Buffy Season 8? Meh?

Let me put it this way: Don't you behave out of character sometimes? Don't you just do something, anything and then later ask yourself, "What the heck was I thinking when I did that?"
The same goes for characters on a TV show or rather, in a comic. They do stuff out of the blue. Then they regret it and sometimes, they don't but discover another facet of theirs and the out of character moment goes on to become an in character storyline. Or sometimes, they acknowledge the new experience and go on on their old ways.
People are allowed to change and to experiment.
 
I think I'm pretty consistent in my personal life, but I don't like to compare real life to characters in fiction. In fiction I think characters have to follow a structure or pattern based on what we've seen from them. When a character grows or changes, then there should be a strong narrative or explanation to their actions in my opinion. The Buffy/Satsu moment was tossed in and then tossed aside. I don't understand it personally, but that's just me.

I thought Willow's move to women with Tara worked and made sense. Buffy's fling with Satsu doesn't. It's just how I feel. Now I'll say something positive: Retreat was a great issue, and I'm excited for the first time in a long time about the comics.
 
Did you read issue 11 and 12 and then thought the Batsu thing was out of the blue or did you, as you said, just flip through the pages and saw nakedness?

Of course, it took me a few reading to see that "Huh, I guess Buffy sleeping with Satsu made sense", and some people still don't get it, but if you didn't read it,
just flipped, no wonder you don't get it.

Don't get me wrong, I thought Buffy wasn't attracted to women at all until issue 12. But I think it was more a comfort/they-shared-a-moment-thing than "true" attraction to a woman and the womanly parts.

But this isn't a Batsu thread, so I'll leave it there.

There is a lot of things in Season 8 that needs to be explained tough. The Mecha-Dawn thing was way out there, and even tough I can fanwank it to make sense, Season 8 is in no way comparable to the other seasons when it comes to being easy to understand/explain. A lot of questions left unanswered, which I think is part of it's charm.

For example, the telepathy thing threw me in The Gift, but I figured that Willow was getting stronger and mind-control/mind-powers wasn't that big a leap. Mecha Dawn was ... a big leap. I guess Willow built her(maybe she learned a lot from the Buffy-bot) or bought her, made her superhuge and teleported her.

Actually, I'm not sure if Mecha-Dawn is such a huge surprise when you think about it. Maybe it's just feels like it's been done before, so now it seems like a paraody? It's not like Angel losing his soul due to happines, alternative dimensions, higher beings, Jasmine etceetc wasn't a big leap forward, mythology and plotwise. Maybe we think Mecha Dawn and the treefolks and Gepeto etcetc where too much simply because we immediatly thought "Haven't I read this comic/book, seen this movie before?"

If we hadn't seen/read Lord of the rings and watched Godzilla or any movie with robots, would we still think "Come on, this is just too much"?

Just a thought.
 
Sky, I fully read the issues, some of them multiple times. When I said I flipped a page, I mean I turned the page after reading the previous one, and on the next page there was Buffy and Satsu in bed without warning, at least in my eyes. I'm just saying if they were going to do this, they should of fleshed it out much more. I suppose they still could. I'm at least glad Willow, Xander, and Dawn seemed confused by the events that night as well, I can relate. I'd really like to end this topic here though, I didn't mean to start another conversation on this overdone subject. Sorry!

If you read "A Beautiful Sunset," then it certainly shouldn't have been without warning. The entire issue was pretty much setting this up.

People do unexpected things. They do it even more often in fantasy stories. The story would bore the hell out of me if that wasn't the case.

Anyway... the new issue #26 really throws things back into high gear. These last 15 issues are going to be epic.
 
Issue 11 was setting it up? I thought for sure Buffy made it clear she wasn't interested in Satsu and nothing would happen. But that's Whedon for you I guess. But lets agree the final 15 issues should be killer, and a fresh start. Retreat really got me back into it. Except a plot hole....I won't spoil here.
 
I've only read the first five issues, but I love season eight, and I heard it only getts better. 🙂

Thing is, the issue was all about the fact that Buffy was interested in Satsu... interested enough to take her out on a special expedition to talk things over. She told her she wasn't sexually interested in her, but she was wrong. It was a plot twist. It revealed a lot about Buffy's state of mind this season, and I thought it was handled exceptionally well.

I don't expect there will be any lasting romance between the two... maybe Joss will surprise me... but I've made it my mission to lobby for respect for a storyline that has been very widely misunderstood.

I know the plot hole you're talking about. It's going to be difficult to explain that one away.

The latest online comic showed her ecstatic when they showed up, so...
 
Well, Buffy doesn't seem to think of herself as bisexual. For me, if she found Satsu attractive in the sexy way(which I think she did, unless she was thinking of men while having sex with Satsu), she's bi. But labelling people is bad and could lead to endless discussions so I'll leave it at that.

Since she's not together with Satsu(or is she, I haven't read the last two issues?) it's not really about pushing anyone away. I doubt she would want to start anything up with Angel or Spike immedatly either.

Still baking and all that.

I think she would dive right into a Spike or Angel relationship. She immediatly made out with Angel in season seven, and she told Spike she loved him.
 
Well.. how do we define bisexual? I dont think she could be in a relationship with satsu.. but she can have sex with her and enjoy it. For me that's not hard to believe, that's human, it's another side of her. I mean, there sure are some who are really grossed out by the thought of having same-sex-sexual-experience, but most of us are curious and that's normal.

I for example could imagine having sex with a girl, but I couldnt be in a relationship with a girl.. or in love.. it's different.

That's why I like the storyline, Buffy is still young and had some rough months, why wouldn't she enjoy some time with Satsu? But I hope it stays that way... I don't think a relationship between them is believeable.
 
These labels are doomed to failure in Joss's world. He's always said he considers sexual orientation a continuum that people can move back and forth along, not a series of boxes where you have to pick one and climb inside.

Heterosexual, bisexual, homosexual... all we can really say for Buffy is that she's sexual. (Big time.)

Well, she was with Oz for quite a while... then she moved over on the continuum to Tara, and stayed there with Kennedy.

Joss didn't mean that nobody has a consistent sexual preference... just that who someone chooses to love doesn't (or shouldn't) depend on an arbitrary label.

Based on what she's said, she's only interested in girls now. But, anything could happen in the future. I think Joss really likes how inspirational she is to lesbian fans, though, so I don't expect that to change anytime soon.

She's just about to meet up with Oz again in the comics. We've pretty much been told they won't be getting back together, though.
 
I'm going to answer that too, if you don't mind;

I believe she's kidding herself if she believes that she's gay for life and that's it, no turning back.

I don't want to sound offensive, but it could just be a phase and she will eventually like guys again. Maybe guys and girls. And then she moves backs to girls. Or I'm wrong and the straightness was a phase.

I believe/hope that she's going to wake up one day and say "Huh, you know what, I'm kinda bi."

I doubt we will see Willow liking guys in the comic tough, since it would be a slap in some of the hardcore pro-lesbianisms fans.
 
Ugh. Okay, maybe it's just because I hate Kennedy and Tara's dead, but I really want Willow and Oz to get back together. Willow and Tara were perfect together, but she's gone, and...=D
