Oh jesus it is not that serious. Really?! Here is the deal. Buffy and Angel still has quite a fan base. That is just reality. It is not so far fetched to say that a movie is possible. I understand that five years ago SMG said she wanted to distance herself from the role but in an interview less than 3 months ago she said on a buffy panel that she would like to work with Joss again therefore I think it is possible. Additionally, yes David and Spike are older but at the same time if you look at both of them now they are in great shape and could totally pull off those characters again. Keep hope alive, that is what I say 🙂
There is a difference between keeping hope alive and living in a fantasy world.
We should also look at how many times we've had promises of something new and then it has been dropped.
What was the last we heard about Ripper?
Ohh it was full steam ahead UNTIL Dollhouse then nothing much.
Spike/Illyria spin off?
There was full steam ahead, people seemed interested UNTIL Joss decided he wouldn't really be as involved as he should have been and BOOM, nothing.
I have never been a fan of Whedon because although he comes across to people as someone who 'loves his fans' I truly believe he thinks they are HIS fans and not fans of the show(which is not true for everyone - alot of people who love Buffy on a TV level won't even know who he is) and the fact that he has lost backing over time has really hit him hard - hence, in my opinion, doing the Comic.
He has stuffed us everytime something shiny and new has come along and I don't believe he really wants his career to be defined by Buffy - so a movie is probably a no-no.
As per SMG saying she wants to work with Joss again, that doesn't mean Buffy. That means she wants to work with him in something - maybe a guest spot on Dollhouse.
Buffy has a fairly appreciative fan base BUT in terms of box office numbers thats not nearly enough to warrant a movie, no a studio budget one anyway.
Studios are out to make money, simple as. They don't care about artistic flair SO if a movie was a viable route, then you bet that people would have been busting down ALL the key players doors.
And yes, the fact that X-Files, with its HUGE fanbase, was a failure in the box office (though I enjoyed the film) will definitely be another nail in the Buffy Movie.
