Buffy movie being developed without Joss

Five Reasons Why a New 'Buffy' Might Be Better Without Joss Whedon -- and One Reason Why It Won't - FEARNet

I just thought some of the more rabid objectors might like to read this. Remember, THEY said it, not me, but it's the first thing I've seen presenting, sort of, the opposite side of the argument.

Gee, just when I thought I couldn't get any angrier about this. I can't tell you how I feel about that article without getting banned from this board, so I won't.

But once again, people are arguing this from a better/worse perspective and ignoring the fact that you do not take a story away from its author and hand it to someone else while the story is still being told... and very well, thank you, despite this person's snarkiness. Buffy is Joss's story. If they made a good movie, it would still be a WRONG good movie.

Doesn't anyone care?

Then again, this is the 21st century. Questions of moral rightness and wrongness are irrelevant.

No Joss, No Buffy. Period.

God, I haven't been this furious about anything in a long, long time. I don't know that I can even discuss it anymore.

Unfortunately, Hollywood has been doing this very thing since...well, since there has been Hollywood.

And it's been wrong that whole time, as it is now.

Hopefully this time, Joss has enough supporters -- within fandom and within Fox -- to let the good guys win for once.

Anyway, I need to try very hard to take a break from posting about this because I'm close to losing my cool about it. I feel like I'm gonna blow steam out of my ears like Elmer Fudd.

There's nothing I can do but wait for more news and hope that Fox's legal department is very busy this weekend.

My poor, poor blood pressure...

I hope the ripper series does end up getting done even if this new 'fuffy' film gets done because then it will continue the timeline and buffyverse we all love (sorry for the double post)

what the hell, i hope it isn't successful, because it's not gonna be the same without the original cast,
not in a million yearrsssssssssssssssssss!

There's one thing I don't understand, and after reading through some of the posts here, and elsewhere on the interwebz, it didn't get any clearer.
Now, is this movie, if its going to be made, a remake of the original movie, meaning there will be some crappy teenage actress pretending to be Buffy, or will it be a movie based on the Buffy franchise, possibly with a different slayer, possibly with a new Buffy?

In either case, I think its rather ridiculous how they left Whedon, and Fox for that matter, out of it so easily. But that might well be their downfall. As AndrewCrosset said some posts up, all trademarks are still owned by 20th Century Fox, who are still making money off it. I can't imagine they just let this one go.

How can they remake the Buffy film? Or the Buffy franchise? Doesn't Joss own it? He created it after all. If I were Joss, I'd be going after them with an axe. Or stake.

Pretty much all of the reasons on this list are...hm, how should I put it...bullsh-t. For one thing, he doesn't realize that the movie is going to be about the character of Buffy, which is why it's pissing off the fans so much. I'd actually be on-board if they were writing it about a different Slayer. Then, there's his explanation for "being done with Buffy"...it makes no sense. First, he starts going on about how he was annoyed that she got too strong, which is ridiculous on its own. I almost had to laugh at his "she's human, people!" comment...does he not realize that she had superpowers and could heal really fast from the very beginning? As for the strength continuity, every single show does that, so I don't see why he sees it as a valid reason to complain about the show. Besides, the way I see it, she can "leap tall buildings in a single bound and take a punch like a superhero" in more episodes than she can "get knocked out easily with a kick to the head," and when you listen to the writers' commentary in those episodes, they usually admit that she shouldn't have gotten knocked out so easily. Then mid-paragraph, he decides that he wants to change his reason and says that she got too depressing for his taste. What the hell does he want? Then, there's his "Joss has the worst endings ever" argument, which I'd sort of be behind if it weren't for his last comment about thinking that the Angel finale was bad. I know it's an opinion, but I think he's, like, the only person ever to not think that the Angel finale was awesome. Just sayin'.

Now, this is the only reason I can understand...
Reason 3: J.J. Abrams Scored with Star Trek
I was never a Star Trek fan, but I enjoyed J.J.'s new film. So did the rest of the country, obviously. He breathed new life into a franchise that was associated with geeks and nerds at comic book conventions. When I think Star Trek, I used to think of bad acting, cheesy sets, and generally crappy sci-fi (I'm looking at you, Enterprise). Now I think of it as a fresh, viable franchise. Perhaps a new Buffy crew would have the same effect, making it seem less like teeny-bopper fare, and more like a strong genre comedy.

