Help me out here, folks.
At the end of season five, Buffy dies and the last thing we see is her grave marker.
When season six starts, Giles says something like, "We need to have the world and the underworld think Buffy is alive"

Okay, why have a tombstone if you want people to think she's alive? Living people don't get tombstones, do they?

that is a really good point.... and then they had the buffy bot and everything... but why bother when there is a tomb stone.... totally agree with you.... someone please help me and CC out!

Ive had the conversation with people before and have come to the conclusion that the tombstone is hidden. Somewhere no one is likely to stumble across it.

I guess they decided she deserved a proper burial and a reminder of her life. So the got her a tombstone.

This question bothered me from the very first time I saw "Bargaining Pt. 1". I quickly decided it wasn't worth thinking about too much, there just isn't an answer.

One could invent an answer, I suppose. Like they buried Buffy with a tombstone and all, then Willow and Tara cast a cloaking spell over the grave to keep other people from seeing it.

I think that one reason is that as season five was being shot, Joss wasn't sure if that would be the last season or not. So they added a tombstone for the dramatic effect and didn't really think about what would happen to it once Buffy came back.

There was a discussion here on the boards regarding this a while back ago (I'm to lazy to find it) and I think that people agreed on the fact that Buffy isn only known as Buffy the Vampire Slayer to her friends and family. In the vamp community, she's just known as "The Slayer" or "A Slayer" since we also have Faith and a thousand slayers before and after.
So having a tombstone hidding somewhere in the woods with the name Buffy Summers, wouldn't give the fact that Buffy is dead away.

good point!
i think that doppelganger is right.but there's also another reason for the scoobies to make people think that buffy's still alive...dawn.
if people knew that buffy was dead dawn would have to leave sunnydale and live with her father or someone like adoptive parents...

I don't think it's all that bothersome a question-I don't think the grave was in the graveyard proper although just putting the marker deep in the woods wouldn't be a guarantee that it wouldn't be found by humans or mystical creatures. But it's not hard to imagine the marker being hidden, by human cleverness or mystical forces, nor to imagine the Scoobies realizing that it had to be hidden after they buried Buffy.

For that matter, why not ask other questions about "Bargaining Pt. I"? Like where were the police during the Hellion raid? Hiding? What was Glory's crumbling tower still doing standing in its original place after those several months? Wouldn't city ordinances have mandated knocking it down? It's best not to obsess over the details.

Also even if a Vampire does walk past the tombstone whats the chances they are going to stop and read it?

I think it was a screw up within the show, the writers may have not noticed it...or maybe they thought it was neccesary. Or maybe the people of sunnydale are deeply stupid...

Or maybe the people in Sunnydale are extremely normal and don't go around searching for peoples gravestones.... If someone dies in your home town do you go to the cemetary to see if they are really dead!

yea i always wondered about this.when i saw the gravestone then in season 6 they had the Buffy bot walking around i was just curious why they would have the gravestone.but i guess its the reasons other people have said,at that point Joss didnt know whether there was going to be another season or not, plus it made the end of season 5 a lot more dramatic as the last shot you see is Buffys grave,it just makes it a good ending to it

and if demmons see buffy why would they look for a grave???? even if they did find one then whos gonna think oh the slayers a robot???? oh yeah......
demmons and vamps prob just busy hunnting and running from scoobies and buffy bot to notice lol

Like some of you have said I think they wanted to respect her memory and give her a proper burial. Maybe the stone was hidden or maybe the gang thought that not many people knew Buffy's actual name.

that's odd, you got a point there only i'm not exactly sure how to answer it people thought that the Buffybot was the real Buffy and still she Had a tomb kinda wierd to me

Just one thing, how many of the big bads actually new Buffy's name. I mean sure there are people like Dracula etc. but how many demons said "Buffy Summers," I thought most of them usually just called her the slayer. I think that the scoobies had a gravestone made as something of respect to her.

I think that it was either a writing screw up, or as doppelgänger said, Joss wasn't sure if that would be the last season or not, so they added a tombstone for the dramatic effect

I think as eunsoma said, the scoobies would have wanted it to remember Buffy by. The same way other people have tombstones for their loved ones.

So it was more for them than for appearances.
