Buffy movie being developed without Joss

@white avenger: totally agree.
Cant believe all the ones against this. Its not like Joss is gonna be making anything Buffy related anytime soon, this movie might end up being good. Anyone hoping for a Joss written, original cast movie may as well get over the idea that its ever gonna happen. If the new writers and cast stick to the script it should be good imo.

My feelings are, to quote Ms. White from Clue (which is also getting remade and im also pissed about but thats a whooole nuther matter): "flames, on the side of my face, breathing... heaving breaths..."

I can't stress enough how this is not a question of quality.

It's a question of the wrongness of taking Joss's creation away from him against his will after he spent the last 15 years making it what it is.

I could not care less whether this movie would be good or not. It's wrong.

And I'm getting pretty depressed at the number of people just shrugging that off.

Apparently not.

It seems as if it is going to be a remake of the original film. So would require someone that looks like a 16 year old. I don't think that SMG could pull that off.

Here's the article Varr posted the link to (please try and quote the actual article to make discussion easier - thanks 🙂):

Buffy is BACK!

That's right kiddies, a new Buffy could be coming to theaters near you very, very soon! The original director, Fran Rebel Kuzui, of the first Buffy movie that came out back in 1992 is back in talks with Vertigo Entertainment to bring a relaunch or remake of the original film. But at this point, Joss Whedon is not involved.

Whedon is the name we normally associate first with anything related to Buffy. He wrote the first script and brought us the TV series and whatnot, but Kuzui has held onto the rights to Buffy and developed the script since she discovered the then unknown Joss Whedon.

The new Buffy movie won't tie in to the TV series at all, and some of your favorite characters from the TV won't make it to the big screen including Angel, Willow, Xander or Spike. However, Kuzui and associates don't want to trample on, or undo any of what the TV series has done for the franchise, and really want to take this back to the beginning for a relaunch, bringing a new Buffy for the next generation.

Currently Kuzui is getting pitches from writers to find the story they want to go with, after that they will start pitching to the studios for a home.

Whedon's involvement still isn't ruled out though, but the producers have yet to reach out to him on this project. My bet is, he'll want to get his hands involved in this and we'll see him on board for this project. Thanks to THR for the awesome news about this exciting new development, keep it here for more news as it breaks!

I've been surfing around the internet, and the "Buffy May Be Back Without Whedon" seems to be on just about every site even remotely dealing with movies in any way. Even though almost all of the response seems to be negative, it's certainly getting everybody's attention, and that might very well be the ultimate deciding factor in convincing the studios to make it. It's a well known fact in Hollywood that controversy sells tickets.

The levels of misinformation and general cluelessness in some of these articles is just amazing. Yeah, I'm sure Joss is just itching to get his hands on this project.

Here we have a report that someone is talking to someone else about maybe making a Buffy movie, and it's being reported as if it's in the can and coming out this Christmas. What the hell? Does no one question anything anymore? Do news sites just take the press releases they get and release them as news stories without any critical thought at all?

Time for Fox's legal department to do whatever it takes to put a bullet through this thing's head.

. Yeah, I'm sure Joss is just itching to get his hands on this project.

Even if there were a movie, and Joss were to become involved, I seriously doubt that they would have enough money to lure Sarah back into playing Buffy again. Both she and David have done everything within their power to prove that they can be something besides Buffy and Angel. Reprising those roles (assuming that Angel or any of the other characters would eventually end up in the movie at all) would be a giant step backward in their careers.

Well, nothing about this suggests they are trying to get Sarah. The information is sketchy, at best, but it all points to a new, but completely seperate Buffy franchise which wouldn't involve any of the established canon and wouldn't need any of the actors/actresses from the show.

Yeah I just saw this on EP Daily (a videogame/movie news show here in canada) and they said it would not be any of the established characters or cast, and will be a brand new, darker revamp (pardon the pun) of the francise

I always had a sneaking suspicion the Kuzuis were the unnamed partial rights holders responsible for roadblocking the Whedon/BBC collaboration of a Ripper movie.

is the Ripper movie still going to be made, I went on the Joss Whedon IMDB page and it has it listed on under in developement. Although you have to be a member of IMDB Pro to read any more information on it ( if there is any)

Anthony Head just recently said the Ripper movie/miniseries is still alive, but any forward momentum on it got stopped by Joss doing Dollhouse. So, it probably wouldn't happen until Dollhouse is either finished or running smoothly enough that Joss has time for other stuff. (He's also working on comics and at least one movie right now.)