...but unfortunately, it doesn't make much sense in the end. For one thing, the only season of Buffy that was "teeny-bopper fare" was the first one, but that's beside the point. Unlike Star Trek, Buffy is fairly recent and is widely recognized as a great show. Plus, Star Trek was a whole franchise of shows that spanned through generations (they had The Original Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space 9, Voyager, and Enterprise) whereas Buffy was not only one individual show, but also very character-based while Star Trek was more plot-based, making the character replacements much easier for them to do.

But the main reason why a Buffy movie wouldn't be like the Star Trek one is because J.J. Abrams has proven himself to be a very good writer/director. Lost, Alias, and Fringe are all very good (not to mention popular) shows. The Kuzuis, on the other hand, have only made the original Buffy movie, which pretty much everyone thinks was just awful. If they got a more capable writer and director, I'd be behind it, but alas, they didn't.

But lousy reasoning aside, the main reason why this list bugged me was because the guy who wrote it clearly wasn't a fan of the show. He seemed to only like the first season, then decided that, when the entire show wasn't a campy, light-hearted comedy, it was too dark. Plus, he said that he wanted the movie to be a "genre comedy," which is exactly what the fans are worried about...while Buffy did have a lot of humor incorporated into it, it was a sci-fi drama at the core, but when it's sci-fi heavy he says it's "ridiculous" and when it's a drama, he says it's a "downer." They should have gotten someone who actually enjoyed the show to write the list because of they did, maybe their reasoning would make sense.

Jusy remember, THEY said it, not me. All I say is, give the movie a chance. Certainly, it'd be better if Joss were involved, but even without him, it MIGHT be pretty good.

Does anyone else have friends constantly bombarding them with the news? All of my friends know the extent to which i love Buffy, so my boyfriend was the first to let me know about this. Later that day, i had an IM from someone else. 2 days later, a message on facebook. Yesterday, another message on facebook. ARGH it's haunting me! I told them all pretty much the same thing "I know already, and i don't want to talk about it!"

Grrr. this whole thing makes me so mad. I like the idea of boycotting in Buffyverse cosplay, HalfBreed!

Read this. It's funny 'cause it's true.

I'm going to paste a comment I made somewhere else yesterday:

If Vertigo and the Kuzuis wanted to go from the Buffyverse's biggest villains to its biggest heroes in the blink of an eye... all they'd have to do is announce they were re-making the 1992 movie, faithful to Joss's script this time, with a good director and a good cast. Announce that they're giving us Buffy's canonical origin story, the way it was supposed to be, and Judgment Day suddenly becomes Christmas Morning.

Want to make that even cooler? Take an idea from the "Origin" comic and end the film with an epilogue revealing that Buffy, in the "present day", has been telling this story to Giles, Xander and Willow... played by Sarah, Tony, Nick and Alyson.

Vertigo suddenly goes from having a movie roundly hated by its intended fandom to having one that, regardless of how it does in theaters, would sell at least 5 million copies on DVD. Guaranteed.

And as for the franchise potential they were hoping for... the success of this movie would open the door for them to shepherd that new Joss Buffy movie fans have been clamoring for for the past 5 years. Do a movie adaptation of season 8... or one set between 7 and 8... or a "never before told" story. The Kuzuis get their payday and their screen credit according to the usual arrangements... angels sing, church bells ring out, and everybody goes to bed happy.

this is the best idea I've ever heard.
Yeah, the reasons on that list were pretty stupid, but that aside, I think someone could make an argument for this new movie (better than those arguments, at the very least). Now I'm not saying that I think the Kuzuis making this film is a good idea, but I can see what they'd be hoping for. I can look at this from an outsider perspective.

1. As mentioned above, the Star Trek comparison is inevitable. Clearly, the hope would be to relaunch Buffy to appeal to a new group of people. And they figure now is the time because vampires seem to be hot right now.

