that happening in the near future. The people who would finance Joss' movie (working under the presumption that he's raring to go....which he's not) probably wouldn't see the difference. They'd see a Buffy movie that tanked years ago, and a Buffy movie that tanks next year....and they'll pull right away.

But then again, the Buffy cast and crew do seem to like fighting for what they believe in. It would be nice to see some kind of response from them. A youtube clip of SMG and Eliza dissing the new Buffy......that would make my life!

What Kean said.
If they were just going to make a film about a vampire slayer then I wouldn't be hating on it that much.
But actually making Buffy again. That's just terrible. They've already done it twice. They've already shown how terrible it can be and how good it can be. So what are they aiming for?

So, I wonder if young Buffy's gonna fall into a mystical black hole and have new adventures in a parallel timeline (like Trek).

If Brian K. Vaughan writes the script and Sam Raimi directs, I could be into this. Otherwise, just makes me sad.

Another article for this insane idea of a movie.

The Year of the Remakes continues with a new version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer looming on the horizon.

The project doesn’t have a script yet, but is being developed by Doug Davison and Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment (the production company behind the US remakes of The Grudge, The Ring, The Eye), in conjunction with Fran Rubel Kuzui and her husband Kaz Kuzui.

The Kuzuis are heavily involved with the Buffy the Vampire Slayer franchise. Fran Rubel was the director of the original film and the couple produced both the movie, and the TV series. In addition, they still hold the rights to the character.
The movie will have no connection to the TV series, and characters developed for it will not be included in the reboot.

At present Joss Whedon isn’t involved with the film, and although there’s always the chance he may come on board at a later date the predictable fan backlash has already begun. Some of the more moderate comments on whedonesque.com include:

“This is the worst idea I've ever heard of. Buffy, without Joss? How insulting.”

“I don't think "no" is a strong enough word.”

“They can't be serious.”

While the idea of this remake has upset fans it may not be quite as horrible as they would have you think.

The original film, although badly realised, had a great and simple premise (Valley-girl versus vampires) that was sort of lost by the time the TV series was made. Instead the Sarah Michelle Gellar incarnation of Buffy became bogged down with daemons, ghosts, witches and Scoobies.

While the complex mythology and large supporting cast of the TV series suited a long running show it would be impossible to translate into a 90 to 120 minute film narrative. Look at the commercial failure of Serenity as an example of how non-fan audiences will avoid an inaccessible movie.

Lee and Davison have a fairly good pedigree, although they have made a few crappy films most of their output is fairly decent. If they can combine the scares of their Asian horror remakes with a suitably sharp (and humorous) premise and competent director, the film could actually be rather good.

All they need now is a Whedon-penned script to appease the fans.
Buffy Rebooted | Hey U Guys

Don't worry. This movie ain't gonna happen.

The article reports that the Kuzuis have "held on to the rights" to Buffy, but that's not accurate. The "rights" they held on to were the rights to be credited as producers on all Buffy film or TV projects and spinoffs (including Angel), and, I assume, a small cut of the royalties.

The copyrights and trademarks to Buffy the Vampire Slayer and all the characters, including Buffy, are held by 20th Century Fox. The same 20th Century Fox that's currently working with Joss on Dollhouse and the Buffy Season 8 comics.

There's no way Fox would greenlight this without Joss's say-so... and we all know how Joss feels about the Kuzuis and what they did to his script in the 1992 movie.

So Fox's decision is whether to approve this movie, thereby alienating Joss and his very vocal, very influential fandom, in order to make a movie that Joss himself could never get greenlit, by a dinky production company nobody's ever heard of, with a pair of producers who have already failed famously with the Buffy franchise.

Not happening.

Well said! Now, let's hope this idea dies quietly... and quickly.

AndrewCrossett well well said!
I think take away, the orginals you take away the pain purpose, the whole into every generation, does this mean that the orginal "buffy" would be dead in this movie? It is very unclear how will they rap their minds around that everyone ID'S SMG as Buffy what would the point be getting someone else to play buffy when everyone would rip it apart anyway.
I hope it fades away or they use the ORGINALS! such as SMG other wise they should 100% scrap the idea!

Well, to be fair, Sarah was never the "original" Buffy. That was always Kristy Swanson from the Kazui's 1992 movie. So I can almost see how they'd feel justified in doing this. Without them, there would be no Buffy.

But their Buffy isn't our Buffy. If it did get made, it wouldn't be the same character, never mind the same continuity. So, I suppose it'd be easy enough for us to ignore. It would just be a shame if the already dodgy general mis-perception of the Buffy brand by the general public is further tarnished by this.

The story of the Kuzuis' wanting to do a Buffy movie was around once before in 2005. That time though, it surfaced from someone I'll call a known BS artist named Richard O'Sullivan who attempted to ride Whedon's coat tails on at least 3 occassions with Whedon related stories which turned out to be false. Here's a link to an old thread on it...

Buffy without Whedon? - Buffy-Boards

I'm making an educated guess the story quoted there is from O'Sullivan, so I wouldn't attach too much credibility to anything said in it. Here's a description of the movie he said he was writing for the Kuzuis though.

The end result, which carried the working title "Slayer: The Adventures of Buffy Summers," picked up some 90 years in the future with the heroine frozen in time, literally turned to wood, and part of an art piece depicting a war between humans and demons.

"The idea was that at some point after the turn of the new millennium, a great battle took place between good and evil and for whatever reason, a powerful mystical force froze Buffy and the demons she was fighting for almost a century," says O'Sullivan. "When the story opens, a tour guide is explaining to a group of school kids -- a mixture of humans and demons -- that the world 90 years ago was a much different, less tolerant place."

Naturally, Buffy is released from the spell, and, after disposing of the demons she had been frozen with for nine decades, is forced to deal with the new inter-dimensional world order.

"It was a very Patton-after-the-war type script," says O'Sullivan. "Here you had Buffy, instantly transported to a new place in time, all her friends gone, the war she had fought since she was sixteen years old over...not knowing who to trust, not knowing how to deal with the fact that she's not supposed to be fighting the monsters she was brought forth to kill. Plus, now she has to wrap her head around concepts like vampires and demons having free will and coexisting with humans in everyday life. It was an interesting new dynamic and not just a rehash of roads already traveled."

If it were done by someone other than those responsible for the terrible original film, I really wouldn't be that outraged by the idea of a reboot. It doesn't have to have anything to do with the TV series aside from the name, which there's already a horrible film attached to so nothing new there, really.

Tim Minear has described this venture as "Unthinkable" on Whedonesque. Pretty much sums it up.

I always had a sneaking suspicion the Kuzuis were the unnamed partial rights holders responsible for roadblocking the Whedon/BBC collaboration of a Ripper movie.

When I get home from work tonight, I'll transcribe the copyright/trademark disclaimer from the latest Season 8 comic. That should make everyone feel better.

I guarantee you the names "Kuzui" and "Sand Dollar" do not occur within it.
