Re: Conventions; IIRC both SMG and DB will do conventions, but when they can. It's clearly not as much of their income as the supporting cast.

Re: aging; Eh, Brent Spiner started the whole immortal character issue, and he arguably gave Data's best performance in season 3 of Picard. As long as you don't call attention to it, and focus on the acting, you can probably get by on hair dye. I don't like this, as it's easy enough to humanize both characters.

But, if Angel or Spike as vampires are intended to be regular characters who are going to act like teenagers or young adults, it would probably be best to recast. I mean, it all depends on what their role would be and how you intend to use the characters, and what you intend to say with them.

I'm curious about Dawn and Connor.

I can already guess the Bangel talk barely touched on Connor, if at all.

Have you been listening to me? I've already talked about how it would be awesome to have Connor (and Dawn, for that matter) around, especially if he's the big half-brother to perhaps one of the new lead Slayer's gang of Scoobies, which I think would be beautiful. I'd also love to see Auntie Dawn around.

Connor would also be the perfect solution to explaining how you could bring back Angel and maybe Spike as Shanshu'd vampires made human, but perhaps with some of their powers still intact. Not necessary if you want to keep them in sort of Watcher-like roles (Angel would be particularly excellent in research, wisdom and handling troubled characters with strong connections to the Watchers of old), but it would add to the writer toolbox if you could keep them as players in the superhero game despite being much older (same as Buffy in that regard). Connor is the template for how a mortal with vampire-specific powers could be shown (not quite as much durability).

And I wouldn't be averse to Connor and Dawn ending up together. It doesn't quite have as much ick as her with Xander, at least. The actors and characters are at least in the same ballpark, age-wise, and the characters have a lot of crazy in common in regards to their origins and real/fabricated birth years. I would love for Dawn's status as the Key to other dimensions to actually be relevant, as well. Connor certainly would be useful if ever there was a guide needed into surviving a hostile hell dimension.

These are characters that *do* bring things to the storytelling other than their good looks or as celebrity 'member berries.

If any of Buffy's crew drops in, I actually would vote for Dawn as family to be one of the more natural ones for her to keep in contact with. I wouldn't be shocked at all if the Scoobies drifted apart over the last 20+ years. They were heading to Splitsville even during the show. Angel's crew is nearly all dead outside of three immortals including himself and another of Buffy's exes, so not really a lot of characters left to bring back there. Illyria could easily be off doing her own thing. Xander is probably going to have to be assumed as killed off unless Nick's brother plays him.

I'm not actually disagreeing that the new Slayer who isn't related to any of these characters would still be the lead. But for filling out some of her own Scooby Gang, I would go with the easiest-to-explain characters to have had a teenager in the last 20+ years, rather than some of the other 'shipper hopes that have made it into actual published books I see floating around like Willow and dead Tara having a magical biological daughter (somehow makes the Shanshu look downright natural).

Angel's presence is one that could be easily explained without him becoming the whole story that takes away from the new characters (in fact, might be the father of one) and would also solve Buffy's trajectory not including an arrested development of 20+ years where her life went absolutely nowhere. Simply have her being a semi-retired Slayer mom who still slays vampires on occasion and now has to train a new Slayer. Angel would mostly be playing yet another paternal role to his own and probably any new characters who perhaps don't otherwise have a father figure present. That's hardly Buffy and Angel taking the lead roles away from the new characters.

Hmm, I like the idea of Dawn being married to Xander Nicholas Brendon's non-union Mexican equivalent... Xavier, and Buffy being the crazy aunt who shows up every so often to crash on the sofa and give completely inappropriate gifts to Little Joyce. Babies aren't allowed to have crossbows!

I'm also seeing Buffy being the middle aged mom where crazy aunt Dawn comes by to crash on the couch and sleep with Teenage Spike, who is crashing in Buffy's garage. Because Dawn would be a ... Shadow Self, yeah.

I would also point out that if Eliza plays "That's a one, with nine zeros after it," recast her with Krystin Ritter. She's still working.

N.b. These are intended to be humorous.

It's started already......
In just about every article I've seen about this, the comments section has degenerated into a mass argument over which Vampire 'must' come back to be with Buffy!
I've even seen some suggesting that they don't really need Buffy at all....as long as Spike is the main character!

Not via articles but through some of the BTVS fandom I've already seen some commentary and I'm already left sighing.

The one way to combat this is to have Buffy already married, or bring back Riley and have them get back together. 😄

One thing that needs to change massively from the comics era is TONE. The original shows had comedy and quips, sure, but they had a helluva lot more drama, tragedy, romance, horror and world building. The show should absolutely refrain from starting to feel like a Friends sitcom or trying to go crazy with technological advancements that will make it not feel like it's set in the same universe anymore. There needs to be a lot more focus on the supernatural plots, both episodic and serial, which has been missing for a long time.

I would also suggest the writers try to push the limits on what is currently favored in regards to flawed characters (heroes and villains alike) who don't necessarily all talk in the most sanitized ways (it wasn't just Xander, but MANY characters) and make sometimes very huge mistakes they will likely pay for tenfold. And that includes romantic choices that some of the audience is going to be offended by because they're imperfect (even reformed villains or antiheroes). Your fav is problematic was pretty much every single character on the original shows. The purity culture babies shouting loudest should not be listened to.

"You see, if there wasn't evil in every single one of those people out there... Why, they wouldn't be people. They'd all be angels."

And I really think the Buffy situation is best resolved by having her married for decades already. With a legacy offspring as one of the new Slayer's friends.