2. Sure if they could convince Sarah and crew to do a movie, all of us here at Buffy Boards would prefer to see a movie that's a continuation of the the Joss Whedon TV series. But there are reasons a studio would prefer not to do this. Some of the very things that make Buffy awesome to the hardcore fans are also reasons why it could alienate others. When a genre show like Buffy is on the air seven years, it develops a lot of history, continuity, injokes, etc. that make it less likely to attract new fans the further it goes on. Joss has a good deal of fans, but most likely a Buffy movie that's a continuation of the current franchise would mostly just attract current fans. Joss does have a lot of fans, but not enough to make such a movie a huge hit. Especially when you factor in how much more expensive it would be to pay Sarah, Alyson, Tony, etc. than it would be to cast up and coming actors in the film. So relaunch the franchise, advertise it in a way that makes non-fans think maybe this film is not what they've come to associate with Buffy (whether their preconceived notions are accurate or not), and you've got a bunch of new people willing to get in line. And enough fans of the TV show would see it too, just because the name is Buffy (some of the less hardcore fans may not even realize it isn't associated with Joss, Sarah). They'd most likely hate it, but what does this matter once the money has changed hands?

3. Things do get remade all the time anymore. Hate to go back to Star Trek a second time, but Shatner was the only Kirk for years and years longer than Buffy has even existed, and Sarah is already the second Buffy. This is nothing new really.

Again, I'm not saying this will be a good movie. I just could see arguments for the movie being made, from a non-fan perspective. Certainly I think the chances of it being good with the Kuzuis running the show are slim, based on their history.

Im probbably going to be repeating myself ALOT on this thread, but i feel really strongly when i say THE IDEA SUCKS! this remake will create a new Buffyverse ruining any chances of a Follow on from the Buffyverse we all lovE! this film must be stopped

And to take the "Star Trek" example even further, there's that "alternate reality/parallel universe" thing. What if, in the proposed movie, Merrick wasn't killed by Lothos, Joyce was. Buffy would then have a father, but no mother, and her original Watcher. No Giles, no Sunnydale, no hellmouth, Willow, Xander, Angel, Faith, or Spike. A whole new Slayer Buffy in a parallel reality. By doing that, canon is preserved even though the movie's plot line is different. The only connection would be Buffy herself, and that could be explained by the absence of dyed blond hair, weight gain or loss, and different wardrobe, makeup, and hair style.

Everybody more or less satisfied.

I saw something about this in Entertainment Magazine.
It looks really stupid.
It's missing the cast and the great producer.
Just leave the series alone and quit remaking something that's been a success.
It's kind of like releasing a Christmas movie in October with Ben Affleck.

Joss got around to the subject of the recently announced Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie reboot. His reaction? "I feel a great sense of amusement at the concept." He doesnt own any rights to his creation himself, having sold the script to the film many years ago, but doesn't begrudge the producers for following the current trend. "They got me my start, and I owe them an awful lot. It's also not as though I didn't have my time with Buffy. I had seven years to work with those characters and I'm curious to see what somone else will bring to it." In his own self-depricating fashion he observed that if he had tried to get a Buffy movie going himself, it probably would've been marred by legal trouble and have never gotten the greenlight i.e. Wonder Woman.

I'm sure many of you saw this on whedonesque, but Anthony Head spoke out about it:

Doing a Buffy movie without Whedon? "I wouldn't want to see it, no," Head admits. "The Kuzuis didn't do a great job on the movie the first time around. It was Joss' script at the age of 19, but they changed a lot of it. They said, "˜Look, we know best and we know how to make this movie,' and it became quite schlocky and high camp." Head recalls the time when he went to audition for the Buffy series because he loved Whedon's pilot script so much, and his agent advised him to watch the movie to get the tone of the show before his screen test. "So I did and I went, "˜Oh, that's not it at all.' I went in and saw Joss and said, "˜I watched the movie last night!' And he went, "˜Oh. Did ya?' I just put it out of my mind. The bottom line is if a movie was ever to be made, it should be made with Joss Whedon, whether it's a retrospective or not. But it would be madness to do it without him. [The Kazuis] have the rights to because they have the rights to the original movie, but it should be interesting to see. It may be a bit like watching a car wreck."

Ha, I love Anthony Head :-)
He's more free than Joss. And I totally agree with him. This movie without Joss and all the series characters and actors is a TERRIBLE idea.