I don't think the comics will be considered canon anyway, and thank goodness.

To a large extent, that feeling of not being set in the same universe any longer applies to the tone of the series after The Gift.
At one point, Charlotte Prinze and Bella Boreanaz were actually friends (per a comment made around the time of their poolside vacation crashing). Same age (15). They both look really mature now!

They'd be a fun cameo for a school scene.

Satyana Denisof is likewise close in age (all born in 2009--Bella and Charlotte were born only 20 days apart and Satyana was earlier that year in March on her mother's birthday) and looking quite grown up. Keeva Denisof looks like she could play Willow in a flashback. I wonder if Alyson Hannigan and Alexis Denisof's continued closeness to Joss Whedon might still be an issue, though. I know Charisma Carpenter deleted follows to a lot of people still connected to him.

Note: If I was one of the writers I would be tempted to add a digitally de-aged Spike to turn up right at the start of the first Episode only to be dusted by the new Slayer before he can say a word 😈
lol that would be one way to start it. Buffy could say “thank you, I’ve been trying to do that for almost 30 years”
The funniest thing of all time would be for Buffy to kill both Angel and Spike in the pilot episode.

Or...

"Buffy, did you settle down with Spike or Angel then?"

"No, they finally admitted their true feelings."

"Huh?"

"For each other. Spike and Angel are now happily married and running a charming little B&B in Vermont."

Double date with Buffy & Faith perhaps? ;)
I'm in the luke-warm to curious camp. A new Buffy show will always have some degree of interest from me (mostly because its been a long time since the old one).

SMG appearing in just a cameo as a passing of the torch type thing (if that's what it is) feels right. She had a full run as the Slayer and has nothing more to do in the role. My guess is she's only interested in smaller-cameo type roles nowadays anyway.

That's how I feel about everyone else from the original. Cameos and nothing else. I would be fine with Willow for example popping up. But I wouldn't overload it with appearances since this is meant to be a new start. There's obvious limitations to bringing back the Vampires. One way or the other I think the ships of the old show should be left in the past. I don't mind the odd reference to them, but again this is meant to be a fresh start, and isn't about Buffy and the old characters.

It feels sometimes with fandoms or writers trying to put modern spins on things they indulge too much in trying to make fans of the orignal happy or course correcting. This is the problem with the recent Dexter show, the recent Halloween movies (and something which the new Scream film is wrestlng with). At the end of the day you'll never make everyone happy anyway. Sometimes its best to just let history be history and try improve on some of the more dated elements (which BTW any show over 25 years old has), as long as you don't try too hard... Maybe the idea is just to go back to good old fashioned storytellng.

A bit like you don't need Sidney and gang to do a good Scream movie, you don't need Buffy or countless references to the past to do a good Buffy show. The format is there in theory. The concern is that maybe the tone, humour and dialogue of Buffy was just so unique that it maybe a hard thing to recapture now. Another exmaple of this is The West Wing which I'm rewatching right now. A big issue with many shows and films nowadays is they try too hard with the humour. The best way to go might be to just make it a different kind of Buffy show, with moments of humour, but not too much.

Another thing I could see happening with this being Disney is that this show if successful might lead to a bunch of spin-offs involving orignal characters. I'm against that idea anyway (of course some might be good), but chances are they will recast the roles in most cases. That is more stuff you can do in comics and it will work better. In a universe like this there is plenty of room for new characters or spins on old ones.

Yep, totally agree with you.
Eh, I would be more in favor of Buffy being like Joyce or Giles or Zordon. A regular presence or a supporting character, but not the star of the show. I think Buffy in her forties has some new stories to tell. But to be fair, I'm not concerned with "Buffy Summers: Age 44." It's the kids part of the show that I'm concerned about.

Re: Aly: It seems like old grudges tend to get resolved when money is at stake, and Willow is one of the few characters who has the ability to significantly move the needle. I mean, almost everyone except David, Nick and Sarah were part of the Sunday Night Wine & Shakespeare Club at one point, it's not going to be much of a legacy series if a Too Close to Joss litmus test is applied to the actors. I mean, Much Ado About Nothing looked like a fun two weeks!

As it is supposed to be a sequel rather than a continuation of Buffy's story, it does need to be about the new characters with a dash of the old ones for continuity.

Given everything, that is perhaps one of the best reasons to not bring Spike or Angel back at all.

True; you can come across lots of stories about best friend characters whose actors did not get along in real life but, mostly, were able to put that aside in front of the cameras. I have a feeling that I read somewhere that the Charmed actors at one point did not get along. Later in the series maybe?

I have my trust in Sarah, hopefully she will have control of things , writers old and new ,original characters only Willow played by Alyson although friendship with Joss could be a problem, certainly no Angel or Spike or Marti and Joss they have forfeited any right to be mixed up with Buffy, possible small part for Michelle /Dawn I do not think Eliza would be interested in returning at all, Nick a definite No No, although I suppose they could bring in other actors to any role, apart from that no it has to be about a modern day slayer etc, modern special effects would improve things a great deal , There are many fan fiction on what happened after Chosen where they start the council up again I think it has to be along the lines of this , as before trust in Sarah

Mauler, Nerdrotic, and Critical Drinker. What's next, Angry Joe? I will never listen to that anti-woke crowd when it comes to any sort of media at this point. They are biased beyond belief and feed on their audience's infinite outrage to make money.

I am beyond my 40s and not close to elderly. Nor are the post-40s I hang out with. This guy really does not like Chloe Zhao. I was not a fan of The Eternals but Zhao does not deserve the hate.
